RRoDzaaah!
I am having one hell of a time networking two computers together under Windows XP. Everything is fine, both computers are connected to the router, but for some reason the client computer is not able to connect. The computer I am on now (the server, I suppose) is able to connect to the Internet as usual, yet the client computer cannot see the network or connect to the Internet. Strangely enough, only Internet Explorer seems to connect to the Internet but, not Firefox or any other application.

So, I must be doing something wrong.

I run the Networking Wizard under XP and I still seem to mess it up somehow. Can someone direct me to a tutorial for how to setup a network under Windows XP? Google isn't my friend this morning.

How do you manage to mess it up?

It seems simple enough to me. Have you made sure that when you set it up on both, you put in exactly the same network name? I set up our laptops like that, only wirelessly, and i've never had any problems with it. Apart from sometimes, my mum's laptop can't connect while i am, but the network still apears, it just stays on "aquiring network address".

Yes, I did. I use "NETWORK" every time.

Not too sure how I messed it up. I think it is just one of those things. :)

Oh, how odd. Try using a different name :)

I suggest something like your surname. Ours is called ReayFamily2 (I got confused with the first one )

I was thinking that too, but i didn't know wether that would cause it not to show up or not. The only problems firewalls have caused me, was that the other laptop couldn't use my printer.

If it is only two XP installed computers, use one lan cat5 not a router, then use shares and Remote Desktop, both easily setup, for two they sort of like equity exchange(Remote desktop under XP is two computers from the One interface), servers like five or more beings.

Check the Network settings of the working machine, and duplicate that on the second machine. What are you trying to network between the two machines? You can also make sure File and Print Sharing are allowed. Also, make sure that both machines can access the internet, which is a nice test to see if IP addressing is good. Also check to see that both machines are on the same network, i.e. with IP address' for example 192.168.1.101 and 192.168.1.102. If there on the same subnet you should be good.

Just a couple of things you can check out.

Well, I found out what was causing the problem. It seems like Norton Firewall wouldn't let go of the client computer so easily. It was still running in the background even though I removed it from startup. I had to remove it completely, as if it was spyware. Everything works great now.

Kids, don't buy software firewalls.

:relieved:

I have a problem too, so i'll post it in this thread.

I have a wireless router at home, and two desktops. I want to be able to share files over the wireless network, but cannot get the computers to see eachother. I cannot ping from one computer to another, even though they both have ip addresses on the network.

Any help would be great.

Same deal as above. Make sure file sharing is turned on and that both computers are on the same network (name). Make sure both computers have access to the internet and that they're both connected to the same router.

It can be tricky, but once you have it set up it's really nice. Firewalls like zonealarm and norton can get in the way.
