I think Michiganders are just easily pleased. Thinking of Woodward and the Grand Rapids Metro Cruise, it often seems as though "common but special" models are often more popular than the stereotypical favorites. It often seems more like a "Hey, I haven't seen one of those in forever" type of excitement compared to "Wow, that's a pretty nice car."

I've been looking for an old Scirocco for a while now, I haven't seen one since I had first bought my Jetta back in 2005. No, its not a Ferrari 360, but I'm sure I'll be just as giddy when I see one.

Some of us just don't subscribe to the "Unobtainium" theory that the grass is always greener and anything you can't have is wonderful. Frankly unless I heated my house by burning spare cash, I just couldn't generate much interest in cars costing more than about $50k at the outside. And only the $50k cars because I know they might be near what I'm willing to pay after they are turned in from their 36-month leases.

Honestly, if an Enzo drove through my town, I'd watch it go by and say, "Hm, that's cool, I wonder where that came from?" But if I saw a local ad for a decent, rust-free, 20-year-old 325is for $1500, I'd get rather excited.

That makes two of us. I get excited much more over an E39 M5 or NSX than some Ferrari.

Though good luck finding an E30 for a reasonable price now; they're values have risen quite a bit

I'd have to agree that even if I was filthy rich I can't imagine splurging on things like exotic cars and whatnot. A test drive would be fun and I love seeing them, but I'm much more interested other parts of the automotive landscape. There are plenty of other cars that have a similarly glorious history (see avatar) that fit my personality much better.

Ditto. A mint condition first generation Celica would get far more of my attention that an exotic.

You don't though, I guess.. But because of the internet and games, Ferraris are suddenly "boring", quick Lancer Evos are "just an Evo with a turbo bolted on to it" (said on here) and you read **** like "meh, just a GT3, not even an RS".

I don't care about supercars because they are too much money. I never talk about them. I don't really think about them. I drool over old, modified (low) run-of-the-mill cars, built by their owners. That doesn't mean I talk **** on supercars..

We don't begrudge him his hobby at all. We don't even begrudge him his moment of glory. We're just slightly baffled by it, and some of us begrudge the tone of the writing in the article, for good reason.

I don't think I've ever come across a supercar owner that isn't thrilled to have their car photographed. I mean they bought the car to be flashy and standoutish so of course they are going to love it when you snap a picture. Most actually talk to me at lights or at least give me a taste of what the engine sounds like. I think my next big round of spots are going to be on FChat too, Doug told me to join up and start posting.

Nah, us cool kids here in Michigan drive around in our cars looking for trouble. That, and we don't exactly have Atlanta or Denver-quality areas for spotting cars. There is one neighborhood like that on the west side, but your likelyhood of seeing anything on most days is pretty slim. You've gotta know exactly where and when to go to a particular spot, and you might get lucky.

Thoughts spring to mind of my trips to Miami. Most afternoons, you can nab quite a few nice shots in a five block area in South Beach. Wait for the sun to go down, then it gets really good. The "Carrera GT X3" picture came on the edge of that.

I think you need to venture to this side of the state Beverly Hills, Bloomfield Hills, Birmingham, and the whole middle section of Woodward Ave. if full of money and nice cars. It's were I see most of my exotics. Remember Oakland County was one of the richest counties into the US until the auto industry exploded.

Its not like we don't have much, problem is that all of the rich people live in the woods. I could go follow DeVos around, but chances are that he'll hop "in da choppa" and just fly out of my old neighborhood. Right now, we've got two allusive Ford GTs ripping around in Ada that I've yet to get a photo of, apparently a new LP640 as well that a friend of mine got the other day.

What's the point of that, looking for expensive cars?
Me and my buddies cruise around, we go up and down strips (main street in the towns) and greet other people with other modified cars. Way more fun than driving around where I live (enough expensive cars here) taking pics of them..

Nice pictures, I recognize a lot of those roads and buildings.

As for the MC12, it was here briefly but it's gone now, it was incredible to see it in person.

I saw an MC12 on the street here, but was too slow/dopey to get my camera out. Talk about kicking yourself!

No offense to Doug or other spotters, but that is some nice work there. Glad to see someone else who takes the time to try & get some "artsy" photos out of a spot instead of just point & click. 👍

I wholeheartedly agree with whoever said that Doug is using his time in one of the best ways I could possibly think of. Altough I dont give a damn about supercars and wouldnt drive around recklessly to find them, a few years ago, when I had the time I did walk around recklessly for about 7 hours trying to find abandoned old cars and throwing away the ones that were too common, even here in Mexico city. All of you who visit the DYSAGT thread know how my car spots are. Heck, I even MADE a website for them.

So to an extent, I'm exactly like Doug. Heck, I still give me some time with my full-on day schedulle of work, photography, photoshop, writing articles, two dogs and a wife, car drawing, a mom with a broken leg, hot wheels and eating, to go into really dangerous places to get pictures of a 4 door 56 Pontiac that's been sitting there for ten years. So yeah, I know how that is and I should really say that I'm almost as nerdy as Doug, only focused in rust.

In any which way, nice stuff for Doug, strange recognition and so-so article, it's not like you need a lot of knowledge to recognize what Doug gets, but he is still incredibly dedicated to the hobby. Props.

Only drawback: he likes Ferraris.

It's not always possible to get a nicely composed shot though. A lot of the time it's about point and shoot in order to get any sort of photo.

I know, which is why I said no offense. I know you can't always get perfect shots, but there are times where some can attempt it.
