Never been a Mario fan personally. But yeah, we'll probably try and sell the game on Ebay.
Metroid? Zelda?

There might be one or two decent third party games. And maybe Wii Play.

But that is basically the complete list of good games available right now, unless you all like the party game/mini game thing. Then you have a plethora of games available.

I'm not a nintendo fan in the slightest, except for a brief spell of pokemon. But I don't think I made it clear in my first post that the wii is for my little bro anyway, I just happened to be home when we got the call and I went to go get it.

But yeah, I'll mostly be playing the sport/mini games.... while drunk.

You don't HAVE TO move around when playing Wii games do you? Because i kind of want to get one but i don't want to have to move around, we haven't got enough room in the room to do that anyway. I just want to play it normally.

I play sitting on a couch all the time... its just more fun to stand up and swing the wiimote around sometimes.

No, you can just move your hand around while laying on your back. I prefer the full-immersion mode though.

But games like Zelda I have yet to stand up for. Sports games on the other hand, well let's just say I think of my Wii as a golf simulator.

So MLB Power Pros has taken over my apartment. It's the most addicting game ever. If you're a hardcore baseball fan, I imagine it's even more addicting. Anyone pick it up? You really need to get a good season going for it to be good, but man, is it good.

Yup. You'll "know" when it's a good idea to stand up and do all the motions, and when it's better to just sit back as you would normally. Sports games and party games will typically fall under the former category, while more-traditional games will typically fall under the latter.

My Super Mario Galaxy Thoughts and Questions

I thought about creating a new thread for this, but decided I would keep it in here.

I got SMG for Christmas and have since put in about 10-11 hours worth of game play. I am in the Bedroom now and went ahead and beat Bowser to unlock the engine room, but I need more power stars to get going, so no major leap frogging ahead. So, currently the only Bedroom level I have beat is Bowser.

Why would it take me nearly 11 hours to only get this far? Because I have gotten every star possible in every galaxy except for the 100 coin star (because I have to wait for that one). After I think I am past a galaxy I double check an online walkthrough. This means that for every multi-level galaxy I have the three main stars, a hidden star, and a comet star. Actually, I just remembered I am missing a green star in Battlerock. Anyway, I have completed nearly everything I can in the first three domes, so I am about halfway through.

My thoughts: This is a fun game, however I am not sitting here thinking "OH MY GOSH BEST GAME EVAR!!!!1111!!one!!" Personally, Super Mario World is still the best Mario there is for me. That said, there is a ton of creativity with the gravity effects and the gravity switching levels. I truly enjoy this style of gameplay.

The other side of the creativity coin is the mini-game like annoyance of special levels that require you to use the Wiimote in a special way, such as the Super Monkey Ball-like level or the ray surfing. It seems as if it was thrown in to make sure we noticed that the motion sensing can be used for more than waving around to pick up star bits and shoot at bad guys. If you are going to create something like this then let me point and shoot my turtle shells. My aim sucks with the spin throw, especially under water. Maybe if 90% of the turtle shells weren't being thrown while five fire balls and a couple of rockets were all shooting at you at once? It just seems like when turtle shells are necessary I always seem to be in a situation where I can't take a second to aim properly.

As for the comets, I like this. It adds a touch of replayability. However, I absolutely hate Cosmic Comets. Speed, Daredevil, and Fast Foes all take a level and give it a fun twist of difficulty. Cosmic makes me basically race annoyingly. My least favorite was the Honeyhive Cosmic race where I then learn to do the back flip jump, mid race. Maybe that would have helped sooner?

My biggest overall complaint: camera angles. This wouldn't be an issue if I could fully adjust it on any of the top down full-3D boards, but the best I get is a bit to the left or right and if I am lucky center actually means putting the camera behind Mario. This doesn't create a huge issue but occasionally I find myself walking almost blindly into enemies or falling off an edge because I can't tell if it is planet-like or a platform.

And someone needs to teach Nintendo the difference between a Galaxy and a star system. But that is very, very minor. I just don't use the proper terminology when discussing the game.

Overall it is a fun game and I can't wait until I can power the observatory back up into going to the center of the universe. Although if God tries to steal my starship and makes me, or my Vulcan friend, have to shoot him with a photon torpedo I will be very pissed.

A few questions:

To get the purple coin levels I have to beat the game first and then get purple comets, correct? So, what is the point?

Where is the green star in Battlerock?

Do I ever get to use the bee suit and ghost suit outside of their respective levels?

Why is every Bowser fight nearly the exact same, except for the part of actually getting to Bowser?

Is it just me or do Zelda, Mario, and basically every platformer have the same bland formula for boss fights?

Why does Luigi basically get caught every time he tries something? Shouldn't he be almost equal to Mario?

No Yoshi? (Yoshi planet doesn't count)

Am I the only one that thinks it is fun but not close to meeting the hype, or even the reviews?

Anyway, overall I give this game an 8.5/10. Get rid of the stuck-in mini games and give me full camera control and it would get a 9 or 9.5. To get a 10 Mario would have to look normal while running (not waving his hands back and forth) and it would have to be something out of this world creative.

Because I have gotten every star possible in every galaxy except for the 100 coin star (because I have to wait for that one).
No such thing as a 100 coin star, at least not the way SM64 did it. I suspect trying to get 100 coins is impossible on most of the levels. :)

The other side of the creativity coin is the mini-game like annoyance of special levels that require you to use the Wiimote in a special way...
I thought the "minigame" levels were a welcome change in pace, intuitive, and neither too hard nor too easy.

However, I absolutely hate Cosmic Comets...Cosmic makes me basically race annoyingly. My least favorite was the Honeyhive Cosmic race where I then learn to do the back flip jump, mid race. Maybe that would have helped sooner?
Overall, I think Nintendo did an okay job of helping the player learn the essential moves, but in this case, it sounds like they assumed you'd remember that move from SM64.

It's okay, I had a similar moment when I completely forgot that I could use the spin to extend a jump's height (very necessary for some of the levels you'll encounter later). :embarrassed:

My biggest overall complaint: camera angles.
For me, the camera worked just fine the vast majority of the time, with no fiddling (and I loved not having to fiddle with it). Once or twice, it got stuck behind a wall or on the wrong side of a planet.

I think the best solution to your problem would be to use the free look (up on the D-pad; make sure Mario is sitting still first).

To get the purple coin levels I have to beat the game first and then get purple comets, correct? So, what is the point?
To get every star (120 again). If you do that and then beat the final level one more time, you'll get a better ending and a special bonus that may or may not have already been spoiled for you.

Where is the green star in Battlerock?
If I recall correctly, Luigi is stuck in a glass dome on the underside of one of those UFOs (the same level where you rescued a star from one of those glass domes).

Do I ever get to use the bee suit and ghost suit outside of their respective levels?
Yes, but not very often.

Why is every Bowser fight nearly the exact same, except for the part of actually getting to Bowser?
A. Because Bowser has always required a repetitive strategy in games where you face him multiple times (eg. the original NES game, Mario 64).

B. Because Nintendo wanted to let younger/less-experienced players "beat" the game (save the universe and see the credits roll), while challenging experienced gamers with the task of getting 120 stars (trust me, it's challenging).

Is it just me or do Zelda, Mario, and basically every platformer have the same bland formula for boss fights?
See reason B. above.

Why does Luigi basically get caught every time he tries something? Shouldn't he be almost equal to Mario?
Luigi has always been the more-cowardly, less-successful, bumbling brother. Even the 1989 TV/cartoon show represented this. :)

No Yoshi? (Yoshi planet doesn't count)
Nope.

Am I the only one that thinks it is fun but not close to meeting the hype, or even the reviews?
I think it's one of the best in the 3D platforming genre, if not the best. The controls are intuitive and responsive, the graphics are nice, the orchestrated music tracks are amazing, and it's flexible enough to let players of all skill levels enjoy it without getting overwhelmed or bored. To me, it's the only modern Mario game that has come anywhere close to matching the magic of the classic 2D games. That says a lot.

I was thinking of the purple coins star.

I thought the "minigame" levels were a welcome change in pace, intuitive, and neither too hard nor too easy.
While they worked well and did offer a change of pace I feel like it was just Nintendo throwing them in to say, "Look what else you can do."

Overall, I think Nintendo did an okay job of helping the player learn the essential moves, but in this case, it sounds like they assumed you'd remember that move from SM64.
Crazy thing, I haven't owned a Nintendo system since the SNES, and have barely done anything on my VC copy of Mario 64 because I keep playing Super Mario World. For first-timers to the 3D Mario some control tips weren't revealed until they absolutely had to be done, even though they could have been used earlier. Of course, maybe if I had cracked open the instruction manual....

It's okay, I had a similar moment when I completely forgot that I could use the spin to extend a jump's height (very necessary for some of the levels you'll encounter later). :embarrassed:
Yeah, I've found a few levels where my life was made easier by a wall-jump spin.

For me, the camera worked just fine the vast majority of the time, with no fiddling (and I loved not having to fiddle with it). Once or twice, it got stuck behind a wall or on the wrong side of a planet.
I think for me it was more a case of when walking along I wanted the camera in a different place, but it wouldn't turn and so I would just slightly misjudge my distance and hit an electric barrier or get hit by an enemy. It was a minor issue that would occasionally result in a bigger problem.

I think the best solution to your problem would be to use the free look (up on the D-pad; make sure Mario is sitting still first).
Looking around to find stuff I have no problems with, but it is when moving and the camera wants to be in a certain spot, but I would prefer it somewhere else.

To get every star (120 again). If you do that and then beat the final level one more time, you'll get a better ending and a special bonus that may or may not have already been spoiled for you.
I am pretty sure it has been spoiled for me by now.

If I recall correctly, Luigi is stuck in a glass dome on the underside of one of those UFOs (the same level where you rescued a star from one of those glass domes).
Yep, found it last night. Getting those rockets (I know they have a name, but I forget) to follow me under the platform without hitting something on the way took some careful positioning and timing.

Yes, but not very often.
Tis a shame, I like flying. Still waiting to get my cape.

See reason B. above.
There was just a certain point where I felt like I was playing Twilight Princess all over again. Same boss as before, same attack as before. You know it's bad when you would rather just play random levels than boss fights.

Luigi has always been the more-cowardly, less-successful, bumbling brother. Even the 1989 TV/cartoon show represented this. :)
Yeah, saving him from the "big bug" on Honeyhive by shooting him out of the tree was great.

But, but I like Yoshi. He's my favorite.

I can agree with most of this in that it is a very good 3D platformer, but I haven't had that oh my gawd moment yet that makes me want to just play it non-stop. Honestly, if it weren't for the fact that my wife enjoys watching me play (even though she won't play co-op with me) so we don't have to fight over the TV I would probably be back in Warhawk right now. Heck, I've been replaying GT1 and have even thought about going back to that for a while.

I think if they threw in a very well flushed out story, like Zelda did, I would be more into it because a good story is a weakness that will make me play through an otherwise horrid game.

As I mentioned before, some of the later levels (when trying to get 120 stars) will offer you the challenge that's missing from the boss fights.

Anyone played Pokemon Battle Revolution? I love the graphics, but i'm a bit disappointed with the gameplay. It's not so bad since i have a DS. :)

So who here is planning on getting Brawl? We'll have to make sure we all have each others' friend codes so that we can play online. :)

I almost forgot about Brawl. Thats my reason for wanting a Wii. I can't wait for this game to come out, and I'd love to play with you guys.

So who here is planning on getting Brawl? We'll have to make sure we all have each others' friend codes so that we can play online. :)

Yeah I'll get it when it comes out...maybe someone should start a Wii/DS friend code exchange thread.

Sinxce thsi is my first Nintendo in over a decade I haven't played past Brawl games so I will probably rent it first from Gamefly and then Keep It if I like it. But, it is definitely one I want to check out.

The only problem there is that I usually only get on here at work and so that will require me to remember to look up my Friend Code, write it down, bring it in to work, and then post it.

And I had heard, but am not positive because it is speculation, that in-game you will have to have put in another code specific to teh game for people you want to play with.

Nintendo, usernames please. If I wanted to do data entry I would still have that job at my uncle's engeneering firm I had when I was 16.

Already done. I was just saying we should make sure that all of us who have the game have each others' codes.

The series is called Super Smash Bros., actually. Brawl is the "subtitle" of the latest game.

You should be able to pick up Super Smash Bros. Melee for pretty cheap, or rent it if you like. That's the Gamecube version -- it'll give you a very clear idea of what to expect, and you'll probably enjoy it.

Other than the fact that most usernames aren't 12 characters long, it's really no different from having to input someone's name. I think the Friend Codes system is dumb too, but when parents throw a hissyfit because they didn't know that the Internet Channel can be used to look at porn, I can see where Nintendo is coming from.

As I said, never played it before.

I could borrow it from a friend, but I will likely just wait for this one.

Except it is much easier for me to remember my own username than 12 randomly assigned numbers.

I'll be on that **** like Donkey Kong. Get ready to get ya'll asses whopped. :D

By the way, anyone here got Lego Star Wars?

I'll be buying Brawl, of course. Massive pwnage from the Fire Elbem characters.

Also, finished up Corruption and started a Hypermode save on it for another run through. Overall, very happy about it except the now standard "go find random keys/runes/items" hunts they give every game nowadays.

Finally beat the story mode of Super Mario Galaxy. I decided to just get the necessary stars and quit trying to get them all along the way. The decision came from the Cosmic race in the Engine Room that I still have yet to beat and the fact that a whole new dome opened up. I just said, "screw that," and went to save the princess.

Now I have done a couple of purple comet levels, unlocked red stars, and checked out the trial galaxy. Whoever created those trial levels should burn in Hell.

A quick question: I am supposed to be able to use the red star "anytime." How are we defining any time? As in if I go back to do regular levels they will have a star or just when running around the observatory? Because if it is just the observatory I could care less that I can access two or three more 1-ups. It isn't like those things are hard to come by.

Currently I have 85 stars.

It's just in the observatory. As a result, they're not that helpful or special, but they can save you time in getting to the Garden and Bedroom.

Really, I just saw it as a throwback to the "bonus" you get for earning 120 stars in Super Mario 64 -- being able to shoot yourself onto the roof of the castle and use the flying cap outside.

Also, finished up Corruption and started a Hypermode save on it for another run through.
I did that too, and now I regret it. Sure, the game is more challenging, but killing pirates is soooo time consuming. I've never finished (and will likely never finish) Metroid Prime 2 for that exact same reason.

On the other hand, I'm the type that avoids using hypermode (the ability, not the difficulty). I'll have to try that the next time I'm in the mood to play MP3.

I just wish I could still go back to my first game and fool around with all of the abilities and areas unlocked.

Ditto on the going back and fooling around. I use hypermode a lot, especially the overload bit. I've always played Metroid games for speed, and hypermode helps immensely with that.

Prime 2 I got tired of due to the horrible back tracking, not the time it took to kill stuff.

I have a habit of maintaining as much health as I possibly can. I also play the games at my own pace, enjoying the exploration aspect.

Prime 2 I got tired of due to the horrible back tracking, not the time it took to kill stuff.
The latter exacerbated the former, particularly due to the numerous rooms that locked the doors until you killed/fended off all of the enemies (usually pirates).

Exact opposite here. I'll run through enemies, ignore attackers and such. I think I spent about 13 hours on this all in all... my last one through Prime 1 took about 6 hours I think.

The latter exacerbated the former, particularly due to the numerous rooms that locked the doors until you killed/fended off all of the enemies (usually pirates).

Agreed. I went to play through it again when Corruption was about to come out... and found myself getting so tired of the back and forth setup with locking rooms.

Please help! My wii's in the middle of updating but the update halted, it still says it's updating but nothing's happening, and i'm too scared to turn it off incase of bricking it. What do i do??? :nervous:

That happened to me once (unreliable internet connection), and I turned it off without any adverse effects. Don't quote me on this, but I believe the Wii downloads the update, then installs it.

After all, when Nintendo released that update that would brick mod-chip'd Wiis, they gave those Wii owners a way out:
