Why did they remove features from GT1? - Rant

I recently got GT 2 (yeah, i take a while to catch on), and i was really disappointed with it.

Firstly, wrt the graphics. The new save/load screens are ugly, and why is there no option to save/load your game without quitting to the main menu or finishing a race? The new orange for the HUD is hideous...looks faded.

The new race structure sucks. I liked driving those championships, and this single race feast is pretty boring, especially with the lack of qualifying! Why did they cut that?

I dunno...they added rally, more cars and tracks, and more parts...but they took away some parts of the game with no apparent reason.

It baffles me.

Anywho, i'm stepping up to a PS2 soon. After seeing that gran durifto 2 video i must buy GT3...to stop the drooling :)

Well, GT1 and GT2 are two different animals. I still play GT1 for the different "game feel"; but other than the chance to really annihilate the competition, qualifying was always tilted in the AI's favor.

I've always had the belief that the AI's times were for "rolling" laps (best time after the car has completed a lap, faster because the car has passed the timing booth at racing speeds); rather than the one "standing" lap which you have to complete. So qualifying only proved how you measured up to the competition; if you were a long way back in 6th: trouble ahead. If you were a close 5th or 6th, it was going to be a good race. And if you were atop the others by 5 or 6 seconds, you could win it with your eyes closed. As it is, sometimes you want the championship to be over as soon as possible!

I agree, the championship format makes things more interesting. That's the way I like to race in GT2, try to do all 3 races with the same car, no upgrades if possible. But GT1 forces you to complete a series of races for a prize car, rather than the sea of cars GT2 awards you. Remember that GT2 has over 580 cars, GT1 had about 180. They have to all get in there somehow.

I wounldn't necessarily call the graphics ugly in GT2; in GT1, very little of the text was anti-aliased, and it appeared choppy. The car renderings are little changed from GT1 to GT2, no complaint my me. My gripe in GT1 is the stack of lap times right where you make left-hand turn apexes (in driver's view)...a flaw remedied in GT2. However, I long for the gear ratio charts from GT1 that are back in GT3, I've heard.

More tracks in GT2. More realistic car physics. More cars; that's what I like. I find it hard to fault. I still think it's an improvement from GT1, despite the 80-100 cars I rarely use.

So what I usually hear is this:
GT1: play it for pure game play
GT2: play it for the wealth of cars
GT3: play it for the intense graphics

My biggest complaints are that in a time trial you have to quit to change settings. And you have to quit the game way to save. I also wich you could still qualify.

But the cars are awesome and I haven't played GT1 since I got GT2.

Yeah, i noticed that...you cant alter the boost pressure any more.

Weird.

I wouldve expected GT2 to be a mere expansion on GT1, with added components tracks and cars. I wouldnt have touched anything else.

The HUD colour is worse now...looks sherberty :p

GT2 was rushed to market, that's why it feels unfinished: it is. They kept on bumping the release date, then, all of a sudden - it was released.

I found out how they managed it after I started playing. It does have some improvements - better control, MUCH better sound, and almost 600 cars. :)

umm, why do u come into the GT2(yes that stands for GranTurismo 2) forums, and tell me that the game it self stinks, because it is much better than gt1, and anyways, i never did use the qualifacations. :thatsodd:  😈 :thatsodd:

I think cubits has a valid point, he's comparing the evolution of GT1 to GT2. But that doens't mean you have to agree...bugs and all, it's still hard to beat two and three-quarters of a year later.

Many games grab you for a moment or two, but after playing it to the fullest, there is little to do with it but use the CD as a drink coaster. I don't find that to be the case with GT2 because I enjoy cars and racing. If they aren't your bag, then it's understandable to be bored with it and move on to another game. Right now, there is probably another gaming forum where using the Escudo in GT2 all day long is rather acceptable.

Of course, we'll laugh at you here for that.

Cheap!? You must have mega bucks ($$$) if you can pay out $2 million and call it cheap.

And it doesn't make the game too easy - about 70% of the game it does though. :D For example, the most hardest championship in the game in many peoples' opinion in the GT300. You can't even enter the Escudo in that race because the horsepower limit is way under that of the Escudo.

#1....The Escudo IS driveable.....some uhh...s l o w people can't understand how to tune a car.

#2....The Escudo is a cheaters car.

So I'm slow, eh? Well, then you go right ahead and tell me how to deal with a turbo that is all on/all off. Or how to drive a car that wants nothing more than to spin its wheels helplessly, rather than apply the power in a meaningful way? I've tried everything in an attempt to make the Escudo drivable. It isn't, and don't try to buffalo me into believing that by insulting me.

The Escudo is a Suzuki. 'Nuf said. But as long as I'm here...

Why anybody would even take the time to "tune" a hill climbing vehicle for road racing is beyond reason. It's like "tuning" a GT One for Tahiti Maze. There are so many great cars in GT2 that there's no point in screwing with cars you don't like, let alone ones that pretty much suck.

Yeah. And the Speed 12 sucks too!

Well, maybe you have some touch with the Escudo...but don't run around calling people names, 'kay? :loudmusic

...is this the GT2 Escudo or the GT3? I've heard they're very different, and I've never driven one (extensively) in GT2.

The GT2 Escudo...

I only get to play GT3 on wife's friends husbands PS2 on the weekends when we go down to visit (usaully we get drunk as hell...so my GT3 experience is tainted with alcohol. lol ).

I'll post my GT2 Escudo setup just as soon as I finnish this season of GameDay 2002 (I'm too lazy to actually SAVE the game on a card, and just play the whole season without ever turning the Playstation OFF lol )......anywhooooo.

Mebbe so, but it's still more manageable than the Scud (sorta).

It's pretty good for the Test Course or Super Speedway.

hmm"It's pretty good for the Test Course or Super Speedway" well atleast its good at something, for 2,000,000 its good at the 2 easiest tracks in the game  wow what a good deal :D

the Escudo was put in the game for the whimps who just want to win and the actual addicts that are only going to use it in their first trip through the game.

other than that, it's cheating.
i cheated, i used it for endurance races.
big deal.

yes, very well put, j2s is a whimp and so are you, and so am i, and i'm sure everyone else is a whimp, but what the heck? if you know you could beat it with a stinky car, than is it really cheating? why yes it is, and if you can beat it with a stinky car, why not, its more fun, escudo doesn't suck, thats the problem
