Who drives an "every day commuter car"?

Are you referring to the Impala?

Quite right, the one with the nicer interior and exterior over its predecessor. This one was white with the chrome, had the police package black steel wheels with the chrome center caps. Generally speaking, it wasn't really anything special, but it looked pretty nice.

...I think The Bourne Ultimatum had something to do with this...

Ya know, funny thing, a P71 Crown Vic just showed up across the street. In black and white. The kid just bought it, nearly new, off the city.

I recently had the misfortune to drive a Mk2 Ford Focus 1.6.

It was like being dragged to your destination by a recently awoken, elderly dachsund with tuberculosis.

Really, mind someone on here said not to buy the 1.6 MKII when I was enquiring about them, it's not geared for 30mph roads too well or something. Mines the MKI and that drives fine, apparently the best engine in the MKII range is the 1.8 diesel.

Do they offer the 2.3L Mazda engine in the MKII Focus? Personally speaking, it was the only reason why I was ever interested in the car in the first place...

No, we get a completely different engine range to you guys I think. The biggest engine we get is a 2.5 V5 model, the next down is a 2.0 though the RS which is the fastest model (track wise at least the 2.5 might have a higher top speed) is a 2.0 then you've got the different 1.8, 1.6 and 1.4 engines.

My commuter car is an '01 Toyota Corolla. 1800cc. Torquey though.

It's a great commuter car. It does what it says in the tin. Nice to drive, easy to park, cheap on gas. Meh.

Does anybody here have a Lexus ES? That, to me, defines “commuter car”, because it’s always what business people who need to travel long distances and who don’t care at all about driving buy. In fact, because of that, I’d be very surprised if anybody at GTP actually owned one.

Uh, this is an enthusiast forum, right?

I'm not sure any of us want an over-glorified Camry. Much less a regular Camry in the first place...

ES or LS? Remember, the ES is the cheaper one. That car is aimed more at retirees. The LS is more aimed at the businessperson who spends a lot of time in the car.

'07 Suzuki Swift.

My previous car was only a base model '00 Toyota Corolla, but with worked suspension and exhaust. It turned in to a 70 kmh racing stripe down the side of a bus.

A much as I'd love to own an "enthusiasts" car, I don't see it happening until I win the lottery.

Well, that was kind of my point. ;) I can see why people at GTP would go for an Accord, a Corolla, even a Camry, but I asked if anybody had an ES because I can’t possibly imagine anybody here having one. It’s exactly my vision of the anti-enthusiast-car – even more so than the LS, because at least the LS has some neat gee-whiz (not to be confused with G-Wiz) technology.

Hm, that makes perfect sense, but it just seems that around here (Valencia, not SD) all the business people (including my boss, who is the founder of one company and the VP of another) have ES’s. I’ve no idea why – maybe it’s just because they spend so much money on their houses that they don’t want to plunk down the money for an LS.

Seems like most commuter cars around here are of the Chevrolet Malibu and Ford Fusion crowd, that is, of newer cars at least. There are still a gazillion Ford Taurus' and Chevrolet Impalas around here as well.

...Almost seems like a prerequisite to have an Impala if you've got a desk-job in this town...

Then again, the Silverado and F-150, one could argue, are just as much of a commuter car as well in some parts of this country.

Ah, yes, good examples of the market differences between a place like SoCal and a place like Michigan. ;) Every sedan you just listed is practically nonexistent here – if it’s a mid-size sedan, it pretty much has to be Japanese or European.

I'll post a more thorough review later. It's packed with gizmos and toys (when you've just been drenched by a waterfall, the heated seats are a very good thing indeed), but pressing the bang pedal just elicits the automotive equivalent of the rolleyes smiley from the engine.

My dad drives a 2006 Vauxhall Astra 1.8 Auto estate. My girlfriends brother now drives a 1995 Ford Fiesta Elite 1.3 and my girlfriends mum a 1.3 Citroen C3.

Reminder for all Americans:

Your local Suzuki dealer now carries the SX4 Sport, essentially a restyled Swift Sport with a sedan-style body...

How do you find it? I think they look like great little cars.

It drives okay, but it's a little light over the rear so bumpy corners make it squirm. The gearbox is a little unforgiving - lightning fast changes have given way to slow but steady movements. Other than that, for what you pay you get a pretty good car.

I drive a 95' civic...1.5L with a manual tranny. Fun (read slow) little car that gets me 40+ mpg. Cant complain, got it for under 3 grand and have driven it with no problems for over a year now. Quite a step down from my previous 04' Acura TL 6MT...I miss that car. BUT growing up and having kids forces some sacrifices.

But you've waxed poetic over the Astra, which would get blown into the weeds by any ES made since the late-1990s. However, the ES is a boring car that more gets the job done; nobody asked me if the car could handle better in the turns, nobody whined that there wasn't enough power in it, nobody told me the car was cramped or uncomfortable or poorly-built. People generally hated the transmission and engine computer combination, since they seemed to stare at each other from both sides of the same (fire)wall, neither wanting to work in harmony with the other, which would manifest itself in a oft-heard complaint of: "My car hesitates on acceleration."

Car and Driver got mid-6s to 60 with a recent ES 350; decent enough compared to the lot of us and our real-world machinery. Numb-to-missing steering is my biggest complaint, slightly wallowy handling on a 3800-pound front-drive platform, and you can kind of imagine the rest.

I drive the closest thing to an ES, an old GS: Soft, mellow steering at all speeds above 45 mph, soft suspension, 60-series tires, 4-speed slushbox, room for four, blah blah blah. The original owner didn't make it a daily driver, but I sure do. It's hard to call it a "commuter car". More like a 15-year-old version of Chrysler 300, with anti-Chrysler 300 styling. One man's commuter car is next guy's luxury car.

I have a 1994 Mercedes-Benz E320 Estate. (why can't I just call it a 320TE?)

It accelerates about as quickly as the USS Missouri, but it's still a rewarding drive. It's very responsive, and the unbelievably tight turning radius is second only to a Volvo 240. Fuel mileage isn't bad, neanderthal mentioned that his 300E gets 20s highway, and mine gets the same, (23)with a slightly bigger engine.
I've put 9,000 miles on it since I got it in August. It doesn't like mountains. It isn't geared for them. The slushbox seemed disapproving of the undulating roadways on I70 in Colorado. I had to gun the car to 35k to hope to at least go five under the posted limit uphill. Downhill was no trouble. It's a hefty bank vault on wheels. My 3780 pound car and gravity are friends.

i had to drive my aunt to phoenix from los angeles.

she was adamant that i shouldnt/ couldnt speed. in my culture we respect our elders, so i acquiesced to her wishes to try to keep it at about the speed limit.

my odometer doesnt work but i made it from LA (fontana actually) to anthem arizona with 1/4 still left in the tank. ~30mpg. avgd 75mph-ish for the journey.

the nice thing about driving a tank is that speed doesnt really register. she didnt notice when we were doing 90.

I drove from Lake Orion to Monroe today, about a 120mile round trip and when I got back to my girlfriends house the on board computer said I had registered 42 mpg and an average speed of 80 mph. I'm convinced the Mini is a commuter car even with it's slight "coolness" factor...who said commuters had to be boring?

I (well technically it is my wife's) have a Holden Barina SRi. It is a good mix between commuting excellence (especially the parking) and peppy fun. I just wish the dealers were better when it came to customer service.

 Classic post.

i drive a 2000 toyota Rav4.

Utterly boring for such a car enthusaist like me, Espeically one who is repsected in the Sim Racing community...

One day i will have a nicer car lol.

30!

I'm lucky to get 25. Who cares how many miles it has? It's not like the car is going to die.. Nice post.

in my defense, i was really really really feathering the throttle the whole way there. i was barely doing the 75 that i mentioned but it was more momentum and very judicious fuel management. i was literally crawling up the hills and mountains, getting passed by big rigs. no lie.

i was doing 40 at one point. i was real close to the peak (of whatever that mountain is at that point) and i just said screw it. i knew it was pretty much all downhill from there. thats when the 90 happened. like i said, judicious fuel management. (momentum!!!!) ;)

Our work runner is an '07 Civic. She clocks in at around 32mpg in town. Whoever doesn't have the kids drives the Civic.
