why are they starting crowd funding development on Project Cars 2 already?

No way to know what they should do without some detailed info on what they are doing.

There are likely several things they could start doing toward a sequel that would not deter work on the current version.

I do think it would be best to give it a couple of months and get more user feedback before they decide which direction to go with the next edition though.

That won't even happen in the case they don't start the sequel, knowing they're also working on World of Speed.

I'm sure it's not about funding this time. See it more like a super extended special edition with daily updates, exclusive access to the devs and other perks like your name in the game. The new membership tiers will be capped at 100$ and no returns payed out.
