Hello, i'd just like to say a few lines of something i learned about.I am not religious or anything. You can be religious or keep your faith if that is what you want to do.I like religious people full stop. Here is the morals/belief that i learned. Also what morals have you learned ?.There are good and bad people who believe in religion too, just like those who don't believe in it.

Have serenity

Accept the things that you cannot change

Have the courage to change the things you can

and have the wisdom to know the difference.

I didn't say you did, I just prefer that version.

And my name isn't Dan, Mr &Slide.

If it's on this list, it's bad:

Lust
Gluttony
Greed
Sloth
Wrath
Envy
Pride

If it's on this list, it's good:

Chastity
Temperance
Charity
Diligence
Patience
Kindness
Humility

If it's on this list, it's bad:

Sloth

I try to keep my set of morals strong within me. Do I slip? Even on a day-to-day basis? Sure. I try not to be proud, but I am. I try really hard not to be gluttonous, yet I eat a massive amount of food due to my workout routines. I try not to envy, but sometimes I can't help it. However, at the end of the day if most people who have interacted with me have left with a smile, or even indifference, and I can be satisfied with what I have said and how I have acted throughout the day, then I know that day, on average, I upheld my morals. Nobody is perfect, but those who act without thinking of the consequences, indulge constantly, live selfishly, look down on everyone, are consumed by material want, and hate the world around them are the people who remind the rest of us why we should never forget our morals and why we have them, regardless of whether or not they're derived from religion.

The 3 laws of Humanity:

1. One must protect his own existence.

2. One must respect a fellow man and cause no harm to him, or, through inaction allow him to come to harm unless doing so conflicts with the first law.

3. One must follow the laws and orders of society unless those laws and orders conflict with the first and/or second laws.

My Moral Compass just spins around wildly.

I have it at times, then lose it just as fast as I get it.

I think pretty much everyone has most of the good morals, no serial killers or rapists among the regular members that I know of . Maybe the question should be who has gotten rid of the established and socially acceptable immoralities?

Someone hasn't looked at the Pics of yourself thread recently... :mischievous:
To be honest I just checked it earlier today. But come on, if someone wears a plaid shirt and has a weird haircut, that doesn't mean they're a serial killer. :P

This belongs in the opinion section. I've got to ask though - what does your morality say about the trolley car question?

You're standing by a lever that switches a track from one fork to the next. You did not set the lever to its current position. On one fork of the track, where the lever is set currently, there are 5 men working. The walls are steep on both sides, there is nowhere for the men to go. On the other fork, there is 1 man working, also steep walls, nowhere for him to go. A trolley is coming down the track.

If you do nothing, the trolley will go down the fork to the 5 men and kill them. 5 men will die for certain. If you move the lever, 1 man will die for certain.

Where is your morality now? There is only one correct moral answer to this question, and it's not supplied by a dusty religious book.

Is that a thinly disguised reference to the direction of the thread? ;)

The real answer is that you make your decision; resisting blame on either result due to a faulty lever, nor suing for a figure with many zeroes on the end, and living your life with post-traumatic stress disorder for the rest of thy days.

Morality changes with the environment; when in Rome do as the Romans do.

In other words - if you find yourself in the proverbial Hell, enjoy the hot dogs and worship the Devil. Or else you'll end up in hell.

Probably more for the Opinions section but here goes: Does anyone believe that morals are innate in people, maybe a little bit, or not at all - morals being completely environmental?

I'm interested to find out.

Problem is it doesn't really apply here. The "When in Rome" phrase is supposed to mean that you need to adjust to the prevailing culture of the area, NOT that you should suddenly compromise your morals to do so. It means have some wine and grapes. Otherwise it might be more explicit and say "When in Nazi Germany, shoot a Jew".

You'll find it.

Neither.

Morals exist independent of people... and we now officially belong in the other forum.
