Why you shouldn't drag race on the streets

Yesterday night someone I knew was struck by a car doing 80 in a 25 MPH speed zone. She was killed on impact. Today I went to the site of the crash. There was broken glass everywhere, no body or smashed car. I paid my respects by lighting a candle. Later I found out that it was two teens drag racing last night while she pulled out of her street and killed her. I barely knew her (we went to school together, but she is an upperclassman), but all I know is that she had several academic recognitions and she played soccer in the high school. She was a really good person.

Let this be a stern warning to those who even dare to race out in the streets.
 
What was really disturbing is that it happened two small blocks away, so I needed some closure.
 
Street Racing is really stupid in my opinion. However, I see nothing wrong with it if it's a street out in the middle of nowhere with no traffic on the road. But, if you want to race, you should take it down to your local drag strip or circuit.
 
Someone from my high school died while street racing. Crashed into a tree with two other passengers in the car. One of the passengers was a friend of a friend. If I ever become Governor of Pennsylvania, one of the first things I would do is open more tracks.

It was a suburban neighborhood with a 25 MPH speed zone. The drag racer was going 80. And seeing how it was a saturday night, It was probably busy. It doesn't matter if it was in the middle of nowhere or a packed city. Street racing is damn wrong.
 
I remember seeing a documentary about street-drag racing. I'd say they should go to a circuit (or strip) or invest in a racing game, instead of doing the drag's on the street. It's safer for everybody.
 
While I don't mind a few people having a little friendly race, i.e. just passing each other on the motorway, I don't agree with stuff like this. If you want to race, take it to the track.
 
^Racing is racing, regardless of where it happens and unless it's on a track, it's illegal.
 
Ahh, I remember racing a Pontiac GTO in the city. It was fun but it isn't something that I will do, besides, I go to autocross.

I know. I wasn't saying I supported it, I was just saying it didn't really bother me as much as the idiotic kids trying to be Vin Diesel.
 
I used to goto weekly meets about 10 miles out of anywere. It was only when a 3000GT that was heavily modified smashed into a police car at about 120 mph that we all realised that we shouldn't be doing this. From then on nobody went to that place again. It was horrible.
 
I was into our local racing scene back when it was popular in my home town. We never did it in town or in busy places but regardless of how fun it was, it should be saved for a track. Unfortunately our track was closed in the winter and only had races 1-2 times a month, so there wasn't a whole lot of track time available. Fortunately there were never any large incidents.
 
I'll openly admit this. Back in my youth, we did street / highway racing ... point to point, usually about 1/4 mile stuff. We did it late at night / wee morning hours, thinking that there is nobody on the roads and it will be safe to do so, (yeah, kinda stupid on our part for believing this). While we never incurred any such tragedy or incidents as you mentioned, *reflecting back on this*, it was sheer stupidity, something that should NEVER be done on the streets. If you want to drag race somebody, take it to the track where it belongs. Every drag track that I know of has an "Open Class" for this kind of stuff.

So sorry to hear of your loss, even though you barely knew her.
 
Sorry to hear about your loss. It always hurts more when they was doing nothing wrong yet some inconsiderate ass was being stupid and ultimately ended her life.

If you want to race then go to a track. That is what open track days are for.

P.s. If you have seen a video on YouTube before, it's more fun racing with cruise control than just flooring it. Just do a 55-65 pull with just the cruise control button. Only do it if there aren't a lot of people around you though.
 
The worst thing is the fact that it takes this for those involved to understand why not to do it. There were 2 roads i used to speed on both fortunately containing no junctions so i knew it was pretty safe, however i crashed driving on one of them doing 55mph after i had just dropped off my friend (ironically he joked about me driving like a granny because i refused to speed with someone else in the car) and wrote off my car, the crash gave me a fright but what really hit home was the fact that the road was lined with small fenceposts and every so often a large post about a foot in diameter, had i hit that i'd have had no chance. Well it turns out i missed the post by about 1-2cm but i had to realise how stupid the 10 second rush i'd have gotten from speeding was compared to possibly losing my life. I should mention the crash wasn't my fault as the car had an electrical failure in which the lights fused and turned off it was just unfortunate that it was on an unlit road.

As i say its just sad that it requires a death or near death for people to realise this.
(I don't speed on roads anymore i go to track days, there much more fun anyway.)👍

It might be fun to speed, but I heard its also fun to be in the hospital. Moral of story: If you speed, Kaz will hunt you down and memorize every GTR ever made.

If anyone wanted to race on the streets badly, at least do it in a place that won't risk other people, on the track that is.

If that's not possible, do it in a remote quiet country roads/interstate highway, or do it wangan style after midnight like in Tokyo ( simple point to point - one lose if cannot keep up ). Okay that last part was not serious, just kidding ;)

Friendly advice : Train to handle fast car first, put a racing harness and a decent roll cage for safety, and also fire extinguisher. A full face helmet won't hurt either.

One of the drag racers was in a black Camaro, and the victim was in a Honda civic.
