Would anyone be willing to critique my racing line?

All,

Many thanks in advance for viewing this thread.

I participate in a spec-racing league and consistently find myself 2-3 seconds per lap slower than the fastest guys on the track. I've been trying to improve my lap times but feel like I've plateaued, so I'm hoping some other folks would be willing to review video of my most recent event and offer suggestions on what I might do differently to improve my pace.

I've uploaded a replay file called Citroen GT Motegi.zip to my Google Drive, and included the link below. This last race was run with the Citroen GT Race Car on the Motegi Road Course for 25 laps. As you will see in the video the two fastest guys on the track were running 1:44 lap times and I could not get below 1:46....

If you're willing to help, let me know what I can do to make it easier for you.

Again, thank you in advance.

They are probably using a good wheel. I usually play with a controller and I make my own tunes which I think come out pretty well and still the guys with wheels kill my time. Even in the exact same car with same tune when I am pushing the max they will still be roughly 2sec faster. The crazy good drivers could be closer to 3-4sec faster. Not much you can do unless you get a wheel and practice like crazy. If you already have one than practice like crazy lol.

Is your racing line similar to mine in this video ? I had a stock Maserati with comfort medium and no ABS, but most of the racing line should be similar, cornering speed would be a lot slower than with GT Citreon Race car, but feel free to compare and see if following my racing/braking lines would help you gain some time.

Nice driving, i see from your vids you really like the Mazza!

I run spec races almost nightly around 10-10:30p CST. Best critique I can give is on the track in the heat of the moment. PM me if you're interested.

I'd recommend buying this book, it helped me to 'go faster' when competing in GT Academy 2010. Click on the pic & read the reviews.

👍

can you put the lap on you tube? Do you use a wheel? Also do you use TC? Turning that off will save you 2/10th's per corner in some cases.

Thanks Phil, I like the car, even though it's not very fast :) check my other vids, the Dodge Viper at Daytona Road, Countach at Rome or Lancia Stratos at Nurb GP/F ( all stock - no ABS) - the link is on my sig.

As for racing line, I suggest the OP upload a video of the lap so we can easily see how the racing lines were during the race.

Without a video, it is impossible to know where your driving can be improved. It could be down to something else, for example you might be hitting the right racing line but not getting back on the throttle early enough, or breaking too early and too much before the corner. Maybe you're doing all of the above right but need to tune the car you're driving as different setups deliver different lap times.

If you end up joining one of McClarenDesign's room one night, then I could point out where the improvements may be laying.

I use a Driving Force Pro Wheel but drive on automatic because the shifter buttons (paddles) don't work consistently. Traction control is off, I only drive with ABS 1.

I'm not able to put the lap on youtube since I don't have a video capture card.

Thanks to all for the input so far! 👍

You could record the video using camera phone like I did on the video I posted earlier, the quality won't beat capture card, but it's viewable ;) You could watch my videos right ? They were all recorded with my old Sony camera phone.

Did that really help?? I'll take a look at it...

Yes, it really did help! Once I learned how to trail brake properly, I knocked about half a second off my times on tracks like Suzuka & daytona road. In GT Academy 2010, I gained almost 1 second on Indy Road after reading & appling all the principals from this book. I'd definitely recommend the book, it's also very well written & an enjoyable read.

Yeah. It'd be great if you could get it on youtube with a camera phone or similar. It would take you like 5 minutes and it saves all of us about 15 minutes.

Second that recommendation. Great great book. I'm honestly surprised at how many people haven't heard of it.
