Windshield wipers and bad weather.

perhaps a weather forecast on the car radio. J/K But all this reminds me of this idea i had, you know the updating forecast of different tracks on GT5p home screen, well imagine there are events that have tracks working in real time with the weather of that track in real life, even if its night at nurburing, and daytime from where you are playing, I think it would be great but will only work in certain events, you wouldn't want to try and do a good time trial and have to wait for a sunny day first..

As longs as you can switch it on and off like the realtime time of day in Burnout Paradise... I always use this in BP.

Why would you need warning to approaching rain? You see rain drops on your windshield, you turn on the wipers... lol

besides, unless it flashes in giant red letters "RAIN" in the middle of your screen I doubt you'll even notice the warning.

Yeah, I still remember one of the test drive games aggggges ago. I'm thinking Test Drive 3 which was released 1990 (simply because I was playing it when I was about that old :p), but I can't remember exactly which one. ANYWAY! That had rain, and the rain would appear gradually, just a specs at first, then slowly getting heavier.

Hell, from memory, Test Drive 3 had weather, windscreen wipers, damage, day/night races, I can't remember if it had headlights though. And it did all that almost 20 years ago! Have PD been sleeping under a rock all this time? GT5 is like, 5 generations behind ;) :p

not necessarily true mate... There are many combination's you could use so this feature could be turned on or off the by the user..

True, but I dont think any developer wants to make it over complicated with button combinations just to turn on their headlights :p Its not like PC where you can assign headlights to H, windscreen wipers to W, pit lane limiter to L, traction control to T, etc.

EDIT: It was Test drive 3... check these screenshots out...

Welcome to the last century everyone, cockpit views, day/night, weather effects including snow and rain, working headlights, and random chickens crossing the road! All in 1990 :p Man, that brings back so many awesome memories.

The single most important feature missing in the GT series is random chickens crossing the road. Let's see MS beat that!

Yeah but let's not turn GT into Tekken. Automatic wipers would be perfect. When it rains, you'd want to have them turned on anyway, so why not let the game do it for you.

Warnings as in dark clouds. I didn't mean a written warning lol. I just wouldn't expect a sudden downpour on a sunny day, though it could happen. You know what I am saying? We'll probably know when it will rain in a race. The sky would tell a lot, and by that, we'd be warned. However, it may in fact, never rain (making us paranoid) in that race despite the dark clouds. Or maybe it will in the middle. Either way, the element of surprise would be great.
It's just the way you said it that made me guffaw for w while:

"(or with some warning), to prepare us to hit the button which engages the wipers" It makes me think you'll wait intently as dark clouds gather and lightning strikes the ground, silently you count down to your self: three... two... one... one... zero poi... ENGAGE THE WIPERS FULL POWERRRRRRRR. XD

Luckily for me, crashing into you doesn't take any skill at all. If you want to drive with your headlights off, fine, drive with them off. Don't complain if I crash into you for not seeing you ;) You can't blame me, after all. Want me not to accidentally crash against you? Drive with your headlights on, mate. It can happen in real life. And want me to tell you something? I bet I won't be the one to blame if both lose our cars on a race. IF the game allows for headlights to be turned on/off, it must be well modeled enough for me not to see you in night tracks if your headlights are off. How can you blame me for something that you initiated by driving with yoru headlights off? If there's nobody I can see by normal means on the game, with the use of many different cameras, then I have the right to drive wherever I want on the track. Don't bother getting in my way on night tracks.

How can you crash into me when I'm behind you with my headlight off? and you don't have to be a skilled driver to know that I'm next to you right :)? Because I'm sure you can hear my engine become louder as I'm getting closer to you, right? and of course I'll turn my headlight on after you give me enough room to pass. also just for you information I won't turn my headlights off at some random room full of people who I don't know off, because I know it will end in tears.

lolz. All in all, I am beginning to believe it would be auto. There is just so much to focus on in first person mode so it makes more sense to me to make it auto. If not, so be it.

AS much as realistic as it would having the wipers be manual, its completly not necessary and just addes more buttons, save those buttons for things like Headlight controls and high beams...

Idea: lights are turned on automatically by the game (if it gets dark or when it rains heavily) BUT you can turn them off again if you want (with a 'difficult' button combination).
That way inexperienced players don't go mumbling all about to find a way to turn their headlights on, and we can atleast see them in the rain/dark.

There, problem solved :)

Wouldn't be too big of a suprise to me, really.

*couple of droplets on the windscreen*

Oh, a couple of droplets on the windscreen. I'll just reach for my wiper button over here.

:p

If you turn your headlights on as soon as you have enough room to pass, I doubt it will be useful for you, since I could block you right away, right? Maybe you meant as soon as you start passing me, right? If you do so, there's still a chance we will both crash, reactions aren't predictable. Shocked means more than just putting that "he is passing me, even though I have muuuch better experience than him!" face, right? One bad movement and we are both screwed, right?

Engine noise doesn't disappear when you turn your headlights off. Not because Initial D says it does. The noise will be heard all the time. If you are too far for me not to hear you, you are also too far from me not to see me driving around corners, with my tailights on for you to see me driving the course (as Takumi did ). Therefore, your only chance will be to be close to me to see me drive, at which point I can and will hear you, and therefore be careful not to let you pass.

I can't believe I went this far with an argument with an Initial D fan, really. Congrats. I won't even bother to go further, because this has no end, and I know how it sounds: "he can't drag the argument further". Maybe I can't, but it's stupid to ask things based on an anime.

Can't imagine turning off the headlamp at night during a heated race to scare the 🤬 out of your opponent 👍.

Ha ha that is hilarious....imagine thinking you are on the mulsanne alone during a night race and then all of a sudden BAM!!! a drivers lights behind you turn on...hee hee hee

There are USB keyboards compatible with the PS3. If we could use a keyboard in GT5, then all the problems will be solved, ==> buttons enough on a keyboard.

Don't forget that there're cars IRL that have a rain sensor which turns on the wipers automatically when it starts to rain. Knowing that KY is a perfectionist, and if there are weather effects in GT5, rain in this case, PD will programme the cars in GT5 with a rain sensor and automatic wipers just like the real counterparts.

My idea for Headlights was to put them on the same button as your ghost. That way, it's free to use while racing, and, when you watch someone's time trial replay, you could tell when they were chasing a ghost, by when their lights were on. All this would need is a toggle between lights on/ghost on, or lights on/ghost off. Or, to incorporate high beams, you could hold the button to turn lights on and off, and tap it to toggle high beams. That way you could flash, even if your lights were off.

On my G25 I have an unused R2, X and Triangle. A menu like the RA menu would be great for car functions such as enabling the rear wing on the Audi R8 to be up all of the time, operating power hard tops (assuming the car is below a certain speed), and operating the radio. Most of which will be ignored during competitive racing.

As for wipers, the buttons I use to scroll up and down through my RA menu (select +/-) don't do anything unless the RA menu is open. So they could be used as wiper speed settings. I have that assigned to my D-Pad in the shifter of my G25, so up could be on to faster to full speed, and down, slower to off. Left and right are the RA adjustments, so they too are dead buttons until you open the RA menu. Hello turn signals.

Reverse lights, well, they should come on when you back up. That's on PD.

Triangle is the button for clutch activation. You don't use the shifter?

No, paddles. I can't get used to such a floppy gear box. My shifter is then locked to sequential, and I have assigned reverse to the push of the shifter, and e-brake to the pull of the shifter.

To add to my wipers concept, they could have it so that pushing down on the d-pad (wipers off or slower) when the wipers are already off would result in the single swipe, just like most vehicles.

Good idea!
There's so many possibilities with this! I'm so excited to see what PD makes of it. I also hope it works well (headlights and wipers... just like the Dirt 2 video) IF there's even weather (I hope so :)).

Yea, up on the d-pad would be normal speed (persistent, annoying rain). The left d-pad button could be for light rain/mist, etc. Finally the right d-pad button would be for heavy Hurricane Katrina type rain. Oh yea, and the down d-pad button would be used to turn off the wipers.

No no, to increase the speed in stages, keep pressing up. Just like the 'barrel' on a real car's intermittent wipers, keep rolling it up to increase the speed of the wipers. Then down would reduce it in stages. If it was already off, pressing down would give you one wipe. Hold it down for a spritz of washer fluid (useless over 60mph :ouch: ) and the 10 wipe cycle, followed by the delayed single clean up wipe.

Then left and right can be turn signals, which can server a purpose in racing.:dopey:

well whatever you say, you seem still don't get my point but I respect your opinion, might as well end it here since you don't get my point :sly:.
