Will the GT8 be the last GT ever?

I always read complaints about the new cars introduced with the monthly updates in GT7.
Some people wants to see only latest race cars and other the most modern cars.

I have the impression that the majority of those will be released only in GT8 because, after that, the new cars that could be introduced will be almost only electric or hybrid... and the pure gasoline soul cars will be disappeared...

Moreover we will only get cars from the past because those had a personality, those cars have build the identity of the brands, some of them are the icon of car industry.
Now we are moving to insignificant cars, just good enough to "move" people from A to B with no emotions.
Even the most powerful electric cars are not capable to deliver the emotions of the iconic fuel car of the past.

So, I don't expect generous updates in GT7 because the latest and acceptable modern cars close to GT spirit will be left for GT8 and, unfortunately, this will be the last chapter of GT. 😔

I don't know if you're keeping up on industry news at all, but along with a lot of territories walking back impending legislation on pure-ICE new car bans, a lot of manufacturers are revisiting the idea too. Only this week Audi announced it was reversing its decision to phase out ICE by 2033. Additionally, low-volume manufacturers (which includes brands like Aston Martin) have remained exempt from large parts of the legislation on the matter, and motorsport keeps on kicking the EV can down the road - WRC moved away from hybrids this season.

We're looking at no sooner than 2035-2040 for a phase shift from all-ICE to hybrid in Europe, never mind the USA where the executive branch thinks EVs, even the "it's all computer" ones, are stupid cars for weenies. And they're not even the largest car markets in the world. 2035 is more than two Gran Turismo games away (if you don't think Sport was one; if you do then it's three GT games away), and even then GT rarely adds cars newer than a year old - so there's still at least three titles left with recent "pure gasoline soul cars".


A better question is if GT7 will be the last GT game.

Yamauchi is pretty well-off and 57 years old. He keeps making games because he keeps wanting to get his vision across - and that vision isn't necessarily always cars; he keeps on talking about simulating the world itself - yet, according to self-proclaimed fans, every game is the worst game ever and every update is the worst update ever, and he's stupid and dumb and disconnected and doesn't know anything about cars or fans and "we" want this and "we" want that, and he literally can't post anything anywhere on social media without being deluged with "give us new GT3s", "give us hypercars", and what amounts to "stop being lazy and having fun and go back to making our game".

At some point his desire to make games is going to give way to getting zarked off with entitled babies crying about this that and the other everywhere, and he'll go enjoy a nice retirement somewhere remote with his family and car collection. No Yamauchi more or less means no Gran Turismo; unless he has a successor lined up or they can find someone else who both grasps what the goals are and can say "no" to the management above him (and even Yamauchi doesn't always get his own way), post-KY GT will just sink into the same-as-all-the-other racing games mire with no distinct identity.

Of course, for those who only care about buying a game with GT on the cover for some inane territorial reason, that's fine.

Huge investments have been already done and the latest cars have a framework structured to accept only the electric engine and modify those for introducing an ICE engine will be extremely expensive.
Moreover some gasoline engine were not developed further to respect the new regulations having in mind to switch to electric, so those engine are not usable and develop and improve those engines will be expensive too.
It is like a oil tanker, to change the course you need miles and miles and you cannot stop in the meanwhile what is going to happen...

Honestly on this last part I have never thought and you spot on a relevant aspect.

Even if a substitute is already shadowing Yamauchi doesn't mean that will keep the same spirit alive.
I can also speculate that Yamauchi could consider GT as his own creature and could shut down with him (as the child is the ball owner and go home with the ball).

I am really passionate of cars, I grew driving some crazy cars and what I see around me is more and more far from my passion.
I need soon to change my daily car and I am struggling in finding something interesting... so my pessimism would have influenced my writing above...

The answer to this depends entirely on how much Sony wants to roll the franchise into the dessicated remains of their GaaS initiative. If that is to become the main future of the franchise, I can see the answer being "one game per console generation maybe".


If the franchise remains in the quasi-middle ground state that it is in now between what it used to be and a GaaS title, then yes they'll make more in their typical output.

Just to add to the back half of my post above, that's not to say that there are no valid criticisms of GT and no good way to make them - of course there are - or even that doing so by engaging on social media is bad (it's not), but whenever the guy posts anything on social media you can predict the responses.

If it's anything update-related, 90% are almost evenly split between negative comments about the update and car requests, and the rest are insults or sucking up. If it's not update-related, it's a straight coin-toss if it's unrelated negative comments about updates generally, car requests, insults, or sucking up.

Given that he has wealth and family, and has arguably achieved what he wanted to (attested by a wide industry reputation), I simply wonder how much longer he's willing to put up with it all.

Most big brands have been hedging, because the legislation was insane - particularly after years of chasing, missing, and being fined for not hitting emissions targets in Euro III-VI and now the upcoming Euro VII - and they've been spending a lot of time and money lobbying to get exemptions and extensions.

Low-volume brands have been harder hit (most relying on engines from parent marques or other suppliers) but even so they've always been subject to different rules on that front, with extensions carved out.

The problem hasn't been brands putting their weight behind hybrids/EVs and going for it but the uncertainty of it all.

You don't consider Sport to be a GT game? GT6 to Sport was just under four years, and Sport to 7 was just over four years. And yes, PS3 was a nightmare which is part of why it took six years from GT4 to GT5. Across its lifetime, a new, full-price GT game has arrived every 3.5 years.

The reasons for time between games in a series now is primarily fiscal, not logistical. Rockstar could have given us three GTA games since 2013, but has instead remastered GTA5 twice because...

... there's no financial incentive to do so when the old one is still selling so well. And that's probably driven by Shark Card MTX, which is money for literally nothing.

GT Sport's "monthly" updates didn't really stop until sales and - importantly - retained player numbers started to fall off. They needed to focus on the new game to get something new out to bring players back only when players started to drift away beyond a certain minimum level. I can only imagine that'll be the case with GT7 and any subsequent titles too, though I don't have any figures on how it's doing on either front...

Nonetheless, if there is a GT8 (and we know that they have been developing one, but that's quite different from releasing one; SIE's been badly burned by some shocking failures recently) it's going to have given way to a putative GT9 long before ICE bans eliminate "pure gasoline soul cars".

As for being enveloped by Chinese marques, it hasn't caused too much of an issue at Lotus, Volvo/Polestar, or MG. Other than ZHG seemingly realising that overpowered, heavy EVs are not really what Lotus customers want after making a 1000hp SUV and a 2000hp hypercar and crapping itself.

I mean, recently Kaz has announced the partnership with Xiaomi that it is an electric car brand.
He is preparing the next step were more and more new brands will arrive and those will be just electric cars.
Moving in that direction I feel to loose the "Gran Turismo" effect, where I remember GT represent a specific type of car that I deeply doubt an electric car could replicate.

Most probably I am wrong, but GT9 will be full of Porsche Mission X (ugly to drive), or Skoda Vision Gran Turismo (ugly to drive) or many other Vision GT cars (that often are unpleasant to drive).
It will remember me a game like Wipeout, were these "amazing" cars can almost fly on the track... but very far from the Grant Turismo feeling...

There was a time where cars were recognizable for their design immediately and the respective driving experience were also peculiar.
Nowadays you can put together several cars and couldn't identify if German or Korean...

With car producers so focused on costs, the cars of the future will be very similar each other with performance that will be identical served by the "same" engine.

I wouldn’t call it speculation, I think OP’s observations are directly related to the industry trends and Famine and others mentioned.

Currently the entire industry is learning a strong lesson, strong enough that they’re forcing governments to walk back EV regulations. Oddly enough, while the US government is walking back due to political reasons, it’s the high-end European brands struggling the most with EV demand versus their brand identities, Ferrari and Porsche being the standouts. Ferrari has now admitted they have no demand for EVs, and despite Porsche being European their biggest market in the US is forcing them to change plans because nobody wants an EV Porsche either.

GT’s content for the most part relies on what decisions the industry has already made so historically it has always reflected its era. That said, I do believe that it’s possible for GT to take that too far, and for it to actually lose popularity due to including content which is unpopular in the market. I think there will be a time when GT has to decide between adding a newly developed EV or adding an old and worn out Caldina.

They’re experimenting right now by adding several CUVs which are reflective of their era but they’ll be gathering data on car usage and in the long run I think it’ll become clear that fans just aren’t very interested in arguably the least cool and interesting era of cars in history.

GT has become inclusive of all of automotive culture so they need to balance that properly without alienating fans. Becoming too saturated with CUVs and EVs is an actual business decision PD is going to have to make or risk their own security exactly like what car makers are dealing with right now.

As for game relevancy, I bet GT7 will continue for up to another five years before GT8 debuts some time after the PS6 arrives. The good news is GT7 assets are such high quality that increasing processing power and advanced lighting will go far to making GT8 have its own personality. The only real question is how much fans care about the cars they decide to include.

Yep! No different than paying $90 for GT8. Which we all know is going to be pretty much GT7 anyway, but slightly upgraded.

I have a pet peeve with game developers, Call of Duty releases so many new games year, and all you’re really getting is new maps. They all feel pretty much the same, but then you’re stuck with a bunch of different games on your system, when I’d much prefer just getting new maps. Some care about the different movement physics, I really don’t care.

I’d be perfectly fine paying for dlc to prolong the life of GT7, and it gives them a chance to really round out the game with lots of different tracks and track environments. A lot of car classes we have just one of this or one of that, they could fix that too. If we don’t get that, then we’ll be switching between GT7 and GT8 to race on tracks that aren’t in both games and drive cars that aren’t in both games. Ran into this when I shifted from GT5 to GT6. Hey they don’t have this car, or that track. Bummer… I’d rather pay another $90 in dlc content (tracks and cars) to get a lot more out of GT7 than have GT7 fizzle out as it is and wait for GT8. They could introduce other things too in free updates, such as tune sharing, but that’s en entirely different topic.

A lot of my friends and I were into cars growing up, our friendships were built around that. I talk to a lot of younger people daily and I’d say 10% are into cars. Back in my day, we pretty much all were, even if you weren’t haha. So yeah, there is a lack of character in new stuff, it’s a point A to point B type of thing, I think a lot of people just don’t care what they’re driving. It’s about as important to them as the fork in their utensils drawer. Important, yes, but more of a must have, they don’t put the fork into the drawer, close it, then open it again to get a last look at the fork before they have to use it again. Always look back at it after you park. Haha

Adding cars and tracks without addressing the fact there's few curated events that include them misses the game's main issues. It enhances the toybox for making your own events/online races (which have their own issues) but doesn't enhance the game itself.

And again, cars (and tracks) are more or less coming when they are ready. There's not a secret additional pipeline that's making cars (and tracks) and holding them back for kicks. "Prolonging" GT7's lifetime, or wanting to pay for DLC (exclusivity, somewhat against PD's ethos but very much in SIE's playbook), won't affect that. The outcome is three-ish cars a month-ish whether you want that to be kept away from players without an additional fee or not.

Admittedly a very basic measurement, but checking various regional PS Stores the game is around 30-40th on the best selling page (around 50th in the US). I think those pages refresh monthly so a reasonable showing for a 3 year old game that's not usually on sale, and it is ahead of several newer & high profile releases.

Given the issues with other first party studios I'd think Playstation and Sony are pretty happy with PD. There are (finally) a few first party releases planned for the next couple of years, so I don't think there's any rush for GT8 (and this theoretical end of the franchise).

Speaking of player numbers falling off, I've been wondering what would bring me back to it besides having a shorter to-do list. A spec 3 update with proper endurance races, B-spec, and more content would be a good start and would offer a bump, especially if they change the look and feel of the game a bit.

There are people that legitly thinl a person than has deliver 9 chapters (most of them sucessful) of a popular franchise now has no idea on how to design a gmae because is missing the GT3 and LMH line-up.

GT7 has flaws (as every game out there) but harrasing and making despective comments is not going to bring improvements on the next game (GT8 or GT sport 2 or as PD wants to name it).

It is obvious that Kaz knows the current GT3 and LMH lineup, but if they are not in the game is not because he is an ignorant game producer, specially when thanks to his initial work was the foundation and inspiration for other racings (I hate the term simcade so for me, anything that is not an arcade is a sim)

I don't think GT8 will be the last game on the franchise, but probably will be the last lead by Kaz, and as a GT fan since the first game my main concern would be than a new producer can try to let down the GT esence to try to become the franchise in another GT3 simulator.

I think a ton of people complaining about gt7 are gt fans since the first game(s) and everyone of them thinks they know what the "gt essence" is (including me ) and that Kaz is doing already something (totally) different...

Translation to english:

-User: "and the Kaz picture?" (Original post was using an Audi R18 for a school homework presentation)

-Spanish influencer: "on the homework of lazy people than don't know how to do games"

-User: "He only knows about travel, be famous and post silhouettes"


There are people that legitly thinl a person than has deliver 9 chapters (most of them sucessful) of a popular franchise now has no idea on how to design a gmae because is missing the GT3 and LMH line-up.

GT7 has flaws (as every game out there) but harrasing and making despective comments is not going to bring improvements on the next game (GT8 or GT sport 2 or as PD wants to name it).

It is obvious that Kaz knows the current GT3 and LMH lineup, but if they are not in the game is not because he is an ignorant game producer, specially when thanks to his initial work was the foundation and inspiration for other racings (I hate the term simcade so for me, anything that is not an arcade is a sim)

I don't think GT8 will be the last game on the franchise, but probably will be the last lead by Kaz, and as a GT fan since the first game my main concern would be than a new producer can try to let down the GT esence to try to become the franchise in another GT3 simulator.

He’s probably learned to just brush it off, like those celebrities read mean tweets stuff. Take the insults and diffuses any power they had.

I mean it says something about the game if people are that passionate about it. If the game sucked, it would be crickets on there. I don’t talk about my least favourite games with other people, anywhere, at any time. Those garbage games don’t get my time.

I’ve been a long time GT fan, it’s always been lacking in one way or another for me. I’ve probably been on this forum many many years ago posting wishlists and what not for GT5 or GT6 and even what GT7 should include.

I preordered GT7, I had felt burnt by GT6 so I was really unsure but took a chance. First impression was, meh, same old game, physics are a better I guess, and the sounds. Then I got surprised by the livery editor, wow is that a nice feature. Then they did physic updates and it got even better. Now it’s finally sorted, besides some FFB stuff. But they of course removed tune sharing, no track editor, can’t gift cars.

IF there is a GT8, and I think there will be, I really do hope they knock it out of the park, read some forums, sift through it all and consider everyone’s critiques and complaints, no matter how rude some comments might be or seem. Essentially searching for their weaknesses and address them while staying true to what Gran Turismo is, include all your museum stuff and info on the cars (I don’t really bother with that stuff) but it’s part of gran turismo, it has to stay.

A long time ago, I said why are first person shooter campaigns always single player? This would be much more enjoyable with a friend. What do you know it finally found its way into the games. I also feel the same way with GT7. I would love to race championships with a friend or two. But for some reason, we can’t race against AI with friends. To me that’s a weakness that can be addressed. Anyway, it’s such a good game, it also leaves you wanting more which can lead to feeling disappointed with it simultaneously because it becomes what it could have been.
