Whole computer locks up randomly, just freezes......

Hi guys,

After installing my new mainboard, fiddling with the sound drivers without solving much, I have another (new...ish) problem.....

My PC simply stops responding at times, doesn't matter what I do, sometimes it's 10 minutes and sometimes 10 hours after a reboot, it just freezes, the mouse, keyboard and everything just BOOM, and nothing happens :grumpy:

Sometimes it doesn't load up windows, it stops at the Win XP Loading screen (that with the loading bar), so after the...2nd or 3rd reboot it's working fine (until it decides to eventually freeze:guilty: )

I'm really pissed off because I had to change my mainboard (take it from me: I know that MSI is a good company, but I HATE this mainboard!) and among with the sound problem, I can't use my MX510 in USB-mode, have to use the PS/2 adapter......anyway......

I checked the temperatures, right after the lock-up they were:
CPU 'round 40 degrees C
System temp, around 28-30 C
And Graphic card temp: around 40

I really apreciate (SP?) any help, because it's driving me nuts :crazy:

EDIT: I'm using AVG Anti-virus, updated every time there is an update ;)
 
Could your motherboard have been damaged in transit? It sounds like you are having a lot of problems with it.
 
Is it a fresh windows installation?

You might try slowing down your hardware to see if that stabalizes it - not as a permanent fix, just as a test. I'm using a damaged motherboard in one of my machines but running at slower clock speeds to keep it from failing.
 
Test over, it passed without a problem.....I am generally pretty careful with hardware bits, but I really don't know.....

I installed windows a week ago on my new 250 GB HDD, but before having the BIOS problems with my old board, it worked like a charm !

Is there a way to re-install windows, but still using the same profile (I mean settings, desktop, e-mail and so on....) ?
 
Oh hang on. Have you not re-installed windows since you changed the motherboard?
 
I have always used a rule of thumb, new MOBO/Processor/HD = New Install of Windows.

Me too, though strictly speaking it probably shouldn't be necessary. I just never trust windows to figure out how to change that many drivers all at once.

My guess is that he reinstalls windows and the problem persists. It sounds like a hardware problem to me - but you never know, windows is pretty flaky.
 
Sorry to bring up the topic, but does anyone know some good pc tech or hardware forums where I can get some help?

PS: When installing Windows without formatting the HDD, could I keep my old account/settings and so on?

Only if you do a "repair" rather than a new install. A fresh install will wipe your settings.
