Windows firewall help

Hi,I'm having problems with windows firewall on vista.
Anything that requires firewalls permission my computer seemingly freezes and I re-boot and I try again etc.
I've read that it might be to do with anti-virus software like norton.
I have norton but it expired a few weeks ago and I'm using avast currently.
I press continue from the prompt from firewall and that's when it freezes.

Did you completely remove Norton before installing Avast? Ugly things can happen when running two different AV/firewall programs at the same time.

When Norton expires, it is still active. It just doesn't update its virus database anymore. And gives you annoying popups saying it's expired.

Are you also running the Norton firewall?

I haven't removed norton and I'm pretty sure norton's firewall is on.
So I guess unistall norton and windows firewall is ok?

You may need to uninstall Avast first, then uninstall Norton and reinstall Avast, and don't skip reboots when it says it needs to. Multiple AVs at the same time will do very weird things.

Ok I'll do that.EDIT:I can't unistall norton because of windows firewall freezing my computer.

I can't unistall anything without windows firewalls permission.What should I do?
EDIT:I beginning to think I have a virus.
