Would you jump out?

Oh damn that's funny. Those people live in inclimate weather every year and they're still complete idiots. I always thought that the morons that lived in Arkansas were bad.

Reminds me of when I lived in Phoenix for a few years going to school. I grew up in the midwest, so I've seen everything with the weather. Hot summers, rainy ass springs, super cold and snowy winters, everything. But, I've never seen anything like Phoenix when it rains. It only rains like 5 times a year, but holy hell, when it does, watch out. People are just like that. The don't know what to do. The drive like the streets are an ice rink. Like 30mph on the freeway, 20mph on the streets. Its funny. Just amazing how when you never drive in it, you don't know what to do.

Thats what it looks like here in Michigan right now. No one jumps out in this state. Its just too cold.
THis morning it was below zero air temperature. Accident or no accident you stay in your car.

After watching that, I wonder, why didn't anyone try and steer over the curb? If they would have gotten a wheel or two on it, it would have given them better braking.

That video seems fake because most of the cars in that video should have had ABS and it didnt look like it was working on a single one of those cars.
That guy trying to stop his car by holding the door is priceless.
"Yeah if I step out of the car into the snow I can prevent it from sliding into the other cars"
Slamming their brakes was the worst thing they could possibly do.

Hate to say it camaroboy, but ABS wouldn't do anything on ice. If you look closely, you'll see that they're all sliding on 2 ice patches.

Ive owned cars with ABS and I know how they act on ice. I still have a car with ABS. The wheels would not completely lock up like that. Have you ever driven in ice? I drive in it every day and on the way to work this morning so dont tell me I dont know about ice.

ABS is only good for steering on ice e.g. when trying to steer around an object like a pile up.

Still don't see why people were jumping out. The first women almost got killed because of it.

Good to see Previa's are decent on ice :D

The thing is, ABS only works if the car knows your moving. Lets say, you hit the brakes, and the front wheels locks, but the others are still spinning. The ABS will activate to keep the fronts spinning so you can steer. But, if all of the wheels lock up, the car thinks it has stopped moving because no wheel speed sensor is showing anything. If you look, all of those cars have both front and back wheels locked up. At that point, with the all of the brakes locked, you're just along for the ride.

I think that if you were able to get out and get in front of the car you could lay down and create enough resistance to slow down the car. But a couple of patches the size of your feet are going to do nothing.

And you'd do that as you were about to be slammed and crushed into the car infront? :irked:

If you were laying in front of the tires then you'd be below the vehicles. Basically you need something to jam under the wheels. Your body is the biggest thing you have to offer. I'm not saying that I would necessarily do that. But I think that's the only option those people had. Hanging from the door can't possibly do much.

But below the car exhaust infront? Or the kerb?

You thinking straight!?

No, they could have just sat in their cars and hoped for nothing more than a bumper damage and bust radiator. Maybe a new bonnet and front fenders but it's safest in their car.

I would have probably slammed the breaks hard - put it in reverse - cut the wheel sideways and spun the tires toward the curb hoping to jump it.

And you would have plowed into the cars in front, just like everyone else. That road looks to be straight ice. There is nothing you can do on ice once you've started the slide, especially downhill. Slamming the brakes, putting it in reverse, turning the wheel, all that would do nothing. If you don't have traction, it doesn't matter.

Never did tell you that you don't know about ice, bud. I expected you to know about it. I've owned both vehicles with and without ABS, and from my experiences ABS doesn't help at all. So what if the wheels don't lockup, when there's next to zero friction, it wouldn't matter if the wheels are spinning or not. Also, I live in Wisconsin, bud. All we get here is snow and ice, and rediculously cold weather.

Some ABS is better then others tho, for example.. the 1995 chrysler cirrus... they dont lock up, but they dont stop you.. they just let go and dont break :scared:

*shakes head* I'm ashamed that I live in the same state with these people. Check out the license plates, definatly Colorado.

I was talking to my boss about this, and couldn't believe people were jumping out of their cars. Its not like this sort of weather is uncommon! I got around fine. Everyone at my work got around fine... I'm not sure what section of Colorado these people live in, but I'm staying the hell away from 'em.

I saw that same clip on CNN. I cracked up when I saw them jump out!

My take on the whole jumping out deal - why would I? As long as I have my seatbelt on, I should be fine; the cars behind me aren't going too fast. Yeah, they'll do damage, but not as much to the car as it would to me.

They [experts] say to steer towards the snow if you begin to slide...(I know, "if you're sliding, how are you gonna steer?")...but if you can kinda drift over out of the two tire tracks (that have packed the snow into ice), you can slam on the brakes in a snow-drift-type area, and the snow will build up in front of the tires, and in turn, slow you down. I guess it's a lot to think about in the heat of the moment (or in this case, "cold of the moment" :D ), but jumping out would be the last thing I would ever think of doing.

BTW, it's snowing out right now, and I just got home a short time ago from the stores, and my mom was playing around when we got home, and she asked me "wanna see how far we can get the truck to slide?" Sure, it's not the most legal thing to do, but it is fun. :D Anyway, there was about 1/2" - 1" on the ground, and we barely slid at all. And the truck - a 1997 Tahoe, with ABS. I know, it has a lot to do with the amount of snow and ice, but these are back roads that barely anyone goes on. So there were no dry spots or tracks in the road.
Oh yeah, "drifting" it around the corner when we got to my street was pretty cool. :sly:  (not me, her. It was illegal enough as we were willing to try :D)

Wow, they're stupid, why the hell would you jump out of your car, in that situation, I mean they were only probably going 15 mph..........

I've gone down hills like that in the with the blanket of ice. There really is nothing you can do. Traction or not the weight of your car keeps it pushing. It's really hard to steer your car in any direction. If I were caught in that situation, I would have probably hit them too, if I was stupid enough to start sliding down the hill in the first place.

I have high performance SUMMER tires, so for sure I wouldn't get anywhere in that situation. ABS helps, but not in situations like that. I might have tapped my gas a little with the wheel turn to see if I could spark up a bit of a movement out of their way.

Jumping out of the cars, what a crock of ****, what is that going to do? You'll get hurt just as much hitting the ground as you would sitting in the car. :sly: 👍
