Why is the Gillet Vertigo car so slow?

I have vague recollections of the Vertigo being very slow when purchased in previous GT incarnations. You had to tune it quite specifically to get the most out of it.

It seems it's still very slow when you purchase it in GT5, but with a power-to-weight ratio better than the Minolta and more modern aero, it really should fly better than it does. Granted, FR isn't the best drivetrain for top-flight racing, but still...

Grinding my B-spec from 35 to 40 at present, I decided to skip using the X2010 and let Bob, Bob and Bob use the Vertigo. Foolishly thinking it did not matter where they placed at the finish line - I would still get the same XP.

Checked at race end last night, they came in 10th! I got a whisker of XP and about 17K credits.

Seriously, what is *up* with that Vertigo?
Anyone have any essential tuning tips to get the best out of it, or was it a terrible purchase?

...or was it a terrible purchase?
This:ouch: Goes fine in a straight line.. and thats it. I learnt my lesson about this car in GT4, never again. Could almost swear this car was american from the way it drives. I could never get it to stick to the track like any other car, sold promptly after that

:ouch:

If you could fit a motor and wheels to a Sensor Excel or Mach III, it would still lap faster than the Vertigo Racecar.

Lol ;) one of my friends last year said that modern F1 looked like a razor on wheels (Long thin body with a tall, square wing at the back) Try the Ferrari F10!

I had the Vertigo in GT4 and never raced it, handles like a small moon.

...handles like a small moon.

I *wish* it handled that well!

But I do recall someone posting some great settings for the Vertigo in the past which really brought it to life.

At least it sounds really unique and revvy.

It's almost like the crazy Belgians did all the hard work and then when it came time to race tune all the parts, they just bunked off work to get some waffles and Hoegaarden instead.

Two words....
Gear Ratio

Change the top speed and the car will go much faster. It is simply geared low. I still do not like the car but you can get some good speed out of it.

Y'see, that's the problem the poor Vertigo had when it appeared in the LTW race. Hence why you overtook it on Lap 4 every time. If you drove alongside it on a straight, you could hear the poor thing bouncing off the redline.

Even with stretching the thing right out for an Indy race, stacking front downforce and sawing the entire rear wing off the back, it still won't go round the "corners" without dabbing the brake.

I've yet to work out how to set it up so that it stops understeering like an oil tanker in space.

Are you kidding me? Ive hit 420 km/hr slipstreaming on like the wind in the Vertigo WORKING all the other cars. Just needs custom tranny. Massive power to weight.

For the avoidance of doubt, I did indeed fit a fully customisable transmission and stretch the blighter out.

It's faberiffic in a straight line, f'sure, but I don't seem to have unlocked the hidden "drag strip" track yet...

It's when it comes to cornering it starts to dissappoint.

I do believe the resolution may lie in the suspension settings.

I guess if the transmission settings are that far out of whack when you buy it, the suspension settings may also be out of kilter.

I did try and tinker with it, but it completely went up the spout and handled like a rabid badger in heat. (and they don't corner that well).

ive got one of these and all you need to do is fiddle about with the transmission, suspension and aerodynamics. by no means does it make it a great handling car, but it certainly makes it more managable.

In previous GT games, this car was really great once you got the setup right. I would guess GT5 is the same.

I bought it cause it looks cool. Never driven it.

But that applies to over 200 cars in my garage. I've driven maybe 100 if that. The rest are ornaments.

Which brings me to a totally OT thought... Every time you buy or win a car there should be a bonus race tied to it.

I love this little beast, I gave it a little test on the top gear track and I thought it was a rocket. Sounds great too, just need to tune it a bit so I can get it around corners.

I'll have to persevere with it and have a play around with the suspension more. I've been trying to read Scaff's GT4 .pdfs recently anyway.

Twiddling downforce in isolation isn't helping.

Rear downforce is basically set to "off" and front downforce is set to maximum.
I even duct-taped a large mammal to the front of the car in the hope of adding some weight to the front tyres, but it still wants to drive in a straight line at fast bends.

Guess I'll try softening the front springs and stiffening the rear.

...

I'll probably remove the mammal from the front of it, too.

Its not that it is slow, it just does not handle very well for a race car, which I don't understand because it weighs less then 1000 kg but it is probably because it is a front engine car.

bang on there i used the vertigo to win like the wind, traded it on now

That just some funny right there

After reading this thread now I wished I had bought this car.

Do you people really race cars in the game without adjusting them?

Try this:

Aero: 35 / 50
Transmission: 217mph (modify for your track)
Initial Torque: 34
Acceleration Sensitivity: 22
Braking Sensitivity: 20
Ride Height: -14 / -12
Spring Rate: 17.1 / 16.9
Extension: 7 / 8
Compression: 6 / 7
Anti-roll Bars: 5 / 5
Camber Angle (-): 2.6 / 2.3
Toe Angle: -0.10 / 0.14
Brake Balance: 7 / 5

I laugh all the time when I race against this car on the indy track, you can hear it's engine just going, "I think I can, I think I can...I can't".

OK I tried it. That thing is an SR71. VERY fast in a straight line. And capable of turning around in just under 100 miles.

I enjoy the vertigo alot, I'm not sure why so many people dont like it.

Just so you know it is pretty much making you have an open diff setting initial torque to 30+. Especially when you have accel sensitivity at 22 only. Very unrealistic and not fun.
