For the purposes of this poll, let's assume that you don't have any previous experience with operating a MT vehicle in real life.

When I first bought my DFGT (about 2 years ago), it took me roughly ~10-15 hours of playing time to get fully comfortable with the wheel and my lap times began to equal (or lower) my DS3.

Now I'm planning to switch from AT to MT as well for GT5 (using the DFGT paddle shifters), and I'm wondering for those people that have done the same, how long did it take you to get used to the change? Was it harder/easier than switching from a DS3 to a wheel?

Not hard at all, I switched from automatic to manual on a DS3 a few years back in other sim racing games. It really quickens your lap times

A wheel can take a long time to get used to. MT takes a couple days before 90% of the mistakes disappear. You just have to get to the point where you stop thinking about which button/direction to push and when and start thinking about what gear you need.

Re-reading your post, it's probably closer to equal if you learned the wheel that fast. I've usually found it takes a few hours before you can use a wheel ok as long as you don't mess up, but a LOT longer before you can handle mistakes well or stop making them. Once you stop downshifting too early, MT mistakes become FAR less costly than wheel/driving mistakes.

Just focus on keeping the RPM in the power band, be very very patient going into second, and never use first. That and note which gear you are in before braking so you can keep track until you get a feel for your RPM at different speeds.

Well I got a DFGT a couple of months before Christmas, and was using manual transmission on the ds3. I have never driven a manual car before and made the switch from ds3 to DFGT and manual transition at the same time. At first I missed a lot of shifts and over revved most times. After a while I got used to reaching for the shifter and paddles (well sort of paddles). Then it’s like riding a bike you never forget.

Thanks for the advice - the 10-15 hours I mentioned was basically the bare minimum time taken before I started to enjoy using the wheel. Obviously the more you practice, the better you get. I know that a wheel and MT is ideal in order to achieve the best lap times, but to be honest, I'm making the switch for increased immersion more than anything i.e. more enjoyable/fun experience.

Manul shifting was pretty much automatic for me (especially while using the wheel), so it didn't really take any getting used to. The wheel however, that took many hours to get used to.

Just try to get to a point where you know exactly what the engine sounds like when it's time to shift up and down. And use the throttle when down shifting

This might depend more on what cars you're driving - I've been using manual gears on GT games since GT2, but I still occasionally use auto for cars like the FGT and X2010/11 and any time I'm 'dragging' on SSX

Been using a pad since GT first come out, always auto as could never get used to manual on a pad.

For crimbo i was very lucky and got a G25:), my first ever wheel. The first few hours of driving i could'nt complete a lap of the ring without crashing at least 3-4 times offline and on, due to trying to drive the same as when on a pad.
Finally dawned on me i had to be alot more smoother in my driving style, which was a little hard as i am normally just loose and lucky.

Getting to used to gears is taking a little longer as i dont drive in non GT life, but am slowly getting there. Along with still remembering to be more precise with steering.
Was a bit frustrating to start with but now i cant believe i went without a wheel for so long, it's just so much more fun.

To the point i get up an hour earlier than normal during the week, so i can get a few laps in before work.

I chose automatic > manual, as I had trouble with the downshifts on DS3.

I pretty much did both at the same time, using manual (paddles) when I got my G27. I adapted to the wheel in a day or maybe two, and I choose shift points much better now.

well...i would say DS3 to Steering wheel because going from AUTO to MANUAL is baby food. Driving manual is the only way to have complete control over the car. Also you have to take into consideration if your using abs/asm/trac control. The best thing you could possibly do for your gt5 career would be take every assist off and put comfort hard on a car with around 600hp. It teaches you throttle moderation (if you don't want to spin out), track lines, and brake moderation. Once learned, drifting becomes easier and you may even see your times become more consistent and faster. Another thing is if your using a six speed with a clutch (like a g27) or a sequential shift (like a g25). I guess going form auto to manual was easy for me because i have only owned manual cars but in my honest opinion, it is something that needs to be learned for many applications.
