As you know my attempt to get an xp home cd from HP failed. Can I take the xp 'pro' cd that I used on my gaming rig and pop it in the HP and format? Since this computer will be handed over to a family member, Dont I need a xp "home" cd to format since this computer already has home edition installed on it? My only choice is to take the xp pro and reformat it from that. Thanks for your help 👍

Oooh, that's an interesting question. I assume that the machine has a license key with it, as in you don't actually key the key, it gets it from the motherboard? If so, I believe the Home and Pro keys are seperate. One way to find out would be to throw the disk in, boot from it, and and see what it says. Unless you're ready to jump in I wouldn't format the disk. Just see if it gives you any errors or gripes about what you're trying to do.

Yeah i'll try that, but first I have to get the gaming rig up and running then I can play around with the HP and see what it will do. Thanks.

It will work.

Thats what I did with my HP Laptop. It came with XP Home and whenever I reformat I just do it off the XP Professional CD and directly install XP Pro, rather than upgrading from Home.

The Professional CDs do not need to be 'activated' like the Home ones do, so you can install it on however many computers you want. My Laptop doesn't that embedded key technology that LoudMusic was talking about, so I just type in my Pro CD Key.

XP Pro is licensed for two machines.

I've used my CD on 4 separate machines.

edit:
Er .. It might be that I have the academic license version which I do believe is unlimited.

Thanks guys. Is it simple like I just pop in the cd and a screen comes up and I hit format? Its pretty straight forward right?

Fairly ... you have to boot from the CD "to do it right", which to me includes formatting. You may have to hop into the bios and set the CD as the first boot device.

You mean the XP Pro Corporate discs do not need activation. There's two types of CD keys MIcrosoft offer, the standard ones and volume licenses. These volume licenses (also known as corporate keys) do not need activation and are only really used in big enterprises where a copy is installed on a heap of computers...

Yeah I have the standard one. So I can only use it on this HP and my gaming rig and thats it?!?! Cant I install it on other computers I build in the future?

Ah ok. That would explain it. I knew VT got some sort of mass distrobution license for XP Pro, but I wasn't sure of the specifics and what not.
