Who will the next generations remember?

I'm curious as to who you think people will remember from the past generation as having a significant impact on the rest of the world. The people who future generations will remember a 100+ plus years from now. The person must be known worldwide, and have lived somewhere between 1950 and the present. Whether it's a form of art, or a form of science, just as long as it's a person that has had a profound impact on the world. This topic just makes me wonder how much further we can possibly advance. It seems as if we are advancing in such small steps now, as compared to the industrial revolution, that nobody is currently standing out. A factor of so much more going on around us may be to blame for people not getting recognition.

Examples of people that significantly impacted the world prior to this time period:
  • Thomas Edison
  • Sir Isaac Newton
  • Ludwig van Beethoven
  • Albert Einstein
  • Wright Brothers


And an example from my criteria:
  • Bill Gates

While he didn't invent the computer, he is probably the most renowned figure when someone mentions the word.
 
Al Gore. I reckon in 100 years time people will remember him as the guy who was wrong. :lol:

Richard Branson?
the beatles?
Michael Jackson?
 
I think a few musical greats will be known for a long time - Clapton, Sinatra, The Beatles, Micheal Jackson, Ray Charles, David Gilmour.

Similarly, landmarks and leaders for our countries and causes will not be forgotten - Neil Armstrong, the Kennedys, Martin Luther King, Ghandi (Though he died before 1950)...

To write out a list of people that I think will be remembered would take ages, but a few suggestions on my part will do for now.

Barack Obama?
The Rolling Stones

Well there could be a lot people that could be remembered, but it still depends whether who the future generations would look up to......
 
The Rolling Stones will probably still be playing in 100 years time, so 'remembered' is perhaps not the correct phrase in their case! :p

In the UK we usually remember Prime Ministers, musicians, actors & sports personalities. I think David Beckham, Fabio Capello (born 1946) may be remembered if he can take England to victory in 2010.
 
-Clinton (Did a lot of good things, especially compared to his successor)
-Princess Diana (Will still be talked about)
-The Governator (He's not the first celebrity politician, but it's the Terminator!)
-Hugh Hefner (What? I'm serious.)
-Hedi Slimane (This one's a bit more out-there. But I believe in his area of work, he will still be referenced 50 years from now).
 
I would definitely say:
Tiger Woods
Roger Federer
It will be a loooong time before anyone ever knocks down their records if it ever even happens.
I'd like to say:
Steve Irwin (because he was a legend before he even died and an important wildlife crusader)
Peter Brock (if you forget him I'll be very disappointed)
AC/DC (not likely but still pioneers for Australian rock)
The guy with a Japanese name (which for some domb reason I can't remember right now) who invented drifting (When someone mentions drifting, his name is mentioned)
Kevin Rudd (Current Aussie prime minister- maybe remembered as being the prime minister that apologised to the stolen generations- which is Aborigines for those that didn't know)

I'm really speculating here; history can forget people altogether, or dig up names from the past based on what I think may happen in the next 20-100 years. Just a few off the top of my head:

Michael Jordan
Wernher von Braun
Stephen Hawking
Nhat Hanh (Thich Nhất Hạnh)
Edwin Seaborg

"Collective memory" tends to be really forgetful about inventors, with the exception of Thomas Edison. I bet 99 people in 100 couldn't tell you the last name(s) of who invented (or gets credit for invention of) television, radio, automobiles, et cetera...
 
There's a lot of good people already mentioned so instead of making a carbon copy of someone else's list and adding one more person to it, I'll just throw out one name...

I can only think of Andy Warhol at the moment (thanks Loon). He'll be a staple in art history books for a very long time.

As would my candidate.
Marilyn Monroe (1926-1962, though active from 1947 to 1962).
Will easily be remembered as one of the world's most beautiful women.

I would also have to say in terms of women, Oprah Winfrey & Angelina Jolie for their humanitarian work.
 
Exactly, when I have fantasies with Angelina Jolie, her humanitarian work really shines.


For me, it would be:
