Wireless Router

Hi guys. I get my internet through a wireless router, as my PC is upstairs and the family PC and cable modem is downstairs. The router is 54 mbps and it generally works very well at loading pages on firefox and stuff like that. However, when i am downloading a file, i experience horrificly slow download speeds (sometimes 3kbps!) even though i am on 1 meg broadband. Is there anyway i can make the speed faster? Or is this just a downside to using a router? Any help or tips would be appreciated, thanks.

well, how's your signal strength? Are you downloading from the browser or a p2p application? If it's a p2p program, set up port forwarding on the router

low signal strength will result in poor download rates. Try moving your router closer to your pc to test it. If transfers speed up, you'll know that you need a more powerful antenna

You might consider investing in an external antenna to boost the signal of the router as well as a wireless repeater to also extend the range of the router.

Our home network has a simple wireless router/wireless repeater combination that enables us to get wireless anywhere in the house even though the router is in the basement.
