Hi Forum,

Me and some friends found out that smoke is a pretty weird thing.

We took our drift cars for a spin with very low quality results. Only small amount of smoke on each others view on other cars and only in corners. Doing burnouts looks amazingly crappy for those watching in other cars. The tires only spin slowly, the smoke is no where what the "burnout driver" is seeing.

It's like the game engine only allows for smoke to be transfered from one client to another, if the car is sliding.

Launching from a stand still and accelerating past a friend, with tons of smoke is only something you as the driver see. The others don't see anything - no smoke and as far as they can see, a normally accelerating car.

Excuse me, but is THIS GT5. For me it's a very poor attempt to make a racing game.

Were you doing this on split screen or online? I ask because I've played online with numerous people and have been impressed by the smoke effects, not only my smoke but others as well. Its nice how the tires don't smoke automatically when you turn sharp, as the tire gets hotter more smoke comes from that specific tire.

It was online "over the internet". I can almost swear that it wasn't like this in version 1.01. Im not 100% sure though.

We tested several tracks, trying to rule out several things, but you should try it yourself.

Is this to do with the online quality setting? There's one setting for voice quality, the other is for game quality setting.

I'm not sure, but I'm just thinking.

No, it has nothing to do with the quality. This has been tested with both poor quality and very good quality. Those in the test all live close to each other with fat pipes on the net.

I was in a cruising room last night on Tokyo and several drivers stopped at different places along the track to do burnouts. It was my first real online session and I recall thinking how impressive the smoke effects were as I drove by. I could not see their cars the smoke was so thck at times. My NAT type is 2 and UPnP is disabled or not available on my connection (cable 10mb). Hopefully the problems you're experiencing will get better as PD sorts through the server issues.

Weird, might be isolated problem? I've seen my friends kick up impressive amounts of smoke online and they've said vice versa while I was doing donuts. To add to that, in an 8 car online rally race, each car kicked up a phenomenal amount of dirt, making it impossible to see where you were going.
