Why did PD take so long?

Why did it take them over 5 years to model 200 cars? I know they are extremely detailed, but does it really take that long to model? I have little experience in 3D modelling (Using SketchUp, tried Maya, 3Ds Max) and I just don't see why it took so long?
(I am not complaining or anything!!)
Sorry if this has been answered...

I think it takes something like 6 months to model each car (someone can give the official time scale); that's an awful lot of man hours to make 200 cars.

If we take off similar versions/trim (example: Cappuccino EA11R/EA21R, or Suzuki Swift Sport '05/'07, or the different paintjobs for each Nascar model) which wouldn't take additional 6 months (doubtful figure, but let's pretend it's correct) to add, there are about 160 Premium cars in GT5, excluding variations.

People say PD is a rather small team.

More than 50 3D modelers just for cars are listed in GT5 credits.

About 6 months ago (when the game was in 'final' stages of developement)
didn't Kaz say that there is about 160 people working on the project?

6 months for each car seems extremely slow... What are they, a bunch of slugs? I just can't see it...

GT4 car models supposedly went over PS2's capabilities too.
I think we all know how they look like in GT5...

I don't think that the same people that model the cars would design the game engine...

yes i know i was just posting that link because of a possible clue in there:

“You won’t have to wait as long as you did for GT5. GT5 was basically the creation of a whole new operating system, and developing GT6 will be like adding new applications that run on that new operating system.”

...that's what took so long...or definitely a major contributing factor alongside kaz being a perfectionist and his vision for gt5 was/is never-ending!

I have defended PD many times in the past and even I have to admit that the game that was shipped does not seem to represent 5 years worth of work. I guess Kaz really did get locked in the bathroom:sly:.

So GT5 is GT6:Prologue? :D

Anyways, so it took them about 3 years to create the game engine and 70 cars? (From GT4 to GT5:P) Still seems extremely long to me...

Being as though there are standard cars and lots of various inconsistencies throughout the game, many people on :gtplanet: have expressed that they do not feel as though GT5 is a full fledged game and that GT6 will be.

It seems to me as they spent more time promoting the game rather than working on it and making it pair up with the previous GT games.

if there are 50 programmer for the car and each car take 1/2 year they can do 100 premium cars/year. so if they want to "upgreat" all cars for gt6 they need ... 8 years ... hopefully not o.O

There's a LOT more to it than just creating a game engine and detailing 70 cars, etc...i would like to know more details of the dev process for GT5 though!👍

im sure there's a good reason why it took so long i mean when kaz released GT5 it still wasn't 100%...and still isn't 100% thank god for updates!

They did not just create an engine and 200 premium cars.. but well.. some will never understand...

And PD did not work on GT5 (the Game itself) for 100% over those 5 Years.
PSP Version? 3D Technology? Thats not done in a couple weeks.

Yamauchi: Gran Turismo 5 's Development Cost Hit $60 Million

Polyphony Digital's long-awaited PlayStation 3 racing sim Gran Turismo 5 has cost publisher Sony a total of $60 million over its five-year development cycle, according to an estimate by series producer Kazunori Yamauchi.

Speaking in an Autoweek interview conducted during the SEMA auto show in Las Vegas this week, the Gran Turismo creator seemed to downplay the expense, taking into account Gran Turismo 5's scope: "There are other games that cost more," he said. "Considering the size and scale of the game, I think it's probably a fairly small amount."

Large or small, car companies may not be significantly helping out with that sum. Yamauchi says the studio hasn't accepted deals aimed at getting specific models into the game, although Polyphony and manufacturers have developed some "relationships where we collaborate to raise the level of the game."

The producer struck a similarly unconcerned tone when asked about the game's lengthy development period, pointing out how much redevelopment had to be done for the PlayStation 3 iteration of the game.

"From our perspective, it doesn't seem like that long a time," he said. "To make Gran Turismo 5, we threw away the legacy code from GT4 and started from scratch. It's been five years from [the release of] GT4, and that's the same amount of time it took to develop the first GT4. To create a game from scratch, that's the amount of time it takes to get it right."

(Purely in terms of initial retail release dates in Japan, there was slightly less than four years between the release of Gran Turismo 3 and Gran Turismo 4.)

But the next game won't take as long, Kazunori acknowledged, as it can largely build on the team's existing work. "GT5 represents a whole new operating system," he noted, while "GT6 is just new apps that run on the GT5 system."

I'm so not looking forward to GT6.

I'm so not looking forward to GT6.

Really!? why's that? i mean i'm still working on GT5 but im sure GT6 will have a bunch of more cool stuff and will end up being better than GT5...i dunno i got faith in kaz, he and his team have done a good job so far considering all the other racing sim games...

The team is too small, and they have no idea how to make a truly decent game, I dont want a GT6 for PS3 (a PS3 isnt capable of running GT5 to a good standard so they should just update GT5 to GT5 spec II and spec III (gradually turning all cars that matter into premium cars and adding more races into the current events list) until PS4 is ready, then making GT6 (which will obviously require 5 years work to make the new OS)

GT5 is not a racing sim!!

It's a driving simulator, that happens to take place on race tracks with some AI trains going round at the same time as you

That is one word; ineptitude, incompetence, the list could go on.

Lets hope that most of the "team", including Kaz, are replaced before starting on GT6.

:dunce:👎👎👎

If you replace Kaz and his team, you can effectively say goodbye to the GT series. It would be like what happened to Command & Conquer when EA took over.

Anyway, PD didn't all of these 5 years modelling just the cars. They had to model each of the tracks, along with writing a new physics engine, source code, effect design, graphics, etc etc.

Also remember that PD were thrown the GT PSP side project.

Dude they were taking smoke breaks. and im pretty sure pd had only 1 bathroom so that must have been a problem. Then the had to worry about anthrax and the war on terrorism. there was a lot taking place in the 5 years that pd and the guys had to worry about just like the rest of us were. and lets not forget swine flue. that must have delayed production at least 6 months.

Can you see the seriousness in the post:sly:

These guys weren't doing something and i really want a straight answer on this. Not another one of KY's ridiculous answers I want a real REASON TO WHY IT TOOK 5 YEARS
