This is in response to the F1 related, "Can Vettel/Schumacher win a race this year?" threads.

So the question is, will Jeff Gordon win a race in 2012? We know that he has been suffering this year, mainly due to unfortunate luck. So far he has posted only 1 top 5 finish (Texas). When, if so, would Jeff Gordon win a race this year? My bet is that he wins 2 races maximum, one win at Infineon and the other at Indy.

What do you think about Jeff Gordon's chances this year?

EDIT (7/9/12): As of now, there are 8 races left until the start of The Chase. These tracks are, New Hampshire, Indianapolis, Pocono, Watkins Glen, Michigan, Bristol, Atlanta, and Richmond. Of these 8 tracks, Jeff is best at New Hampshire and Atlanta.

Now, along with if he can win at least one race, can Jeff Gordon make The Chase for the Cup? Things are looking worse and worse every weekend.

Nope, I've lost all faith in him after the wreck at Dega. No Fifth Championship this year either! Remember if you want to take home the title, you gotta make the chase first!

Sure he can. He has fast cars almost every week. He just gets involved in wrecks or has issues with his cars. He'll come to a race with a good car, and not be involved in some mess, and get a victory. I don't thing he'll make the chase, but a victory is inevitable.

What he said. ^^^ he has very good equipment and fast cars. A almost won 3 races last year. Don't forget that he's getting old. He also said he's hungrier than ever for wins because he knows his retirement is coming up fast. So yes I think he can win a race this season.

He just needs to qualify up front and have Steven Wallace behind him to take out the rest of the field:idea:
Buy the way I'm a Gordon fan have been ever since he told Junior Johnson he didn't want to drive his Fords.

And as soon as he has a good race, you'll be back on his bandwagon yet again.

Exactly. Remember, he would/should have won at Martinsville earlier in the year if not for Clint Bowyer wrecking him and the #48 on the last re-start. Surely his bad luck will run out eventually.

Yes he can (didn't he nearly win at Martinsville?).

Yes. That was very lame. He was so close, and bowyer drove up through the pack like an idiot. But Jeff gave him some payback coming out of Turn 2.

Gordon can win this year. Will he? Time will tell. And I for one will never abandon rooting for him (I don't have backup drivers because Gordon is my driver).

Wasn't it about this time last year people were doubting Tony Stewart's chances of even making the chase?

Jeff just needs to shake the bad luck. He's got a great team, great cars, and he knows his way around all the tracks. He will win again if he can get luck on his side.

I updated the OP. Now the questions are, will Jeff Gordon win a race, and will he make The Chase. Will he?

First he needs to know that NASCARs are heavy and don't touch the cones.

We need to hit up his twitter with the GT5 screen caps and tell him to not touch the cones! Maybe it'll give him some luck!

The difference is, though, that this time last year we were only worried about Stewart getting a win. He wasn't suffering back in the points and it was obvious that he had the capabilities to contend for the Chase, but he needed those wins.

Jeff on the other hand is suffering from loads of bad luck on top of not winning.

The poll question and the title question are completely different. Can and Will changes the answer for me.

Can he get a win this year? Yes. He has the equipment.
Will he get a win this year? I'm leaning towards 'highly-unlikely'. The competition is VERY Strong this year. But hey! Khane and Logano both beat the odds, so anything is possible.
