Is your right shoulder more muscle-y than your left, or does he sit on either side?

He'll live to be near 90 years old. Picture a two year old that knows how to use a 300psi set of vice grips and a bull horn. $40 toy every week, and $20 of food. His last Vet bill was $200. His cage is big enough to stand up in. Take a look at www.mytoos.com or www.fosterparrots.com. Then think about how much you want one.

How tame are they? Do they ever give you a bite or two every now and then?
Very tame. Sure, I get a good pinch on a daily basis, and a good bite (broken skin) every other week. I still have all my ears, toes, fingers and such. For the most part, he's really good. He's well mannered, and does the occasional High Five for people. He's an exception though. I've seen Macaws that want nothing more than to cause you injury. The owner of teh rescue I volunteer at, brought one out of it's cage to show to people. Instead of stepping onto his hand he grabbed ahold of a finger and broke it. Then laughed.

He's big enough to step from one side to the other if I tilt my head forward. He can step about 8 inches in a stride, and about 10 from left foot to right foot sideways.

I tried out the parrot thing and found out it wasn't for me. I had an African Gray Congo for about three years. I was way to young to get a pet like that. He was adopted by a great woman who gave him the home I couldn't. Parrots are like having kids. You can't blow them off like a cat, or they self destruct. They are amazing creatures, though.

I figure I'd update with an image showing both of hte big guys. Scarlet macaw "Red" on my left shoulder, and Greenwing macaw "Neo" on my right.

Try having 8 birds that love to try to mimic it.

That's why it makes no sounds now.

Most annoying clock ever. My grandmother has one and it drives me nuts.
My mom has one, and she has a matching watch. Can you say, "Gah!!"?

BTW, as long as we're talking about birds, I'll mention something that's OT but sort of related. In a way.

I was outside feeding the quail (they get really rambunctious if I don't... 30 quail all chirping at once is just asking for a headache). So, I'm throwing the seeds out, and they're all huddled under some of the chaparral about 15 feet away from me, waiting for me to finish. Suddenly, they all bolt and scream their quaily screams, and I see a hawk right above the chaparral. It was a beautiful, and rather large red-tailed hawk.

Anyway, what amazed me most was that I was standing there, out in the open, wearing an obnoxious yellow sweater, and here this hawk is flying some 10-15 feet from me, and apparently acting like he doesn't even notice me. So he keeps flying and swooping down, but doesn't catch anything after about 20 seconds of this, so leaves.

Did I ever mention how cute hummingbirds are?

We have one on our second floor deck out back. It's so damn loud, and annoying. Sometimes it goes off, and I think it's a real bird for a sec, but then I realize it's just that ****ing clock again.

Der Alta - Beautiful birds! I've always wanted a blue one.:(

Der Alta says that only a soldering job does the trick to shut it up, but I'm betting that a well placed blast from a 12-guage next time it scares the **** outta me will render it mute. ;)

Similar issue with Australian white cockatoos - it's not unusual for them to live to be 110 years old in captivity. They also, from the ones I've seen, seem to have an appetite for learning and saying swear words.

Damn. 👍 I always thought parrots were the coolest looking birds ever, even if i was always scared of the one at the petshop when i was a kid...

How often do you need to change your t-shirt because of a...... um,....... MESS, Der Alta?

Beautiful friends you have there.

I used to have a couple of iguanas, and THEY seemed to be much more work than my dogs, so I can't imagine how much work it must be to keep up with those birds. And you'll be doing it pretty much FOREVER. As much as I'd love the rewards of having a bird like that, I don't think I'd be willing to pay the price (work).

The nice thing about hte big guys, is they can hold it for a bit longer, and they give you clear signs that it's time to move. So I rarely end up with a mess. However, when I do get nailed... Before we met, the wife had two iguanas, two Veiled chameleons, and a monitor. THat monter was something else. ou looked into it's eyes and could tell the only thought it had was "Food or not food"

Oh yes, I'll get pictures of them up at some point. We've got Two Umbrella Cockatoos as well. One of them we believe is wild caught. Which means he was once living down your way. The only word he knows begins with and "S". Rarely uses it though. We have no clue how old he is. The other one is almost 8.

And yes, that is a fish tank. That is the 5 gallon Betta tank. My morning confidant whilst preparing the monsters breakfast.
