Help me.

I'm going to Asia as you may know, and I need internet to make sure I don't fail. I'm wondering, if I get a laptop(no debates please) with a network card, will I be able to sit in a place in Asia, and connect to my school's website?

Is this possible?

No, wireless technology has only really developed to pretty much city spans.

Talk to your school network admin, they might be able to sort up some sort of login thing for you, accessed via the internet..

What? If the place has wireless, then yes, you can access you school's website. Heck, you can even go into an internet cafe and visit your school website from there. They dont call it the World Wide Web for nothing.

EDIT: Wait a sec, sUn, did you mean your school's network? Because then you need some sort of remote login (ssh/telnet) thing set up.

Most cities in asia will have tons of internet cafes. When I was in Pakistan, there was one in almost every corner. The rates are also good - it's less than a buck an hour :).

If you have to configure your laptop to connect to the school network, then you'll have to find wifi access points. These can usually be found at most coffee shops. If they don't have one, then you could always ask at the internet cafe if they'll allow you to connect via ethernet.

No, my school has a website, and the only way to access my homework will be via internet, unless I want huge phone bills for calling everyday. I believe the place I'm going to does have Internet Cafe's.

But, how do businessman/woman use laptops when there around the world? They obviously use some sort of internet way, is there anything that applies to this matter with the Toshiba Satiellite laptops, or is it just a name?

Ah yes, the business people stay in fancy hotels that offer internet access inside of the rooms. It's usually via an ethernet connection. Most of the better hotels will even offer wifi in the lobby and restaurant areas.

Also, almost every laptop on the market right now comes with wireless and ethernet built in. Just check the specs on it.

Satellite is just a name.

Any wifi card behaves the same. You could even just buy one of those USB dongle ones. It's the same as a regular ethernet cable, but it's slower.

Oh ok, so I guess the best and cheapest way is just goto the Internet Cafe and get my homework off that.

Since, me and my family plan to travel around alot, I will be in alot of areas. But the main point, I just want to know, if I bring a laptop to Asia, I can connect to the internet anywhere there, wirelessly. That's all.

Short answer: almost yes.
Long answer: anywhere there is a wireless signal. As in, probably not on a park bench or in a taxi, but most likely in a cafe or hotel lobby.

Well now that you word it that way then yeah that's easily done, what I was thinking was that you wanted a direct wireless connection to your school... :dopey:

Hi, sUn.

You probably have a few options, but everybody here seems to have it covered. Many ISPs offer a discounted rate to allow wireless access at subscribing public places like coffee shops, etc. A lot of public buildings like libraries are including it for free as well. To be honest I haven't done too much roaming with my laptop, either using dialup for a local Earthlink number or ethernet in hotels that provide it.

Asia, I'm definitely not sure about, but they are probably approaching similar if not better conditions, varying by area.

Oh bloody hell. Depending on the places you go to in Asia, you will either be:
a) smothered in technology and be connected wherever you go (ie, Hong Kong, with internet pubs littered nearly on every street [Pacific Cafe is a nice place to go to, pretty cheap. Buy a cold lemon tea for 15HKD (that's like... about 2.50 Canadian) and you get unlimited access to the computer as long there's no one behind you.])
or
b) be completely isolated from technology.

As a tip for you, if you ever go to China, make sure, and I mean, SURE you don't haul your laptop around with you unless you have a whole pack of people travelling with you.. Crime rates were quite high where I visited.
