Sorry to post a new thread flat-out but a PM just didn't feel right for this one.

First off, Flat-Out, you are currently an active Wiki contributor and it seems fitting that you would estabish the WRS envolvement with the Wiki.

So when the time comes, Flat-Out should be the one to start this (don't go new-page-happy on me just yet racers). ;)

Now the subject at hand...

What can the WRS bring to the Wiki?

Let the ideas flow. 💡

I'll get things started by saying that each week should be recorded in the wiki with a few comments on the car, setup (parts), and any advanced technique that was discussed throughout the week.

Think of this as a chance to bring the "OLR School" to the Wiki in the most active OLR-breeding pool of the GTP. :p

Almost like "what the WRS has taught us" with weekly installments by any contributor but with the editing of all racers from that week.

Honor will have to be with all of us to agree about the Wiki contributions, but overall I have faith that everyone can work together.

Links to the replays of each weeks winner can also be contributed. 👍

So...
What do you all think?

Also...
Flat-out, please get back to all of us in this thread when you can.

Finally...
Remember racers, don't go off to the Wiki starting up an Official WRS page. :trouble:

(but feel free to get started with the wiki using "My Talk" as well as any of the other great features of the wiki)

Oh, and how could I forget...
"My Racing" is an idea I just had the other day.

Take a post from your past, edit that post to serve as a history of your laps in the WRS. 👍

Also post any other racing you want!
Organize it however you wish!
Plus, use the VB system to get great leaderboards.

Then, link that post in your sig as my racing!

Or, better yet, do a wiki page about your racing, link your leaderboard in your wiki page, and regularly update on your current GT4 efforts.

Go on now, get started with your Wiki work as well as your ideas about greater WRS contributions.

Sorry. You'll have to excuse my ignorance ... but WTF is 'the Wiki'

The wiki is a great thing (I've been implementing a wiki on one of my personal websites recently), mainly because of 2 aspects :
  • very user-friendly : any reader can be a writer too
  • very flexible : a page can link to several other related pages

But it needs to be structured first before scores of people pop in to add things, and it needs to be strongly moderated since anybody can add, modify or delete anything.
As Kent suggests, we should first gather here how when could use the WRS in the Wiki, and then I'll create a few pages in the wiki that we can use as a backbone for our project.

I'm with flat-out all the way and I know he is capable of setting us on the right track.

My initial thoughts of how the wrs can contribute to the wiki is this...

Remember that G/S/B system we had going?

Maybe we could take each week's results (starting whenever) and establish G/S/B, then post the 3 times in a page with the exact specs of the challenge?

Could be a fun way to create a "GTP OLR License."

We could even link the wiki page with all that info to a special event thread in the opening area of the "official GTP competitions" forum.

Just an idea.

So, wahdaya think? :dopey:

That's a good idea, Kent 👍
It would be cool to have our own licenses :D

As far as my idea goes, here it is:

I have been wanting to do a page with all the WRS replays that have been submitted for every Weekly Race Series done in GT4. I just do not have the web design knowledge nor a webspace to do it.

I think the Wiki would be a good opportunity for us to do this.

So, have a Replay page, for each WRS starting from Week 1 in GT4, maybe sorted by Week, where each week links to its own page, and then sorted by time. It would also be useful if it was well organized with all the information needed: Time - Racer - NTSC/PAL - Controller Type, and so forth.

I think it would be really cool to have something like this, so if somebody wants to check out a replay from a particular week, he/she doesn't have to go into the Archives and find the replays within 5 or 6 pages of posts.

Just my two cents.

The Wizard.

Dude, Wiz, you're the man. 👍

Tie the ideas together and you've got a WRS wiki.

Literally, do a main WRS wiki page.
Then 1 page for every week.
Then on each week's page have the race specs (a picture if we could do so much), the actual replay file, and if possible, an mpeg replay (which Jordan could probably work into the videos section of the larger gtp site).

I really think that alone could do it, but if we were to present each week with the "G/S/B" system's 3 times and then provide the winner's lap as an example of a gold run!!! 👍 👍

:dopey:

Now, remember everybody... No jumping the gun here. ;)

That would be a good idea, also. It would look a lot cleaner if we put both our ideas together.

So, in the same page (for one particular week), we could have all the replays sorted by time, and at the very top have the G/S/B times that somebody would need to beat in order to achieve that medal in that particular license :D

That way we do not have to do two different pages, but we can have all the information for one particular week in its own page.

I really hope we can make this project start 👍

EDIT: Maybe we could also color code all the replays, for that given week, so that we can easily see who managed to obtain what medal for that particular week. I think, though, that the G/S/B times would have to be worked out independently of Divisions, though. Else, we will end up with three different Gold, Silver and Bronze times.

The Wizard.

Indeed. 👍
Color code without divisions since this would be a good place to do the "gsb" in a true form and not a hybrid designed for use with the WRS.

My primary thought is to present each week of the WRS as the challenge/specs, GSB times, Gold Lap Replay (various forms), any additional replays that can be provided.

The thing is, those are my priorities in order.

While I do like the idea of hosting all race replays, I think it would increase the size of the project exponentially.

If we were lucky enough to get a W-License started, there is a possibility (hopefully) that Jordan would work with us to host the winner/gold lap example Mpeg (if one could be made).

Doig the same for all of the replays could be too much. :(

However, hosting the actual .max or .sps file may be easy since we could simply link to the Forum post that originally contained the attachment. 👍

So just to recap the idea (in my eyes)...

WRS Wiki
-> Welcome page with "mission statement" and W-License concept presentation.
--> Each week's page

Each Week's Page Should include:
Race Specs (with link)
Race Results (Displayed by GSB)
GSB Cutoff Times
Gold Lap Example (using hosted mpeg replay or link to original post & attachment).
Additional volunteer replays

How does that sit with you all?

Btw, I just realized that presenting the license idea in this fashion could actually lead to a secondary "wrs license test series."

That seems pretty good 👍

Granted, doing the video for each replay posted would take humongous amounts of work and webspace. So, making the video only for the Top Time seems the most reasonable and logical idea.

So when do we start? :D ;)

The Wizard.

After the mods seriously talk about it. 👍

I'm working on it though, so will flat-out I am sure (since he is much more well versed on Wiki workings). :p

Be patient and all will work out.
(not that anything in the above is already in stone... just in the air for now) :sly:

Ok, I thought a little bit about how the WRS could fit in the Wiki and I started with something.

First an index page here
This index page links to the week's page like here.
The page shows the wonderful pic I'm taking to illustrate each week :D , then the race specifications (with hopefully links to the car page and the track page), then a link to the replays that I'm uploading on my own website and finally links to the main thread, to the result thread and to Luxy's leaderboard.
Only pages 45, 46 and 47 are done, and only page 46 links to the replays so far.

This requires a huge amount of time to keep up-to-date, but if you like the concept I'll update it.
I know many will like to help, and the great thing with the wiki is that they can actually help. If you already have an experience with wikis, just go on. If not I suggest you take a close look at sites like www.wikipedia.org before you start.
In any case when you create a new page, you need to :
1) pay attention to the page name (respect the structure I've defined)
2) edit an existing page to copy its information
3) paste the information into your new page and edit what needs to be edited (thread numbers, week number, week title...)
4) if you don't know what you're doing, just don't do it.

Catch you later,

--Cyril

Edit :
You'll need to register to be able to create/modify something in the Wiki.
I suggest you use the same name you are using on GTP forums.

And then I think we should edit the 'Replays' section of the pages to replace the driver names by a link to their user page. If you know the wiki syntax, that means replacing flat-out by [[User:flat-out|flat-out]].
If you don't know the wiki syntax, the above sentence must mean nothing to you.
