why do i find snow and certain rally races so difficult?

The thing that helped me is a little different. If you are using the view where you can see your car. Change the view to where you just see the hood. That made it so much easier for me, i can beat cars by almost a minute now, where i could only barely beat them or lose. If you are already using that view, then i dont know.

Just started the "Normal Rallys" - Can anyone recommend a good RC and set up for Normal and Hard Rallys. Currently tried Subaru Proto-Type, RSC Rally Raid, & Lancia Integrale and can't quite seem to get an edge to pull a win out (Grand Canyon etc.). :banghead :ouch:

Allnighte
*pick a rally car (4WD, under 1300kg, ~300hp)
*go nice and easy. no need to wait until the last second to brake. apexes are still critical to make
*swing your rear end out just before the turn. this means turn hard/quickly and then apply the brake (unless you can pendulum yourself before the turn). after your car is pointing almost perpendicular to the road, get on the gas a bit. now here's the trick: MORE THROTTLE = WIDER TURN. if you notice yourself getting closer to the inside wall, GIVE IT GAS. if you notice yourself drifting to the wall behind you, TAKE YOUR FOOT OFF THE GAS
*practice, practice, practice

Here's a video of my drifting :)

Do the driving aids have to be on or off?

Have completed the Special conditions a few days ago. For the rally stages (dirt and snow) I used my Subaru Impreza Rally Car Prototype '01. Did almost all Hard rallies with it too. My best win was Tahiti Maze Reverse. Did that one with my Impreza, had to race against a Ford RS200 Rally Car, was 123 points or so, and I won. I beat the RS200 with 7 secs or so. Was in front from the first corner.. :)

The Grand Canyon on Hard, I did that one with my Toyota RSC Rally Car. By going via the walls. With my rear, then you won't get penalties. I was tired of those penalties, so I did it the alternative way. Just wanted to pass the Special Conditions Hall, maybe I'll try it again and do it the proper way. :)

But for the tarmac races on hard, you don't need that fast cars. Tsukuba Wet was with my Minolta Toyota 88C-V Race Car. George Paris was with my Takata Dome NSX and Mazda RX-7 Infini Race Car.:)

this will be a very obvious point to most people here but if there's anybody out there really having problems and is new to the finer concepts of rally driving....turn the driving aids completely off on a 4wd car. otherwise you can't oversteer for drifting, which is incredibly easy on the dirt conditions once you've done this. your times will drop drastically.

Here is what I did (I had a hell of a time trying to complete the dirt and snow, road was easy because i used the RX-8 concept race car too)

1) Spent $750,000 on the peugeot rally car
2) Went driving in the snow, it sucked BADLY (too light?)
3) Sold the peueot race car
4) Bought the Suberu Sti Spec c '05? (White one, not the rally)
5) Decked it out to get about 500kW, no weight reductions (buy the tyres)
6) I turned off ASM, TSC can stay on but i turned it off as well
7) In the snow events (ice arena ESPECIALLY), accelerate completely to the corners and just before you come to the corner either...
a) Use handbrake to spin rear around so that the rear of the car bumps into the outer edge of corner (stopping you VERY quickly) then accelerate out.
b) Turn car towards outer edge of corner (you end up being right up against the wall, cant turn into the wall any further) and just use the outer edge to guide you around the corner
NOTE: Methods (a) and (b) are usefull in different circumstances, its up to you to decide which method works better.

I also find that ramming the car you are racing is usefull sometimes as well, but nudging your way in between without the penalty is much better :)

methods (a) and (b) are also sort of cheating, and so is the ramming. So if you dont like cheating it isnt the way to go (I myself hate cheating, but i also hate going so damn slow in the snow events)

good luck!

Doing the rally races were hard at first since I had to get used to the new physics, but now I am starting to have lots of fun drifting on the rally races after perfecting my driving techniques.
