If you had to choose, a year off work with a normal paycheck in your hand every week, or... a brand new car of your choice with the same value as that years pay, but you continue working as usual.
Sounds odd I know, but that's the position I'm in.
I have a three year old Tacoma now, so the car would be just for weekend adventures and typical daily errands by the wife. (who is quite capable behind the wheel).
Figuring in the insurance and maintenance for a couple years, my choice would be the BMW135, but the real question is: Would you take the vacation or the car?

A year off work with a normal paycheck in your hand every week!

You should create a poll with these two options.

Wife would LOVE the beemer, but I would love the year off... and the 135.
See where the dilemma is?
Leaning towards the beemer.
The vacation is for one year, the 135 is forever.(ish)

You could take the year off from your current job, have a month off somewhere and then work for a different company for the remaining 11. Effectively giving yourself 2 pay checks.
Then at the end of your 'holiday' stop working for the new company and use the excess money to buy a new car.

I have the money sitting in front of me right now. $48,000 USD.
At 44 years old, it's time to poop... or get off the pot.
A year off work is a huge incentive right about now.
But, the BMW is winning at this point.
I love to drive, and I like my job, but can't drive Rt.66 and work at the same time.

The vacation. Save the money you won't be using for your daily commute for retirement (God knows you'll probably need it) or use said money to save up for a new car of less value/used.

Can you do something in the middle? Like half year off with half a car's worth of cash?

I would take the vacation. Imagine all the things that you can do, travel, learn, experience, in 1 year.

The memories and experiences from having a year to go explore and learn will be forever. The 135 will last as long as you maintain it.

Most companies have specific rules and regulations about stuff like this. Chances are he won't be able to do this, but he'll have to talk to his HR to be sure.

As what Brando said. Take the year off from your original work, and go work for another place to have 2 paychecks.

I'd say the car. Mainly because it's a physical object, whereas the year's holiday will just be gone, and that's that, but the car will be there so long as you look after it, or as long as you want it.

And are you looking at a new 135i? Because you can get an almost new one for quite a bit less, and use the money saved to take a month off, and drive Rt.66 in your new car. ;)

Cars will always be available, time away with your wife might not be.

Well, less likely to regret a year off. Could do all kinds of things! even give the dream car a run...imagine if it turned out to be a pup anyway!

I personally think it's all up to what you do. So in that case, I'll take the car and get me something nice.

Take a year off work was my advice and I think it is still what I would do but I think it's also going to be very hard to go back to work after being home - and free for a whole year.

I did just that, and you are correct. It was very hard indeed.

Think I would still take the year off though.

If possible, I would take like a month long vacation and feel as rested as possible, sleep all I want, go out to the places I normally could not, but then I'd go back to work since it can get somewhat boring not having work to do (for me at least) and then just take left overs and buy the car you want. As long as you're not overworking yourself I don't really see the need to take that much time off in a row

Questions for Eject_21

* Do you like your job?

* Are you sure you won't get fired if you stay home for one year?

* Have you ever been home every day for a long period of time?

* Do you still have kids living at home?

* Is your wife going to be at work if you stay home for one year or are the both of you going to be home, every day?

* What would you do with your free time?

Buying a car is easy, staying home for an entire year isn't.

Vacation for sure. Having time to do what you want while still getting a steady income is way more valuable then a vehicle of the same value.

I'm going with the car. The thought of being home with the wife for an entire year was the deciding factor. Don't get me wrong, I love her with all my heart, but...
I get four weeks a year off for vacation, time enough to take the road trips I've always wanted to take.
Thanks for all the replys, and a special thanks to Kikie.

Well if you only get a car as valuable as the years pay why not take the year off then use the money to buy the car yourself?

Besides, I'm only an E2, I could still study and advance to E3 by the time I go back to work. : D

And I spent over a year between High School and the Coast Guard doing almost 🤬 all as far as work. 4 hour days, 4, maybe 5 days of the week. So sitting at home :censored:ing off for a year doesn't sound too bad.

You're welcome.

So I guess the question in bold was part of your decision?

Enjoy the car!
