I want a 2004/5 STI more than anything, but I haven't found many for sale in my area at all, and when they do pop up they have close to 100k miles. And for an STI that's a lot, especially when you have no idea who was driving it all that time.

Agreed. For some reason all Subaru's have around 100k miles on them. I'd try to wait for a nice one as I've seen a few pop up in my area now that spring is coming.

Maybe you should look though Subaru or WRX forum's local classified, if you havn't yet, they will be less likely to have been ragged on or abused by owners, driven hard, but they were made for it.

Thanks for the link, I'll check it out. I'm just a little worried finding a bone stock STI there will be tough. I am probably wrong.

The worst part is that about a month ago when I was first thinking about STIs I found about 4 or 5 2007 models in my area that had less than 50k miles and looked to be in excellent shape. I just wasn't ready to pull the trigger. They all sold fast... :ouch:

Oh well, I think the front end on the 06-07 cars arent nearly as attractive anyway. You'll find the right car eventually. Don't be turned off by modifications, just ask for receipts from where they were done, there's nothing wrong with a properly modified car.

Except shorter expected lifespan.
Honestly, if have no problem shelling out few grand in case something breaks - buy out-of-warranty car. If your cash-flow is tight month-to-month - get one with manufacturer's warranty.

I'm just not willing to take the risk on a modified STI. I'll settle with stock and add my own stuff if I choose too. I feel more comfortable that way.

Tomorrow I'm going to look at a 2007 STI that just came up for sale. Crystal Grey Metallic with gray rims, relatively low miles and in great shape from what I can tell from pictures. Not my color of choice, but I'm not too picky.

And that. 👍

Grey is nice, but if this isn't THE one you want, I would just wait until the good one pops up. You can only buy one once..

Tow hitch? Hm.
Also, looks like Defi BF boost gauge & controller. Whether people put those just to have a boost gauge - d/k. Probably not. Could've gotten an SPT gauge installed new.

Chances are that tow hitch was just used for a bike rack. I didn't even notice that in the picture... good catch. I did see the boost gauge.

Ah well it's still worth a look to me.

My honest question is... How did you survive in the US (assuming not a city) without a car? :D Maybe you live in hartford.

I do work in Hartford. :dopey:

I didn't have my own car for a while, but I borrowed an extra family car until I went to spend some time in Australia where I didn't need a car. Came back recently and now I really do need a car.

How'd the drive go? Also, how far are you willing to drive for the perfect car?

25 grand for a 5 year old car with 55k on the clock...

That cost 30-35 new.

No thanks!
Considering it is $15,000ish cheaper than a no option brand new STI then I say it's a decent price. Sure 55k miles sounds like a lot but that's 5 years old. I think it is reasonable.

It isn't tomorrow yet. lol

This car is 2.5 hours away. Kinda far, but there really is nothing close at the moment.

I saw that one. New Jersey is pretty far from me too. Damn Connecticut and its lack of STIs.

Cale, I didn't end up going. Seemed too far away for me and I don't really want a gray one.

I would go for a red '08/'09 STi.. Plus, if you were at a red light in your new WRX, and the slightly older STi pulls up next to you... Mehhh..

So turns out I really like it in red and recently a 2008 pops up for sale right down the street from my house. I went to look at it, but unfortunately it is closed on Sundays so I didn't get to see the inside or test drive it. The exterior is near flawless, besides a small ding on the front bumper. For the price and the miles it's tempting.

Clicky here.

Mazdaspeed 6s would like a word.

17 grand for the same mileage range, same age, far less likely to be beaten to death.

^Pseudo-AWD though, w/o center diff. And more of a Legacy GT competitor than an STI. In the 06-vintage I'd pick Subaru simply because junk-yard parts will be a lot more readily available ;)

Sean that STi looks awesome. Hopefully you find one before you start your job. It'd make an alright first impression.

Too late, I start tomorrow. :grumpy:

It's all the same though. I'm not sure what kind of an impression a bright red Subaru with pink badges gives.

That price is insane. New sedan starts @33. For ~$22k (edmunds.com retail) it might be worthwhile.

Are the parking lots a decent size for proper winter shenanigans?

Kelly Blue Book and other 2008 STIs for sale with similar mileage are all in that price range or more.

The new sedan (2012), not including taxes, destination fee, or registration, with the options I want is going to be close to $36,2xx. And I don't like the sedan. The 5-door is $2,000 more than that even.

Figure this. Off the lot brand new 2012 STI 5-door is let's say $38,000. And then we have a used 2008 STI 5-door for around $28,000 like that red one. $10,000 extra to take the plastic off the seats? I like the idea, but that is a lot of extra cash when a slightly older model could be just as good.

It's pretty large. And I've seen quite a few other Subarus in the lot. Could be a good time. :sly:

KBB is on crack. 4yr old/50k miles generally results in ~50% depreciation (off pre-tax price paid). STIs usually hold value a little better. Say, 60% is reasonable. That's 21-22k.

Now, recently there has been a shortage of used cars of the 09-11 vintage, due to low sales volume during those years. MY08 did benefit a bit too. But that's
a) subsiding
b) probably means there will be more depreciation then usual further down the road, when cars of this vintage blend into the rest (when down the road there are plenty of used '12 STIs with normal depreciation).

So if you want to be the one to bite the most of depreciation - you're always welcome to do it, but there are more fun ways to burn money.

Basically, the cost of ownership for a new STI is unlikely to be more than just a few bucks a month higher, if you buy that 4y/o car at close to that price.

Looks nice! One thing..
