Hello everyone,
I have kinda skimmed through this tread and I have seen a lot of negative remarks about the American version of Top Gear. First, I would like to say that no, the American version of Top Gear is no where close to the caliber of the UK Version of Top Gear. The thing is....watch the first season or two of Top Gear UK and then compare it to the US version. Yes, the same people who write and produce the UK version are the people who are also working with the UK version, thus the rehashes of UK episodes, but you have to understand that this show is geared toward people who have not seen the UK version. Yes, they are copying the same challenges the UK guys did, and no they are not that good but I think this show is coming along fairly well and I think they will take off on their own challenges come the second season.
All I ask is give them a couple more episodes before we judge them too negatively; they might just surprise you.
You do realise the Australian version and I'm fairly certain the Russian version both have the Stig right?
ye but the US version has the same actual person not just the name/costume etc...
have u seen the UK version lately, they are all constantly berating him as though he was the Devil for leaving the show - they might as well burn an effigy of him lol
Are you sure? I have read nothing saying that Ben Collins left Top Gear to join the cast of the US Top Gear.
I assumed you were being tongue-in-cheek with this post, but then you kept going back and forth with Joey, so...The TV world is insane people!
Uh, what? BBC is making this show under their BBC America (or is it BBC Worldwide?) production company. The same one that makes the US copies of crappy game shows. No one bought anything except the right to be the channel to broadcast the show. Most of the creative team behind this version have worked on the UK version and are BBC employees. They didnt just buy the rights for the show, the format, the title, the logo and the set but they even took the Stig away from the REAL Top Gear show.
Fifth Gear never took off? For 18 series, 16 before cancellation rumors? Eight years is pretty good for a TV show by American standards.I dont know if u know this but over here in the UK there are similar shows like Fifth Gear and they never took off because largely it was the personalities of the hosts that made Top Gear the success it is.
Are you mad at Ben Collins? Because you know he was in the middle of a lawsuit with the BBC when the American episodes were being filmed, right? Nor is he the first Stig to have outed himself and then forced to leave the show.So having watched the US ripoff with those nursery school hosts trying to be funny, Im never watching it again and shame on the Stig for selling out, he was so important to the UK show and it wont be the same again without that shameless, spineless, tactless tit of a driver to run the lap times.
Not all Americans have legal access to all but two or three series. That is why this show was made. And did you ever think that this is Top Gear with American TV styling? I know a lot of Americans that think the British programming is crap because "The English have a horrible sense of humor that doesn't make any sense."I am fuming about it tbh. All Americans out there just watch the original please, it is and always will be better, and it features American muscle too btw its not exactly British biased so there never was a need for a US version.
What show went that route? I have seen it go UK Show -> American Show and American Show -> UK Show, but never back and forth for the same show like that. Not that I would put it past Simon Cowell though. What TV execs are even doing now is this: US hit show >> UK network buys rights makes UK version >> becomes hit >> US network makes a version of that. And the same works vice versa.
No cross-country show trading is needed. We have or have had three (or four?) CSIs, four Law & Orders and two Dragnets (which Law & order was based on). And every single sitcom featuring a married couple as the main characters has dumb, fat husband with hot, smart wife. If you think we will see this in the future I am guessing you are young.Trust me guys i've been seein this a lot lately - soon we'll be seeing versions of versions of versions of versions it is truly insane.
Well, he did violate a contract and get fired. By the way, he didn't leave, they fired him.have u seen the UK version lately, they are all constantly berating him as though he was the Devil for leaving the show - they might as well burn an effigy of him lol
Where were you when black Stig left? Age alone would have likely necessitated a new Stig by now.not 100% but if u think about it if they use a different racer in other countries then i guess "the stig" is whoevers wearing the suit.
but the fact is its hard enough to compare cars accurately even on the same circuit with the same driver - when that driver leaves though any subsequent lap times aren't exactly going to be comparable - thats what annoys me about his having left the show
So on the US show, where the track is different and the lap times aren't compared to the UK show's in anyway, whoever The Stig is doesn't really matter so long as it is the same person? Sounds to me like your issue is more that you are mad about The Stig changing on the UK show. Ben Collins didn't openly choose to leave, although he had to know that his actions would result in his being fired. Blame Ben Collins for this issue and leave the US Top Gear out of it. The timing doesn't work right for him to be the US Stig between his lawsuit and his races in the LMS.whether he is the one on the US version i dont know and i must admit i just assumed it, but really the racer isnt important its just having the same racer all the time which is important i reckon
But the Top Gear guys don't hate Fifth Gear, they even brought Tiff in as a replacement Stig of sorts. They hate Collins because he outer himself despite being under contract and ruining the whole mystery of who the Stig is/was.
I've decided to do the same thing to TG US that I did (inadvertently) to TG UK: not watch the first few seasons and then start watching when it gets good.
BBC is making this show under their BBC America (or is it BBC Worldwide?) production company. The same one that makes the US copies of crappy game shows. No one bought anything except the right to be the channel to broadcast the show. Most of the creative team behind this version have worked on the UK version and are BBC employees.
BBC is paid for by British television licencing fees. Therefore can you imagine a scenario where the BBC would spend money producing a show for an American network? The director of the new US version and his company are American, so I take it you know all of the so called British crew personally?
Fifth Gear never took off? For 18 series, 16 before cancellation rumors? Eight years is pretty good for a TV show by American standards.
OK allow me to rephrase - it was a terrible show imo. Happier now?
Not all Americans have legal access to all but two or three series. That is why this show was made.
OK well given how i wouldnt know that, what your saying is if i had you'd have saved yourself the embarassment of showing us your aggro side.
And did you ever think that this is Top Gear with American TV styling? I know a lot of Americans that think the British programming is crap because "The English have a horrible sense of humor that doesn't make any sense."
You say this as though I don't already know, which is amusing cus its pretty well known that Americans rarely get British humor. When Jay Leno was asked to host the show he himself said that an American version simply wouldnt work because American media is all corporate owned whereas BBC isnt so they can get away with saying things you couldnt in America - he was partly right, but its not just the BBC it is the whole of Europe, Australia and Canada - when you watch TV in the UK every night you see people mocking the PM in the worst possible ways and its great its called freedom of speech, something the US seems to find a threat.
In the US however you treat your ruler like an emperor. You have to address him as "Mr President" lmfao, and if you ever criticise your government you're 'unamerican' or 'unpatriotic' or worse. The Dixie Chicks had death threats and it basically ruined their career.
So please before you begin your next racist rant against our teeth or some such thing, please reconsider as there is no point acting like a child simply because you dont like or agree with something Ive posted.
you know he was in the middle of a lawsuit with the BBC when the American episodes were being filmed, right?
What is this even supposed to mean exactly? A lawsuit is when two parties differ on something. The way you wrote that it almost sounded like you were saying he's the 'bad guy'. I am not mad at Collins i was wrong about a lot of things and it seems he's actually been unfairly treated by TGUK in my eyes.
Fortunately for History Channel, this show was never intended for you to watch and you won't hurt their ratings.
Have my posts really horrified you so much I've managed to reveal your organ inferiority to the entire forum? If you're unsure on the term it is an Adlerian concept not a snide, uncalled for insult. I guess I dont have as much hate in me as you, so congrats pal you win!
Besides, getting to educate an American such as yourself on world history would be quite amusing and definitely something Id be up for. PM me when you're ready to switch off HC and pick up a book, or a globe (a spherical atlas btw, oh and an atlas is kind of like a map of the places beyond US borders, you should be able to pick one up locally im sure).
What show went that route? I have seen it go UK Show -> American Show and American Show -> UK Show, but never back and forth for the same show like that. Not that I would put it past Simon Cowell though.
Coupling was the British equivalent of Friends - a blatant ripoff and eveyone who saw it knows that. Then it gets replicated in the US practically word for word. And not that it matters but Im getting rather sick of US networks having to steal our TV shows, actors and directors. I would imagine you havent even noticed the influx of British actors on American TV? Many liberal Americans today are ashamed to call themselves Americans after the events of the last decade and Brit-fever has hit your shores whether you see it or not.
No cross-country show trading is needed. We have or have had three (or four?) CSIs, four Law & Orders and two Dragnets (which Law & order was based on). And every single sitcom featuring a married couple as the main characters has dumb, fat husband with hot, smart wife. If you think we will see this in the future I am guessing you are young.
If those words really just came about of your brain then i am guessing you are a bit thick lol. Maybe you'll want to take another look at what I actually said before you again demonstrate your organ inferiority in plain view of all readers to this page.
If I was young Id be very offended by that remark, but fortunately Im old enough and wise enough to instead be intrigued by the way you use the word 'young' as a derogatory term - again I wouldnt be a good human being if I didnt at least ask you to look that up because its an Adlerian concept in psychology which you have managed to demonstrate (now) 3 times so far in your post lol.
Well, he did violate a contract and get fired. By the way, he didn't leave, they fired him.
Well I guess you've just gone and disproved Socrates, the father of political philosophy, when he said "All i know is that i know nothing at all", because you clearly do seem to have a God-like ability to know all.
Sorry pal but Im going to have to disagree - Id in fact say he went well out of his way to disguise his identity for the show for years and his dismissal from the BBC was wrongful; hence the lawsuit you referred to earlier.
Where were you when black Stig left? Age alone would have likely necessitated a new Stig by now.
Good point amigo, maybe you should have started with this you super-smart fella, you
Blame Ben Collins for this issue and leave the US Top Gear out of it. The timing doesn't work right for him to be the US Stig between his lawsuit and his races in the LMS.
Please dont tell me this whole angry tirade at me was because you think Im criticising the US TG?!? All I ever said is it isnt as good as the UK version. And it isnt. And if it ever is it certainly wont be for a while. Im allowed to say this because I 'get' British humor and you don't like it so you are allowed to say the opposite but when you begin attacking the one aspect of our culture im actually rather proud of - our dark, dry humour - I just had to respond in kind because I think someone of your stature on this forum should perhaps behave with a little more sense and hold back your American super-patriotism so that it doesnt offend people and doesnt make your overcompensations so obvious to the world.
Wow. Oh wow. Please don't hold back on my account, say what's really on your mind
Perhaps you should read some of his posts?
Mostly in this section?
We don't "get" British humor because it's just that, British humor. It deals with things revolving around England, I wouldn't expect you to get American comedy as it deals with stuff that is relevant here.
And the whole "Mr. President" thing is called a formality and is in good manners, I'm guessing you wouldn't just walk up and call David Cameron, David Cameron, I'm guessing the formal saying is "Prime Minister Cameron" and during press briefings it's probably "Mr. Prime Minister".
The US version of Top Gear is produced by BBC Worldwide which is owned and operated by BBC. The director
Anyways, I wish History would re-air this weeks episode more, seems like whenever it's listed it's from previous weeks.
Having recently learned from the killer of fools that BBC America is not freely available to all the US, and that some Top Gear UK series were never aired for most of those people, it definitely makes sense for the BBC to want to get Top Gear onto US screens - all I am disputing is that I cannot believe without seeing with my own eyes that the publicly funded (yet fees are a legal requirement for all TV users) British Broadcasting Corporation would ever get away with spending British licence payer fees to fund a show for another country which we wont even benefit from at all.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1657260/fullcredits#cast
Here you'll see a few names listed as consulting producers. Perhaps these are the Brits you refer to, maybe even as you say the director, but the men putting up the money could not possibly be spending BBC funds on that (imo).
BBC WorldwideWHO WE ARE
BBC Worldwide is the commercial arm and a wholly owned subsidiary of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). We exist to maximise the value of the BBC's assets for the benefit of the licence fee payer by creating, acquiring, developing and exploiting media content and brands around the world. We also focus on creating value from BBC content and showcasing British talent both in the UK and international markets.
In the past five years the company has invested over £1bn in the UK's creative sector making it a major supporter for this increasingly important part of the 'UK plc'. We also sells programmes and formats produced by more than 500 different UK independent producers.
In 2009/10 the company saw sales rise by 7% to £1074m - exceeding the £1bn mark for a second year.
In April 2009, the company was awarded the Queen's Award for Enterprise recognising the company's substantial growth in earnings over the past three years.
BBC Worldwide operates under the BBC Charter and Agreement, which sets out the following four commercial criteria with which our activities must comply. BBC Worldwide must:
- Fit with the BBC's Public Purposes as set out in the Charter;
- Be commercially efficient;
- Not jeopardise the good reputation of the BBC or the value of the BBC brand;
- Comply with the BBC's Fair Trading Guidelines and avoid distorting the market
Now that there's multicultural stigs, can we now use stig as an adjective?
Like it or not, your TV license fees support the company that sells TV worldwide. But in turn they reinvest it in programming for Brits. It's still a company, they still want to make money.
Usually the episodes are available online. However, it looks like the only episode they have online right now is the Fast in Florida episode from two weeks ago. Odd.JustinAnyways, I wish History would re-air this weeks episode more, seems like whenever it's listed it's from previous weeks.
No response. I realize when my tone was misunderstood (yay Internet) and it is best to walk away to avoid any further personal insults.PS. Sorry to OP for going offtopic with this one. Barring any potential response from FoolKiller, the threads all yours again mate.![]()
I made no original racist rant.So please before you begin your next racist rant
I am sorry to hear about this, and truly saddened that we got off on the wrong foot. As you probably know, based on your comments, in the relatively near future (hopefully) I will be on medicines that will compromise my immune system and I would have enjoyed being able to talk with someone that has experience living life under those conditions.if I wasnt housebound with an auto-immune disorder
