But just out of interest, people complain about the PS3 being expensive. How much will it cost to make a PC thta can run Vista? If I wanted to get a PC from scratch which is capable of running Vista (whenever it comes out) and have the games running on it, what am I looking at price wise?
Seeing how Vista will cost $400 by itself, and if you build your own PC, maybe $1000 - $1200.

Interesting, it will cost that much to play Halo2 for pc(Vista/DX10 only game)
You could also probably wait 9 months for Halo 3, and get it for $450, with better graphics, etc, or you can get the normal Xbox with Halo 2 for about $200.

Yes, simple logic :)

Get a PS3 by giving away your PC.

Use the money you would buy a PS3 with buying a new computer for less money than the PS3.

You have change.

I really doubt that I could build a quality 3ghz+ PC for less than $700. I want quiet components with excellent cooling. I also want a snazzy lightweight case to go with it, not some oogly box with a wimpy noisy power supply that costs $39.

I think I'll check out Newegg again to see just how far the dollars would have to go to get the PC I want.

No. My laptop serves me well. Ps3 will be the house's "desktop", though.

No way thats crazy!!

I can see myself using my PS3 more than my PC. With a few exceptions all I need my PC for is web browsing. Depending on the PS3's web browsing abilities (and I'm not expecting too much) I might not even use my PC for browsing. Letter writing and email will still be on my PC, but quite possibly that'll be it.

Exactly, why anyone would do it is beyond me. Even if your PC is crap, it's still better for web browsing, image editing, word processing etc.

I saw a funny topic about saving with school tax write-off by getting a PS3 for college?

Would that be fun if the gouvernment allow us to make saving due that you go to school & need a new pc.

lol, hardly likely, but if it did word processing, email, etc, then I'm sure you could probably pull it off.

It just depends on how it's "classified" as a consumer end product. Should it come out that the government see's fit to classify it as a "computer" then sure, it's definately possible.

I think our government did classify the PS3 as a computer and gave it an extra tax. Therefore, students can deduct the cost of a PS3. A computer is a computer.

I voted no because ive been adding alot of new kit to my computer reciently and Im not gonna give it all up for a machine which will probably make my body waste away as I sit in front of the TV for the next 6 years..... plus with no microsoft word and Pro Enginner I would probably fail university!

Im still going to buy one though....... tee hee hee.....

no because no matter how good the web browsing may be i still preffer to use the computer plus im going to be starting college soon and so i will need microsoft word etc.

If you can build a computer that has similar specs to the PS3 and is capable of the same functions for under $500, I will pay for you to do it.

That's not his point. George doesn't want a PS3, so he'll sell it for some easy cash.

His point was that he'll build a computer for less than the cost of a PS3. Honestly, a computer under $500 isn't going to do much for anyone, visually or performance wise. At that point is becomes a word processor and an internet surfer.

Sure, he'll be able to play games from 1999 on it, but nothing amazing.

Just wanted to point that out. I'm not questioning his wants or needs, just his comments that he'll buy a PS3, sell it, and build a computer for "less than a PS3"...when obviously that's not going to net him any of the same features, functions, or performance.

That was a rather silly post. I keep thinking of doing one based on what it would cost to make a serious gaming machine armed just with a DVD drive for media. Maybe I should do that now since the topic is so fresh.

$65 case and PSU
$200 CPU and cooling fan (more like $280 for a 3.2ghz P4)
$75 nForce 4 motherboard
$80 1gig ram
$70 120gig hard drive (you'll need more drive space since you'll be INSTALLING games)
$45 16x dual layer DVD rom/writer
$175 GeForce 7600 GT 256meg video card
$10 disc drive
$35 keyboard and mouse
($30 controller)
$0 networking and sound (on motherboard)
$75 WinXP Home edition
TOTAL= $830

And that still won't equal what a PS3 will do. It might equal a 360 but I'm not even sure about that. For a 17" LCD monitor, add $180 ($1010).

And of course this doesn't include shipping or any taxes. :sly:

Since my current PC wont show pics from my HD video camera, work with my video equipment, work with my audio equipment, microphone, and has no VGA output for my new HDTV set, only has 40GB HDD space, breaks down constantly (blue screen of death), freezes up constantly (Ctrl Alt Dlt), media audio files and songs don't play correctly, runs slow for no reason at times, etc. I plan to get a new PC. There's no way around it, I think.

Recently, in this Sunday's ads, I've noticed some tempting offers for PCs, but I want to go Mac. I'm done with MS and their crap. But, Mac has no entry level, simple PC that'll work with what I have. I'd have to spend another $1,700 on something I know I'll just use to surf the internet and maybe show the occasional video pic or some home audio recording of my guitar playing. I cannot see myself spending that much for a computer I know I'll hardly use.

I really hope the PS3 can do what I want with it, but I seriously doubt it. Still, you never know...

I've been having similar problems with my hunk of crap...err I mean PC. I've decide that I still want to have one and along with a mate have decided to put one together. The parts are all fairly entry level. I'm not worrying about the graphics card yet. But all in all it's come to around £290 - that's an AMD Athlon 64 3500, Asus AM2 motherboard with nVidia chipset, 1024 RAM, 200GB HDD (5x bigger than my current one) and DVDR/RW. Very basic but enough to keep me going.
Nowhere near the PS3's abilities but almost the same price (if I bought it pre-assembled). But I'm going to use my PC for one thing and my PS3 for another, though I'm sure there'll be some cross over between the two.

Well, you could get a Mac Mini. The solo core is $600, with the dual core being $800, but you could probably get a refurbished one from Apple for $100 less. And if you have a kid in school, you might be able to buy an education iMac for $900 in his/her name... but use it yourself. :sly:
