It's not important to smile in a photo. People who force themselves to smile for the camera look stupid in the picture. Photos should capture and/or record what was there, not bring "there" into being for itself.

Smiling has to do with giving a friendly (and.. being submissive..) image. A lot of people do it. Human nature.

I'm not sure why most people force a smile. But it's not even really a smile because it's forced, unless, of course, being photographed really makes you happy.

Maybe part of it is that people want to remember happiness, and since most people have very selective and/or bad memories, they smile to prove how happy they were, whether they really were or not.

It's tough to photograph black people when they wear white clothes (that suit is absolutely hideous) like that. Either you see their face and the clothes are over-exposed. Or you don't see their face and their clothes are exposed properly.

As a psychologist student, here's my analysis.

A smile hasn't much to do with laughter. It is a signal that tells ppl "I'm not harmful". Laughter has other qualities. A forced smile is almost always used to show that you are not hostile.

In a way it has to do with ones feeling of self-worth and security. A person that has high self esteem uses the smile less than other people

I prefer photos that represent the subjects accurately... umm... maybe essentially is a better word. For instance, my wife does not walk around with a big posed grin on her face all day. My favorite photo of her is one where she didn't even know I was taking the picture. She wasn't smiling. She thinks it's weird and says stuff like "I wasn't even smiling". I say "I know".

I agree. I prefer photos where the subject is ignorant to the fact that they are being photographed.

My dad has taken thousands (more?) of our family over the years, but I like the candid shots more than the posed shots.
