In what can only be a hilarious joke, but is actually a testament to the moronic tendencies of British lawmakers, the PEGI has given the peripheral Wii Zapper (not a game, but a peripheral) an age rating. Why? Well, I guess it vaguely looks sort of like a gun, even though it is merely a base for the Wiimote and has no actual gun-like pieces.

Apparently, little plastic vaguely gun-shaped thingies are more dangerous than we thought. Over in the the U.K. the Wii Zapper has already received a PEGI-18 rating for when it is released next month. That seems kind of strange to do for a peripheral; even stranger when you consider that it comes bundled with Link’s Crossbow Training, which is mostly derived from a game that received a “T for Teen” rating in the U.S.

Linky.

I wonder when people realize the flaw in this when they see how little kids can walk into a toy store with a dollar and walk out with a toy ray gun that is infinitely more gun-looking that this is. I can only imagine the hilarity if another Time Crisis game ever comes out.

TC4 is coming out this fall.

I've seen a pic of this "Zapper" before, but I didn't realize that the Wii controllers actually integrated into this thing.

I can understand where the lawmakers are coming from. I don't agree with their overprotectiveness, however.

P.S. I wish they had something like this for PS3. I'd really want the new PS then. :D

You know what I'd really like for the PS3? GOOD GAMES!

But that's a matter for another thread :D

2008.

X360's lineup weren't all that its' first year, but I was pretty impressed with their second year. ;)

It is called the Guncon 3. It will come packaged in Time Crisis 4.

I have three sitting in my cabinet that I consider to be good games, and a number of them on the hard drive.

I don't see the big deal with the Wii Zapper. I actually am afraid it will be awkward because no gun I have ever held has the trigger up front like that.

Perhaps if they just made it look like a phaser...

oh, wait, that'd make it look like a TV remote. NVM.

I'd like it if it were a lot more gunlike, (like that Zapper Capitan N had on him) but, I will say, it could make the next Star Fox game a heck of a lot more fun. Imagine actually being able to move the controls like an aircraft's stick.

I wonder what will happen when they see the Wii Perfect Shot Gun from Nyko.

Now the decision is this or the Zapper?

I'd say the Zapper - it looks nth times cooler..

But the rating issue... Holy crap - people are getting stupider and stupider by the hour..

Here in DK, we don't have a rating system, as such, but you can be damn sure, that when we get, I'll be the first one to park my car across the freeway protesting...

I just wonder if I wouldn't feel better using a handgun while controling movement in my free left hand using the Nunchuck. I would like to try using both before I buy, but Gamefly doesn't rent peripherals and my local Gamestop manager isn't likely to let me test them out.

It depends on how it is done. The ratings in the US are a voluntary self-regulatory system created by the industry and not tied to government in anyway, unless you count arguing with politicians. So it is not any form of official censorship, rather a way for the gaming industry to inform consumers of what kind of content to expect. There is no banned rating like you have in the UK. It works just like the movie ratings do.

Now, when the government does try to regulate gaming I complain with the best of them.

the guncon that will be sold with TC4 will be orange.. well in Canada anyway..

the wii zapper doesn't look much like a gun, but it looks pretty cool.. it inspires me to draw it and make something else out of it..

I don't know, man, you're just not looking. All of these are PS3 exclusive. I can start listing 2008's games for all three consoles if you want me too... it won't be pretty for Nintendo or Microsoft.

As for the Zapper, it is compatible with games such as Medal of Honor: Heroes and Metroid Prime 3. Not necessarily the best games to be marketed to children. I don't agree with the PEGI rating, however, it's not the best thing a child can purchase.

A game is not PS3 exclusive if it came out for another platform before it came out on the PS3. And there is a better chance at the Playstation Eye sucking than there is of it being good. Granted, I agree with you overall, but still.

Even if a PS3 magically materialized in my house (believe it or not, I'd be happy if one did), I'd only buy three, maybe four of the games on that list. Two I'd be perfectly happy without (Ridge Racer is Ridge Racer is Ridge Racer, and I have access to several others in the series; flow is just a free flash game that was given spiffed-up graphics), one I expect to be just as disappointing as its predecessor (GT5), while the last one I've heard is simply excellent (F1:CE). Some of those games are quite a stretch for the label "good."

lol, opinions.

It's okay, we know why you're here. You don't have to pretend to be posting on-topic.

By the way, the Zapper is "compatible" with anything that uses the WiiMote and Nunchuck. All it does is hold the two.

You can only get it in black in Japan. It is either because of laws or just socio-political pressures in other regions where guns are feared or there are incidences of realistic looking toy guns being used that resulted in bad stuff. I know when I was a kid you could get very realistic looking guns, but then a few cases of kids with toy guns getting shot by cops who couldn't tell the difference changed all that.

the wii zapper doesn't look much like a gun, but it looks pretty cool.. it inspires me to draw it and make something else out of it..
I am still thinking I prefer the Nyko gun I posted above more, just because it is used in a more gun-like way.

Except games rated AO don't get official recognition or licencing from any of the 3 console makers, so it is as good as banned anyways.
Outside of the Manhunt 2 debacle I don't believe this has ever become a true problem. As AO is supposed to be the equivalent of an X-rating for movies I think this is a justifiable, voluntary, ban by the console makers. Just like Best Buy refuses to carry adult movies. And as AO can still be put on PC there is still a definite difference between the ESRB system in the US and the government controlled system in some other countries where it can just be blatantly banned/censored from being legally available in any form.

Wait, which one(s) was on another system first? flOw? Unreal? Not being argumentative, just curious.

As for the Playstation Eye, I think its biggest strength will come from being a video chat device in a world where moving long distances for careers is common. So far the only game to truly catch my eye at the moment has been Creature Feature(?). It sounds like a fairly cool take on Lemmings. And then the stuff the R&D guys at Sony have been showing off looks promising.

Now, if I were still playing games like Magic: The Gathering I would have already bought it and be playing games with my friends from the comfort of my living room.

However, like the Wii Zapper, I would like to test this out before paying for it to test out the video editing abilities and whatnot. If/when I have kids I may get it just for the security camera feature so I can make my PS3 a nanny cam while I am at work.

Even if a PS3 magically materialized in my house (believe it or not, I'd be happy if one did), I'd only buy three, maybe four of the games on that list.
I have seven and I believe some of the PSN games are something that seem unappealing until you try them.

one I expect to be just as disappointing as its predecessor (GT5),
If you had a PS3 you would have played the demo of Prologue and found this expectation to be not as accurate as you may fear. Of course, until I at least play Prologue I cannot make a final judgment on this.

while the last one I've heard is simply excellent (F1:CE).
👍

Some of those games are quite a stretch for the label "good."
Some of them are definitely a love them or hate them kind of thing. Although, even though I do not like Motorstorm or Folklore from a pure game perspective they are good, just not my cup of tea. Heavenly Sword is another that falls into the good category, but it isn't worth the money for the length. I think it is definitely a must rent and after they initiate a Greatest Hits or I find a decent used price it will then become a must buy.

lol, opinions.
Which is why you must read everyone's POV on games. I find certain members I agree with more and so I take their advice more, but I still heed some of the warnings of people I don't always agree with.

By the way, the Zapper is "compatible" with anything that uses the WiiMote and Nunchuck. All it does is hold the two.
While this is true it kind of over-simplifies it I think. As compatibility for many games is determined by how reliant they are on the A-button, D-pad, 1-button, 2-button, and + - buttons. While it does just hold the two it does not do it in a way that has your thumb hovering over the face of the remote. If you are using a lot of time trying to reach around and push them it will make the game a lot more difficult. Most games that claim compatibility are ones that have a scheme that uses the analog stick, C-button, Z-button, and point and shoot with the B-button while ignoring most of the main remote face.

No, I meant what I said.

You are going to dismiss everything I said... why?

I did not dismiss your list of PS3 games. I responded with my own opinion on them as an example of how many of them aren't exactly "killer apps" that appeal to almost everyone. If 3-Wheel Drive and I think there aren't really any games worth getting on the PS3, that's our opinion. If you think it's questionable to spend $250 on a Wii, that's your opinion.

I dismissed your on-topic bit because there's no denying that your objective was to make an argument in favor of the PS3 in a Wii thread in the Nintendo forum. That I don't care about, but to pretend that you're sharing your opinion of a rather inconsequential Wii peripheral is kinda silly.

And as AO can still be put on PC there is still a definite difference between the ESRB system in the US and the government controlled system in some other countries where it can just be blatantly banned/censored from being legally available in any form.
I know its not the same, but it isn't 100% different either.

Wait, which one(s) was on another system first? flOw? Unreal? Not being argumentative, just curious.
Unreal.

Kids, this means one thing. Jack Thompson and is moron horde have won.

...:scared:

The first thing that popped in my head was Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection, which is just an ever-so-slightly-spiffier version of the released-for-PS2 Tekken 5. Both of them are among the worst modern fighting games I've ever seen.

No fear, he is about to lose his license. The case is finished and the judge will return with her ruling after the holidays.

In the uk the pegi rating is 12+. and that's because it's used for games that ask you to shoot at stuff.

in regards to banning stuff here ( games ) it's not illegal to own a banned ( Manhunt 2 ) game, just to sell them over the counter.

The law will let me import the game though, and no action can be taken against the importer, or customer.

It would be cheaper to fly to NY and back with the game than get some prick from this country to import it

that thing looks like a Phaser Rifle from Next G

and there actually IS a phaser-shaped remote controll (says the not-yet certified Trekkie). i HAVE one.

for those of us old enough to remember how expensive a NES console started out, and the heart-attack parents had at the price tag...
in the Transformers series, the original Megatron's trans was changed (after the original series) BECAUSE it was too much like a real gun...they used a WaltherP38 as a model. and they'll be even more paranoid nowadays 'cause of Sept 11th and all the crap afterwards.
