I'm already looking at receiving a holiday gift of a racing wheel but I am not certain which ones are the most affordable. Is there any wheel that is less than $200 that is well worth the upgrade from the DS3?

The G27 is still well above $250 correct? Is there anything lower than that that is respectable?

I think you're best off saving an extra $100 and getting the Fanatec CSR +Pedals bundle for $300 +shipping...but if you can't, I'd get the Driving Force GT. If it's anything like the Logitech Driving Force Pro (which it is), it's worth the $100-150 price tag. I've had my Driving Force Pro since December 2003 and it's still chugging along fine...then again, you may want to opt for a Logitech G27...but at that price range, you might as well get the CSR bundle. Haha...I'm no help.

I thank you for the help though. I'm just looking for something of a step in the right direction. I haven't used a wheel for any game since the PS1 and I would like to think that maybe I can actually drive a manual using the wheel (instead of the fun paddle shifting I do with the DS3).

Look into the Driving Force GT, then. I used one in a GT5 cockpit at ring'werk in Nurburg. The wheel on the GT is bigger than the Pro, but the base and pedals are the same. I'm not sure where you're located, but you should be able to find a DFGT. However, you will need a table and chair to use it correctly. Lap mounts don't really work well.

I am in NYC. Yeah I probably will need to invest in a table. I can get a folding chair or risk using a rolling chair (will regret that if suddenly the pedals end up too far away ).

Yeah, B&H isn't too far from me. I have connections at their rival Adorama so I will see what I can do there.

The Logitech Driving Force GT is a step below the G27 but is still a good wheel for $150 (I think thats how much it costs...)

The DFGT without a doubt, I love mine. I'll be upgrading to a G27 soon(Christmas), but I've had my DFGT for just under a year now and it's a great wheel. The pedals are alright, but all and all, it's great and well worth the money.

Does the DFGT have a clutch or is it automatic like the DS3?

No clutch, but it has paddles and a sequential stick shift.

I see. Sort of feels like what the DS3 has now then.

Allthough it may be a possibility to get new peddles and use them with a DFGT wheel, if that is cost efficient.

You can find the DFGT for $100-$120. You will like it at first. It will vastly enhance your gameplay with GT5. A few months down the road it may leave you wanting a little bit more. At that point you'd be lucky to Craigslist it for $50.
If your target price is in the $200 range, I highly recommend you look hard at the G27. I recently upgraded mine and wish I bought the G27 to begin with. If you think you'll end up with a better wheel in the future, why not just spend the extra $50 now and be done with it. It's kind of like buying a TV. That 32" will work, but the 42" will put a smile on your face. Just my 2 cents.

The DFGT is a huge upgrade over the DS3 and well worth the price. If you don't like the paddles then look at granturgismo DPS paddles, adds a little realism. But the biggest problem with the DFGT is that as you use it and learn more about the other wheels it will make you want to upgrade higher. Good luck.

Actually. I love the paddle shifting that the DS3 allows me to do. I just thought I would be frowned upon because most manual transmissions that I can recall used a manual clutch.

I've driven the Nurburgring in real life in a track-prepped VW Scirocco that was DSG (dual clutch system with paddle shifters). I still consider myself a man.

No one would frown upon you for using paddles to shift, but if they do they are an idiot. Anyways, I would guess that the majority of MT users in GT5 use paddles.

Driving force GT for budget racing. CSR + Pedals if you can afford that and especially if you want to play simulators. Avoid G25/G27 as they have been replaced around that price point by higher quality, more versatile products. Even if you have to buy a Driving Force GT and later add Fanatec pedals (as my mate is doing this week) it's still a better combo and value than the G25/G27. I've used all of these products personally and I currently use a CSR + CSR Elite pedals. None of these products are perfect. All have pros and cons, and the G25/G27 is a better option for some people/situations. Do your research.

What complete package out there is at the same pricepoint and better than a G27?

If you're planning on playing GT5, getting the DFGT and seperate pedals is not an option, that's only viable if you play exclusively on PC. Besides, the G27 wheel itself it far superior to the DFGT and the standard Fanatec shifter/pedals are not much better better than the G27 set, even the new ones

Higher up the market sure, there is plenty better out there, but the G27 is the best at it's pricepoint.

Right now its between the DFGT and the G27 and that's all.

If you can afford the G27 than there shouldn't be any question, that's the wheel you want. It's a great wheel and gives you more bang for your buck than the DFGT. Go for it.

Not sure if I can afford the G27 but I don't mind taking the DFGT as a consolation prize.

I will have a used G27 available for sale shortly as I have just ordered a Fanatec CSRE wheel and peddle set.
