WHY WHY WHY WHY Won't Land Rover sell the Defender here?

Because Northern Ireland still has high damnd for them to convert them into Armored Land Rovers to carry around Riot police.

I see Defenders all the time in Houston.

as a reply to the second post, screw the environmental studies there is no global warming, the sun is responsible for warming up the planet not us driving cars.

Mmm, educated

This is not the thread for discussing the environment.

What was that internet meme thing with a guy in a Wrangler.#

Also, you have no dignity if you drive a Wrangler in the UK. Fact.

I think your dignity's pretty compromised with most Chrysler products over here, but the Wrangler does have a habit making people look fantastically stupid. I can't quite put my finger on why, but you do indeed look utterly ridiculous. Maybe something to do with people waking up and realising that driving round pretending to be an American teenager isn't a good look - particularly when the place you're cruising around is Watford, not LA. The only thing worse for it is a Sebring Convertible, I'd say.

I say all this coming from owning a car that old women buy because they like the colour of the seats, of course.

Can anyone name a single great car that doesn't have an embarrassing subculture?

Jeeps: Fabulous homosexuals (no disrespect intended), idiot teenagers, people who wish they were idiot teenagers...
Miatas: Hairdressers
Land Rovers/Every good offroader: Soccer moms/pro athletes

My point being that there's no point in discouraging yourself from buying a certain car because of the people you're going to be associated with.

It's a Jeep, brah!

Soccer mums go with the "luxo-SUVs"/soft-roaders that actually don't do the off-road business very well. RAV4, Territory, BMW X5 or Porsche Cayenne if they're loaded, etc. Never seen anyone do the school run in a 2.8 turbo diesel Patrol or an FJ40 SWB LandCruiser, just to make the point. Prado or Kakadu LM maybe, but not the REALLY good off-roaders.

I went to school in a very upper-middle class neighborhood. Every mom drove a Range Rover.

heh. that's the first time I've seen someone outside the US use the term "soccer mom".. the soccer mom's started with the wagons/estates, then minivans, then the full on SUV's. the estates and minivans are tainted by the soccer mom rep, and all SUV's went out the window the second we finally hit the 5 buck mark. guys won't go near the Crossover segment because it's not manly enough, and most women won't touch them cause they're TOO manly. this kinda leaves nothing but pickups and sedans up here

Don't ever say that if you come to America, you will be shot. The only vehicle that is taken more seriously then a Wrangler is a Pickup truck.

Don't ever forget with Defenders.

If you crash into a tree with one, the tree will move. Not the other way around. Hard as nails.

We get that too...

I formerly worked in the 4wd Industry in Australia.... it was a well known phenomenon that Jeep and Land Rover owners are all a 'special' type of breed.

To paraphrase a conversation held at a 4wd expo:

Joe Public (talking to near-teenage son directly in front of my manager): "Now, wait here with daddy while I talk to a man about a bullbar"
Manager Paul: "Would you perhaps be chasing a bullbar for a Jeep or Land Rover"
Joe Public (in total shock and disbelief): "WHY YES!!!! HOW DID YOU KNOW???"

It was very rare to deal with an owner of these vehicles that you wouldnt call eccentric.

Stereotypes exist for a reason it seems :)

I was aiming that more at the "every other good off-roader" part of the quote rather than the Land Rover part.

There's a bit of a difference which member of the Rover family it is.

Range Rovers are luxury cars for those who like the off road look, Land Rovers - mainly Defenders as Freelanders and Discoveries are on the soft side - are well proven tools for a job and that job doesn't include looking shiny but getting to places difficult to reach and coming back.

Actually, despite the luxury in Range Rovers, they are still immensely capable off road vehicles. They have always been and as of now, still is.

Many of the magazines over here have said that in some ways the modern LR products like the Range Rover and Land Rover Discovery are actually better than the Defender off road, as the modern electronics allow them to do things the tech-free Defender simply can't. Automatic gearboxes tend to help rather than hinder these days too, again because electronics have become so sophisticated, and the Defender is manual-only.

For the hardcore off-roader the Defender is probably still better, but literally only for the really, seriously experienced off-road guys.

(and cooler since the steering wheel is on the wrong side).

The steering wheel is on the right side.

See what I did there? :dopey:

While we're complaining about Land Rovers...

Why can't we get that with the diesel over here? C'mon Land Rover, you know you want to be awesome and give it to us...

Do strippers usually own Wranglers?
In Miami they do. The truck's top comes off just like theirs.

I'll just go ahead and admit that the Defender has better offroad equipment as standard. But many Jeeps don't stay stock for long.

It's only because of the airbags. LR will gladly sell you a petrol engined Defender using the same engines in the Discovery/ LR4, but most people just get the diesel. They end up selling petrol engined models as limited edition types.

Do strippers usually own Wranglers?

There's a law in Florida that says strippers are the only people that can buy Wranglers bare-bones with no safety equipment. The only stipulation is that she has airbags pre-installed.

In Miami they do. The truck's top comes off just like theirs.
