Why is my computer fan running so much?

I'm on a HP Pavilion laptop, and recently the fan has started running nonstop.

It used to run silently unless the computer was working on something but now it runs even with the desktop idle. I've checked the HP site for solutions and they recommended updating the BIOS, which didn't help at all.

Anybody know why it could be running like this, and how to fix it?

Maybe it doesn't need fixing. Maybe it's working as designed and is just a wee bit noisier than when new.

Make sure you're not blocking any vents on the bottom of the case. My daughter's laptop locked up one evening when she was running it on the bed. Had the fan's intake completely blocked.

The fan on my HP EVO laptop cycles, but it seems to run more when the charger is plugged in. Power supply adds heat, I guess.

The thing that makes me thing something actually happened to the actual computer is that I remember all of a sudden noticing that it was especially loud when it used to be silent before. Everybody else I know that has a similar laptop says theirs still runs silently and the only thing they can hear is the hard drive turning, which is very quiet. I guess it is possible that something may have gotten stuck in it, but I'm not sure.

And the computer isn't especially hot either.

My HP Pavilon has started doing that too. It may be a build up of dust inside, but I've never got around to checking it cause I can live with it. But it's a fairly common HP fault.

If I were to guess, I would say fan noise, i.e. bearings, dust, dirt, some debris in there. How old's the laptop? Most fan noise starts up after the first 18 months. Just a guess.

Also, can you adjust the fan speed with the bios? If so, determine if it's noisy at low speeds or if the fan is in fact running at full speed.
