Windows update issues?

I am trying to figure out why my computer was out of date but the updater won't allow me to do anything because it says it isn't running. Microsoft wanted $99 to fix it but during that time they said I was missing some files that were important.

It also seems my windows firewall/antivirus stuff is out of date too but having some issues.

Any help would be awesome.
 
I would start by running an sfc scan. Open a command prompt and type: sfc /scannow

Just did that even though I really don't know what it was supposed to do BUT this is what it said after.

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

When we were doing the tech stuff with Microsoft, he asked me if I saw 2 programs. Windows updater and something else in the systems file that you can pull up from start/search and neither were there.

Did they call and want you to use Logmein or some other remote access program?

I didn't get that far and told them I would try to fix it from my end. I was on their tech line online but I figured something can't be that hard overall if my computer didn't crash.

The reason why I was looking is sometimes Youtube is slow, and Netflix was out of sync. So I looked into that and saw that windows update was out of date, but wouldn't let me.
 
Oh yeah I didn't think of that.

Microsoft will NEVER contact you and offer to fix your computer for a fee.

If they call again, hang up and under NO CIRCUMSTANCES install anything they ask you to.

So you contacted them?

Are you using Windows XP or Windows 7?
 
XP is no longer supported for free and they will want to charge about $150(well in oz).

If you have issues back and and reinstall.
 
I have Windows 7.

I did contact them to just see if it was an easy fix.

Your best of reinstalling.

When you get messages back the windows update service not working, there are problems deep down.

Hmm...so I'm not sure I have a back up for my windows 7 software. I mean I can redownload things but some of the stuff sucks. I guess I will go buy a flash drive today and save alot of the pictures I have taken over the last year.
 
When it comes to backing up you just have to back up 1 folder.

C:\users\<profile name>

And that has all your email, photos, music, ect
Make sure you have the permissions to copy it all though.
 
If you go in to services.msc is the windows update service running? If not, can you start it?
 
Do you still have a windows 7 disk? It's probably worth doing a repair install.

I can't remember if it came with one but I will need to go looking. I guess that seems to be the best option which kind of sucks to do but if it will fix it.
 
This happened on my dad's computer a while back as well. No idea what causes it but the update service just disappeared at some point. The MS Fixit tool does not seem to notice it as you said. I did a lot of searching around online for solutions other than reinstalling windows and wasn't able to come up with much. Some people mentioned copying some relevant registry entries from a working system but I really don't know how well that would work out. Best to just back up all your stuff and reinstall I think.
 
Looks like I will attempt that this weekend if I can figure out how to reinstall it without a disk.
 
Couple things to try. One: Restarting the Windows Update Service.
Other thing to consider. A lot of computers these days have a recovery partition. If you have everything backed up, you can access the recovery partition by going through the proper boot menu options. I'd suggest logging onto the manufacturer's site and use their instructions.
