On Wednesday 31st March 2021, Caterham Cars Ltd was acquired by leading, Japan-headquartered automotive group, VT Holdings, from businessmen Tony Fernandes and Kamarudin Meranun.

This marks an exciting moment in Caterham’s history as VT Holdings, who has assumed custodianship of our legendary British brand, already has close connections to Caterham Cars. Since 2009, they’ve operated as the official Japanese importer for the Seven, where it currently sells over 120 cars annually.

As one of Japan’s largest retailer groups - with over 200 showrooms nationwide and investments in UK, Spain, Thailand and South Africa - VT Holdings is also the importer for a collection of two and four-wheeled British brands, including Royal Enfield and Lotus in its home market.

In the remote chance Caterham are even on PD's radar: As always, it'll come down to how much PD want to be paid. However, maybe this frees up Caterham licencing issues. As a side bar, maybe VT Holdings can influence a return for Lotus too.

Even if Caterham did return in GT7 - and I do hope it does - I'm not sure what models should be added. There don't seem to be too many that aren't just variants of the Seven. I suppose they could add the SP/300.R, and then maybe the 21, too, but aside from that and a variant of the Seven, I think that'd be about it. I think just one iteration of the Seven should suffice.

On that subject, I want to say that the Fireblade could be a good variant to include, but that also feels a bit too predictable. Why not replace the Fireblade with a potentially newer iteration of the Seven? Like the Superlight R500.

Correct me if I’m wrong but I recall that Caterham wasn’t and isn’t related to Lotus in any way; they just bought the rights to the Lotus 7 chassis, which rules out issues with Lotus.

Also with Caterhams in other racing games I suppose Catherham’s absense in GT Sport is a design choice by Polyphony, not because of licensing.

So the best answer is...

Nothing to correct you for. The article relates VT Holdings to importing Lotus. It is why I'm only saying maybe. That's the point of bringing up this thought in question form. Because, obviously, I don't know.

Come to think of it, why include Caterham at all when PD could just include an iteration of the Lotus Seven? I mean, aren't almost all Caterham models sans the SP/300.R just modded Lotus Sevens? I get that there's been tons of changes made to the Seven when it comes to Caterham, but I'd be fine if we just got a Lotus Seven in lieu of Caterham as a whole.

Besides, I'd really only want Caterham if we get more than just one of their Sevens, like if we got the SP/300.R as well. (Though being track-only, the SP/300.R would likely go into Gr.X.) Otherwise, I don't see the inclusion of Caterham doing much compared to just adding a Lotus Seven. Especially if we get pretty in-depth customization options for it, like some of the cars in GT6.

And who owns the rights to the Lotus Seven?

Catherham bought the rights from Lotus in the 70's after Lotus ended production of the Seven, they've retained ownership of the name, image and parts since.
Then I hope that if Caterham returns, we'll at least get one iteration of the Caterham Seven, as well as the SP/300.R, even if the latter does end up in Gr.X as a track-only car.

I know there are many past cars that haven't been in GTS, but we got a specialised semi"open wheeler", like the X-Bow. Including the Honda 2&4.
Maybe it's just not been the right time to include certain makes.

This article is just car news, but the way the world has changed and the way business is being done, brands are looking at virtual motorsports to trace enthusiasts. I don't think 120 cars a year, is minute for such a brand. Whether Caterham could use the extra exposure in a virtual racing game or not(such as Glickenhaus), it's a possible option/platform to reach potentially new/future buyers.

Caterham have tried in the past to do something other than a '7' with the Caterham 21 - but that was little more than a 7 with a more conventional covered wheel body and therefore a good chunk heavier without really being any more practical. There wasn't a market for a heavier, slower, more expensive '7' so they sold less than 50 of them over a 5 year period.

Unless it's spectacularly pretty, i'm not sure largely the same recipe will be any more sucessful this time round.

I'd prefer anything else on the Datamined list first.

Did I just respond to a two year old thread with 15 replies?
