This thread is about the 2013 World Baseball Classic. What country will prove itself as the international kings of baseball? Who will be the TRUE World Champions of baseball (unlike calling champions of a domestic sport like Major League Baseball as the "World" Champions)? Here are your fixtures for this year's WBC:

POOL A - Fukuoka:

* China
* Cuba
* Brazil

POOL B - Taichung, Taiwan:
* Korea Republic
* Netherlands/Holland
* Australia
* Chinese Taipei/Taiwan

POOL C - San Juan, Puerto Rico
* Venezuela

POOL D - Phoenix, Arizona, USA

* Mexico
* Italy
* Canada

Here's how some of the first matches of the 2013 WBC ended up:

* AUS vs. TPE: 4-1 Chinese Taipei def. Australia
* JPN vs. BRA: 5-3 Japan def. Brazil
* KOR vs. NED: 5-0 Netherlands def. Korea Republic

Is it Netherlands or Holland? Anyhow, the big stunner to me was the Netherlands blowing out Korea. I'm usually impartial to Japan as far as the Asian teams are concerned. But this is most disappointing for Korea.
 
I caught some of the Japan game this morning and although I didn't know 95% of the players it was still pretty interesting, Brazil were giving them a run for their money in the early going. Excited to see the Group D matches in Arizona next weekend, need something to tide me over till opening day
 
Italy has become surprising. They came from behind to beat Mexico 6-5, then they throttled Canada 14-4 in eight innings (there is a Mercy Rule in the WBC) at Chase Field. I wonder how far Italy can go.


Right now... it's Mexico vs. the United States. Mexico leads 4-1 in the Top of the 5th as of the time of this post.
 
This makes me wish I still had the MLB network.:(
 
A brawl broke out between Canada and Mexico earlier today. I think as many as seven players were ejected as Canada ended up winning 10-3 over Mexico.

Speaking of Mexico, they beat the United States 5-2 last night. On deck for the United States is a game against Italy. The game that is "as American as baseball and apple pie" may see the American side get ousted if they let up against Italy.
 
The brawl happened because Team Mexico didn't understand the written rules of the WBC, where run differential is the tie breaker. After the drubbing Canada took by Italy every run absolutely counts and matters for Canada's chances of advancing. Up 9-3 in the 9th, Canada's lead off hitter bunted for an easy single, upsetting Mexico's 3rd basemen Louis Cruz who made no real effort on the play. He felt it broke an 'unwritten' rule of baseball and actually told Mexico's pitcher to hit the next batter, making no effort to hide his gestures and what he said.

Absolutely shameful display by Team Mexico on an international stage. Cruz should be facing an MLB suspension in my opinion. Learn the rules of the tournament you are in and there wouldn't have been a problem. Oh, and in my opinion unwritten rules are unwritten for a reason, they are stupid.
 
The brawl even got coverage on Hockey Night in Canada. Don Cherry loved it! :lol:



For those who don't know, Don Cherry runs the show during the intermission between the 1st and 2nd period of games that CBC shows nationally. He's pretty old fashioned.
 
The USA won 6-2 over Italy last night. Maybe they were motivated after the Mexico loss.
 
Italy came quick out the gates against the Dominican. 3 straight walks to load the bases, a sac fly, and another 3 run bomb by Collabello(sp?). 4-1 bottom of 3 after Reyes just led off with a solo shot to right center. Good game so far and will be interesting to see if Italy can hold onto the lead. So far their pitching is doing a good job against D.R.'s stacked lineup.
 
These 2nd Round matches are all double elimination. The United States continually took down their opposition including a win not too long ago against Puerto Rico in Miami.

Tonight, it's Italy vs. Puerto Rico in an Elimination Game. Loser goes home.
 
Jurickson Profar, No. 1 prospect in baseball, added to Team Netherlands roster. Should be fun to watch.:)

Wow, a little late to the party. I did remember hearing "WBC" on the news or radio, I thought they had qualifying round going on or something. I can't believe it's been four years already.

I couldn't sleep last night, so I read Japanese Yahoo news online, and there it was. The article was about how the Japanese pitchers were struggling, so that sucked. Good Great news came when I got on the WBC official site and saw that the Koreans didn't make it out of the first round. :cheers: It's not a disrespect, quite the opposite. :lol:

Even without the Koreans, with struggling pitchers, I doubt we'll get very far. :ouch: Gambare Nippon!

We'll miss you, big guy..... No Darvish either. :crazy:

Team USA lost to the Dominican Republic recently (I don't have a score to report). For the World Baseball Classic semifinals, it's "win and you're in." Puerto Rico vs. USA tonight for the chance to play in the WBC semis.
 
I'm a "casual" fan, at that, so I have no idea if I should be rooting for the USA or Puerto Rico(for match-up against Japan). Good luck to both teams, I suppose!

Oh my, that is snarky. Coincidentally, they moved there just so the new stadium could fill the seats.
 
USA don't have any quality pitchers really. A lot of the teams won't let them leave spring training... And we still don't have our best players. A lot don't go.
 
THIS JUST IN...

...Puerto Rico just beat the United States 4-3 to stay alive in the tournament. Puerto Rico will play the Dominican Republic tomorrow to see who will take on the Netherlands in the 2013 WBC Semifinals.

The United States' 2013 WBC run is done.
 
USA was actually quite high in ranking I saw(#2, I believe). Too bad.

Here are your Semifinal matches from beautiful AT&T Park in beautiful San Francisco, CA, USA:

* Japan vs. Puerto Rico
* Netherlands vs. Dominican Republic

It wasn't Japan's lucky day on St. Patrick's Day night as the defending champs got 86'ed by Puerto Rico. The score was 3-1 in favor of Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico put in 9 hits and made no errors. Japan could only manage 6 hits and committed only one error. M. Santiago was the winning pitcher for Puerto Rico along with a Save by F. Cabrera. The losing pitcher for Japan was K. Maeda.


It now all comes down to the Netherlands and the *unbeaten* Dominican Republic for the honor to take on Puerto Rico for the 2013 World Baseball Classic title on Tuesday.
 
🤬 Puerto Ricans. :( I love Molina, but not today.

Japan sucked, too. If they actually played just "OK", they'd likely won that game. Japan sucks. I curse at you Ichiro & Darvish!!!!! :(

I don't know. Both teams were out by the time I learned of the tournament. :crazy:

No, which is dumb. They rationalized it as the suspensions "wouldn't have made a difference" in the results or something. Which is dumb because it allowed Canada to have a full squad against the US in their next game and the results were not final.

The 3rd baseman was Luis Cruz by the way, he plays for the Doyers. The whole fight was his fault. Way to go, Cochito. 👍
 
I think they're reasoning was suspensions meant nothing to Mexico, they were out already, but meant everything to Canada since they still had a chance to qualify so better to not suspend anyone. Makes sense in some twisted way I guess but my understanding was suspensions would also carry over to MLB games and probably should have for the players who deserved it.

As I said, it makes sense to punish the Canadian players since they had a chance of advancing.
