I play. I rate myself around a 5. I've been playing probably 3 years now but because I mainly listen/play punk there isn't a lot of solo work so lately I've been getting into other stuff. I don't play as seriously anymore, just to stop the boredom usually.

Dude, it's only about a 25 minute job, unless you're talking about an electric with one of those "fancy" floating bridges.

If you have the strings and the tools, (string winder, and pair of wire cutters. Pin puller if you're acoustic) you can do it the next time you take a dump.
Just leave the book or magazine out of the bathroom.
(Don't even tell me y'all don't read/hide from the kids in the bathroom. )

I know. I can do it and stuff, but the problem is I don't have the actual strings.

Plus, when I'm on the pot is when I read Harry Potter. it's only appropriate.

Nothin' backwards about my strings. They were strung by the just hand of god!

...and he was a lefty too, or something.

Oh yeah...of course i'm going to change the strings. I just can't do that for a while, so no guitar for a few weeks.

Ah thats okay, you sounded really worried like the problem was much more drastic than just string damage... yeah just put a new low E on, the other strings look okay still.. :)- not too worn or dirty...

Hey, I'm a lefty too, but learnt to play right-handed from the start cause there wasn't many lefty-guitars just lying around... Now I can't imagine playing lefty like I SHOULD be more comfortable with... its quite strange. Maybe one day I'll try to learn lefty just for the fun of it, so I can flip the guitar over and keep playing - that would be cool!

Hey Gil, have you checked out many Taylor acoustics? They have a really amazing new pickup system thats really awesome, not yuck and shrill like most piezo pickups... it just sounds like the guitar's nice acoustic tone, if you care about amping up acoustics that is...
My favorite sounding acoustic (today:sly:) has to be a little guitar builder in Aus called Melville Guitars. These sound so amazingly warm and rich you doubt its actually a normal guitar with little wire strings making the sound, it just sounds hugely thick and clear! Very expensive however... :(

Yeah, you're spot on, new Martins really are far too pricey for the tone you get, they're just going on the name.... Many people would just get tricked into thinking they sound better than other (cheaper) guitars because of the name... not to say Gibbos are cheap!

Unfortunately it costs way more to get a really nice acoustic than a really good electric, there's just way more careful (non-machined) making required... the best are all handmade individually still, a lot of the little specialist luthiers make stuff that'll really amaze you compared to the big name brands... its just tracking down the really special ones is very hard!

I think my frets are getting worn. Around the 18th fret or so on all strings but the high E, the note just pretty much dies out when it's bent much more than half a step. What should I do about this? I've had the guitar for about a year and a half.

I've played Taylors by the boat load. My favorite is the Big-Baby. The others seem to be (to my ears) set up for a pick up of some/any kind. The low end is still pretty "tenor" to me on most of the Taylors I've played. And that works well plugged in.
Plus, if I'm gonna drop $1500 on an axe, I want a Custon Carvin or a Gibson.:D Or maybe two Seagulls.

Seriously though, I think that Seagulls are gonna be the "next big thing" in acoustic guitar. If you get a chance to play one, you'll find them to have a huge sound for tiny money. And a really quality build.

Another alternative that I've been kicking aroung is a nice cedar topped A/E Takamine. Most of my playing currently has been plugged in, and Takamines sound about the best for the types of music I play.

You need a grind and polish, not a refret. A refret is major surgery for a guitar. You can do it yourself, with the correct tools.

Look at "leveling" tools first, then abrasives. http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Fretting_supplies.html

Hey Ryan,

The slacker option might be as easy as a truss rod tweak and a little higher action (on the treble side of the bridge) to get you a bit more playing time outta the guitar before a fret shave... yes its a band-aid solution but might work for a while if the problem isn't too extreme yet.

Of course it would be much better to just do a fret shave straight away, just depends how urgently the guitar needs it.

James

P.S. Hey Gil I'll make sure to have a play of a Seagull if I see one in a shop here in Aus, I've seen some VERY favourable reviews in mags like UK Guitar Buyer... :)

I don't know if they are a "subsidiary" but they are indeed a part of the "Canadian Consortium" of low price, high quality guitars.

What the review aren't telling you is that the Seagull play as nicely as just about any guitar costing three times as much. And I've seen them on sale here for as little as $400 USD.
For performance, I'm not as fond of the satin finished guitars, but they still sound very nice.

Another, albeit pricier, option is just about any guitar by Tacoma. I've played them by the bucket also, and haven't found a bad one yet.👍

Thanks for the info, Solid and James. I'll take the guitar down to where I bought it and see what the guy can do for it. I might just get fret leveling, because it's visibly obvious that I've played some parts more than others (IE the higher strings are shiny and flatter while near the lower strings they are pretty much in the same condition as they were when i bought it). I know the guy well so he'll probably do it for free or not much.

I doubt very much he'll do it for free. A regular fret leveling and dressing costs around $60 to $90, on average. The entire fingerboard needs to be taped down, and then the fret wire cut out. That way, the fret wire shavings don't scratch up the fingerboard. Constant attention and care is needed and frequent measurements are taken. A grind and polish, as I call it, is a lot more difficult then it sounds, but it's easy to do, so long you pay good attention to your work.

You might want him to angle the grind on the higher frets so you can get better sounds with string bends. But, doing so will wear out the frets more at the higher frets. I've done it before, but I didn't think it was cost effective to do so because the benefits didn't outweigh the cost of a sooner refret. Plus, it can be a little more tricky to perform than keeping the frets completely flat. Ask him for his advice. If he has never done it before, you might not want him experimenting on your guitar.

BTW, if he does do it for free, be sure to let me know. I've got two guitars that could use a good grind and polish. ;)

Hahaha, I didn't know that much work was needed, so most likely he won't. Oh well, I'll just have to see what I can do.

I'm sad no one has posted a tab in my new guitar tab thread, after the initial enthusiasm for it :(. Please don't be scared off, thinking you need to post a really big tab like I did. Maybe I should've started it off with "Thunderstruck" or something !

Looking for ANY tab to appear to help kick things off... I hereby remove all restrictions on quality! ;)

Oh, hope you enjoy the guitar zoxxy! I assume you just got that starter pack recently! :)

While the thread is indeed a cool idea...
If the record companies find out about it, they may send Jordan a "nastygram" and have it removed for copyright infringement.

Songwriters/Singers don't mind if you use their stuff, as long as you paid for it.
If not, they sic the RIAA on ya.

My favorite music site, has had a huge portion shut down due to threats of lawsuit by the RIAA. And while Dansm's site, which had a lot of Eagles' stuff on it, is the "bomb", it was even better before the RIAA "inspired" changes.

Most tab sites I go to have been up and running for years and years with massive archives of guitar tab. The trick seems to be to NOT post the lyrics up there with the guitar part/s. It seems to be okay to just post an interpretation of the guitar part of a song, or one riff etc...
If you were just posting stuff copied straight from an official tab book thats obviously infringement, but what we're doing is just posting up our interpretation of a tune.

Sites like OLGA.net put this before every song:
#This OLGA file is the author's own work and represents their interpretation of the song. You may only use this file for private study, scholarship, or research. #

If we do something like that too do you think it would be better?

That would probably make the "bulldogs" at RIAA happy.
I just don't want to see a great idea get squashed by "the man".

Thuderstruck is so fun to play. Maybe I'll do that one. Do you do it one handed?

Its easier one handed (only need half the coordination), but sounds MUCH ballsier picking every note, just like Angus does - I've got the Live at Donington DVD.

Really? Unless you pluck even the 0 notes, I find it easier when plucking it. Maybe I need to do hand exercizes or something, but I find hammering with my fingers stretched is kinda hard. Harder than just placing it on the fret with a pluck, anyway.

lol. I can record me doing both ways, if you are dying to listen. ;)

Oh you need to pluck the 0 notes on the upstrokes! Otherwise it doesn't sound right...

Edit: I'll record it both ways if you like, but I'd rather send stuff in email (and you can too if you like - just get my hotmail on my profile - this goes for anyone wanting to talk/record guitar stuff) if you wanna swap sound files. I can't be bothered uploading to GTPlanet... (how can I quickly and easily?!)

www.yousendit.com

use that. Thanks, too. doing the zeros on the upstroke is a doozy. haha. I'll practice some more, though. I can just hit the downstrokes and still leave some 0-note evidence at the hammer off.

Where doth Pako lie on the guitar scale?

I just started reading through this thread. I really have no idea where I would rate myself. I think people give me more credit than I give myself in regards to my playing. I think I have gained a huge amount of experience these last few years and continue to grow in my musical endevours. It's like everything else, the more I learn, the more I realize I don't know. Music's my soul medicine and wouldn't trade it for anything.

I've been eyeing a 7 string electric similar to the one in the attachment for a while now. The one I'm thinking about isn't that color, it's more of a dark gray with no "shiny finish" for lack of a better word. Unfortunately, I haven't had an extra $800 lying around. I'm not sure if the one I'm looking at is an Ibanez or a Jackson. Does anyone have any experience with 7 string guitars? If so, which is better, Ibanez or Jackson?

I also have a album that i only sold to my friends.

Here it is ( no mean to brag or anything )

Band Name: The Renagades

Album: No Name Crew

Songs:

1. No Name Crew
2. Stick the ****ing Hat on your Damn Head
3. Back in Blue
4. Land of the Not Free
5. I Predict a Riot
6. Time is Not On Your side
7. You vs. The Clock ( who will win )
8. Rampage
9. It Was Not An Honest Mistake
10. Lose Yourself

Yeah, I agree on it sounding ballsier when picked. I have that DVD also.
