Why is that my brother whom lives in the apartment next to me can play gt5 online every try and I continually get "could not connect to server"?

I have a connection, same router, browser works on ps3. What the hell is going on? Why has there been no official word on this?

Does it only allow certain serial numbers or what?

If I had to take a guess, It's probably because of your NAT type on your router.

You need to log into your router and open ports for PS3/PSN is my guess.

Are you using the same router with him or separated? You cant join to the server if you using same router with him because it's same IP from router. i believe this help you out

Nah he lives in the apartment next door. I've got my own network here.

Yeah then, you need to open nat. Someone posted guide link above of yours. I hope it work out for you.

If he's using something like a wireless-G access point, it will only assign a single IP address for one device, with a wireless router it will allow you to attach multiple devices, assigning a IP addresses attached one.

ps3 is on DMZ and it still doesn't work. Furthermore this is the only game that will not connect online. We play Red Dead Redemtion with no problems.

Yes Jinx is correct, try using that guide and maybe looking up some you tube videos on how to open ports for PS3. That is more than likely your problem.

Also depending on your router, most new ones have easy ways to open ports for PS3/Xbox. On mine they call it application forwarding and there is a drop down you can select to enable PS3.

Okay.. are you able to join ANY game on GT5 or is it just the ones your friend is in?

As soon as the game loads, the message pops up "A connection to the server could not be established". Then when you hit ok, it waits 5 minutes with the gt5 logo and displays it again. Then you hit GT Mode and wait another 5 minutes and it displays yet again. Once in GT Mode, you select online lobby and it says "You cannot use this function, as you are not currently online"

Yeah so it's not even connecting at the start of the game then. You can see your friends online and all that though right? You might want to try connecting PS3 to router with ethernet cable, if possible. If you do, you will need to go to PS3 network settings and change it to wired. Just to see if that makes a difference.

Last night I found a way for GT5 to tell you your NAT type and bandwidth. I'm pretty sure it's in GT mode, then settings and one of the options there. Try checking that and see what it says.

NAT is type 2 according to the ps3. Yes, I can see my friends and message them from the ps3. I just can't do anything online in GT5.

Okay well NAT type 2 is good, that's what you want.

Were going to need to connect the PS3 by ethernet cable to your router, this will tell you if it's a router config issue or not. Also I believe in the manual there is a page that shows exactly what ports need to be open for GT5. I would do that after trying to hook it up, though.

If that still doesn't do it.. I need to know what the exact model number of your router is.

One more thing if you haven't already done this, reset your router by unplugging it from the back for 30 secs and plug it back in.

** watching this closely, I am having the very same problem.

I have no issues with any other games. Could it still be a router problem regardless?

I broke down and called sony support. They had me erase system cache and installed files for the game, reset my playstion to default settings under the system menu, re-setup my network, and it went online.

Still don't know what the problem was, but I can now get online.

However, online appears to suck balls. You get 830hp cars you never earned?!

I was really hoping to play my best car v my friends best cars, but when they have the option to pick anything, of course they will choose the best they can. It's gay.

Better would be a seperate online game where you start at level 0 and earn your way up again by playing online.

You can race online with your best car just have to set it to favorite.

That's good to hear! 👍

I wouldn't have thought it to be a PS3 issue since everything else was working, but you can never go wrong with resetting everything back to defaults xD

Sure, but other people get to choose cars they never even earned, so it's pointless. Of course they would choose the 830hp car, who wouldnt. If you put a hp restriction they'll just choose the closest to it. It's gay because they get to use cars they never earned is my point.

That makes your achievement of no value.

Ohh ok I got you. So you want a only pick from my garage selection lock.

Well, this is what GTP is for. Race with friends from here, who place restrictions on power/weight and communicate between races about which cars and tracks to run.

I want a "I pick from my garage" and "You pick from your garage" with "No cars we didn't earn in single player ourselves" option.

As it is, online populates your garage with a bunch of impalas and other cars you never got yourself.
