Why Do We/You Pick Your Nose?

First of all lets get the immature "Eww... you pick your nose? I don't" out of the way.

So why do we have to pick our noses at all?

Why do you pick your nose? (I don't want details of the actual act)

I know we have Nasal mucus for a reason to act as a filter much the same way an air filter or more specifically a K&N air filter will work but why is it labeled a bad habit?

I can think of so many times where I literally had to pick my nose because I couldn't breath or I had an itch caused buy the nasal mucus. Anyway, it's something that's been picking at my brain for no reason. I say watching people blow their noses is just as gross.

BTW, obviously... when picking mine I'm in private and sanitary about it. :dopey:
 
Picking your nose with the intention of eating it is no good. I still pick my nose when it needs picking, but only if a Q-tip is not available.
 
I think the reason it’s such a bad habit is that there’s really no place to… you know, put it once you get it out. :yuck:

Dried snot is hard to get out any other way. Picking at yourself is what fingernails are for - ear wax, snot, scratching your skin, oh and opening coke cans.

I think my wife never picks her nose. I don't know how she survives - actually I guess she doesn't really. She blows her nose constantly trying to get rid of dried snot that refuses to come out. Sometimes I just want to say "put your finger up there!", but I know it wouldn't do any good - she wouldn't do it.
 
Occasionally a tissue can only do so much, so the finger must be put to good use. Where I work, it gets a bit dry and dusty, so I'll come home with some nasty crap in my nose every night. You've got to clear it out I'm afraid. Then again, I do pick it just to bother my Mom sometimes...

I heard a rhyme when I was like 7, which was along the lines of; 'Pick it, lick it, roll it, flick it'.
Seems like the perfect way to dispense of it to me...
 
I get satisfaction from knowing that my nose is clean and I can breathe more freely, especially if I do it before going to sleep.
 
Sometimes when boogers dry up on the inside wall of your nasal cavity, a tissue or a Q-tip will not get it out.

And i guess its human nature. We are animals and various animals like to groom themselves in various ways
 
If one soaks their finger and thoroughly wet the inside of their nasal passage, the crusty compound will eventually subside without bleeding. Being a chronic nosebleed victim, I learned this the hard way...

I only pick it at school, between classes, in the washroom, because the teachers only hand out paper towels. The parchment is too 'parched' to be effective in a clean job, so I blow my nose into my hand in the sink, and clean up the rest with my finger. And that's why I pick my nose.

However, a British science column suggested that humans may have (at an earlier time) been sexually attracted to each other for this habit.

I still think it is for survival: tissues weren't around when Neanderthals walked the Earth!
 
Good for the immune system? That's all I needed. Atleast now I have a valid excuse, albeit without evidence.
 
Sometimes you just gotta do it. A tissue won't get the job done on those dried up ones stuck in your nose hair. Of course I wash my hands after a gold digging adventure. :)
