Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20041026 Firefox/1.0RC1

Change log:
  • Application Update! (see update in read more)
  • Find toolbar, which received quite a few bug fixes.
  • Gecko and website rendering -- we took a few significant layout/css fixes.
  • Migration from other browsers on first run (You can just rename your profile directory to trigger migration.)
  • Single window mode (load all pop-ups in new tabs), set in the Advanced panel of the browser Options/Preferences window.
  • Focus interaction between tabs, which was changed to fix several security vulnerabilities.

Download: Windows, Other OSes

Edit: If any of your extensions are broken when you upgrade, do the following:

1. Open C:/Documents and Settings/Username/Application Data/Mozilla/Firefox/Profiles/randomname/extensions/Extensions.rdf

2. Change all instances of maxVersion="0.10" to maxVersion="1.0"

Oh yes, what I've wanted since I got FireFox.

Thank you Shannon, will download tonight.

Downloading right now. Do plugins automatically transfer from the version I am currently using?

When I upgraded from 0.9 to 1.0 it automatically checked my extensions and upgraded those ones that needed upgrading and disabled ones that were incompatible with the new version.

Which was nice.

I recently had someone complain about Firefox because websites they've designed don't render properly with it. They claimed that it doesn't support stylesheets properly. I did a bit of searching and it was because discovered that IE supports non-W3C compliant CSS styles that some web designers use and don't bother testing in other browsers. You'd think that professional web designers should know better.

Still, here's to some decent competition to Internet Exploder.

You must not work with any of them ... the ones I've dealt with have nearly all been quite unprofessional.

I know alot of people switching to FF lately.

The single window mode is God. I love it. Thanks alot for that Shannon. And yes, everything from your old FireFox transfers to this one.

Now I know why Mozilla gives you precompiled binaries. I have been compiling Firefox for 30 min so far.

That's longer than it takes to compile my kernel and modules (~15-20 min) or a video player (~10 min).

OK, it just finished as I was typing this post.

I keep getting emails from people who ask me for advice on adware and popup problems and my initial advice is always:

DUMP INTERNET EXPLORER!

Unfortunately a lot of people can't. I was doing IT work during the summer and I worked for an organisation where the proxy servers were setup only to accept IE so we had no choice but to endorse it.

But users would always be bothering me about their home system problems so I had some simple advice:

1. Always have virus software running.
2. Keep your virus software updated.
3. Run regular full system scans with your virus software.
4. Run regular adware/spyware scans using both AdAware and Spybot Search And Destroy and always make sure both of them are updated to the latest definitions.
5. Always have a firewall running on your PC.
6. DON'T USE INTERNET EXPLORER! Use Mozilla Firefox instead.

I've had most satisfaction from solution 6. People who switch over to Firefox are always happier. The other solutions are usually somewhat successful, sometimes not. But I've never had someone say they switched to Firefox and had their internet security worsen. It always improves. Especially when it comes to everyday annoyances like popups and adware.

Yeah, pop-ups have dissapeared completely for me now, it's great. One problem though, I seem to be missing firefox.ico or whatever the icon for firefox is, when ever I open firefox it has a windows icon up the top and on the taskbar eg:
firefox5.jpg

Could someone send me this icon or something, it's quite annoying.

Look what I found :).

Firefox is awesome! Been using it for some time now, and im very happy with it! I do however get 1 or 2 popups sneaking past! But that is no biggie!

All in all, it is more fun surfing with firefox!

Use the Adblock extension to take care of those ;) It is very good.

Does anyone know why I do not get the WYSIWYG editor (for formatting GTP posts, for example) in Firefox 1.0RC1? They show up fine in 0.9.3, which is why I have moved back to that release.

Did you do a typical or custom install? I don't know, but it might be unticked and under Custom.

I edited "extensions.rdf" the way you said there (just it was in a different location) and I can't get any themes or extensions to work (apart from the default theme obviously). Any help anyone?

Well, I think that tip is meant for upgrading from 1.0PR to 1.0 RC1. Obviously, it'll be useless for any 0.9x extensions.

Mozilla Firefox 1.0 RC2 (Win32)

Firefox 1.0 RC 2 Released

The Mozilla Foundation today has released the second release candidate for Firefox 1.0 which can be found on their FTP server. The Firefox developers please ask that you look at the following areas: site authentication (especially over SSL), extension installation via update.mozilla.org and other sites, MacOS X builds, and software update - "we're making another attempt at this. We think we've got the bugs from RC1, so please test by following these instructions." Please report any problems you find in Bugzilla. Along with English builds, a number of localizations are also available for testing. More information on what looks to be the final RC before 1.0 can be found on Ben's weblog.

Yeah, thats what I'm going to do also. I passed up on the RC1 because of the bugs it probably has, and decided to just wait for the final version.
