**Update** Febuary 16
The problem has finally been solved more or less. Here's what I did in retaliation to the yelling I recieved because msn was "acting up".
1) Copy all of my personal files to the 160 gig hard drive
2) pull the 160 gig drive out
3) convert the drive to external
4) heighten security on the desktop
5) say the following words to my sister who yelled at me some more today "I've got my stuff backed up. If you mess it up again, I really don't care. The only time I plan on using this again is to either listen to music, burn a dvd, or if I'm ready to build my next computer and am looking to salvage the parts that I bought with my own cash"
6) get called an **** **** by my sister
7) go into a screaming fight with my parents (they're defending her of course)
8) get yelled at some more
9) sit back and wait to get yelled at some more while contemplating whether or not to mac address ban the desktop from my router for a few hours
10) sit on my laptop realizing that the usb ports on it are defective :irked:

The moral of the story? Don't **** with me after I've spent 12 hours in downtown and 8 hours on a computer at work with a major RSI injury on my left hand.
[/update]

I normally am one of the first people to be able to answer most computer questions, but this one has even ME stumped.

My sister pretty much stole my computer from me. I don't get to use it anymore because she claims it's for homework. She forces my parents to make me let her use it. I normally would have just given her the PC but the problem is that I only have $1000 canadian to spare and that much money is nowhere near enough for a new PC, monitor, and a decent desk for my room.

Here's what happened.

I log onto my computer yesterday, the mouse wasn't working. I thought the battery was dead but it was perfectly ok. Then I tried re-syncing with the base station but that didn't help. The keyboard worked fine so I tried going into the control alt delete menu and found out that my sister's account was logged in. I log her off, everything is ok.

I run Foobar, I find that EVERYTHING is gone. None of my settings are the way I had them, and the program was effed up in general.

I run firefox. It crashes everytime I go to any flash or shockwave based site now. Nothing of the sort happened a week ago when I last used this pc. In addition, my user profile has been wiped somehow or other.

I run MSN and it crashes at random times

IE for some reason is back at it's defaults

Fearing the worst, I scan for viruses and spyware and all the usual crap. The system is totally clean.

A few of my games - corrupted
Outlook - can't find several DLL's

I run Access Manager (the program I use to limit my sister's access to just about anything I want to limit access to) and I find everything is more or less the same as I had it.

What the bloody hell did the little prick do?!?!?!?!!?? I know it's not a lot of info to help you with, but she refuses to tell me any of what the hell she does to my computer. As retaliation, I've pulled my 160 gig drive out of there to protect my music collection and I'm seriously contemplating completely disallowing access to MSN on thic machine.

Is there anything I can use to monitor her usage? MSN keeps it's usual logs but that's unimportant. Access Manager has logs of what windows she has open but it's not really useful since it doesn't say if she's downloading anything or whatever.

Also, how do I completely disallow IE's ability to surf the internet? She's constantly downloading crap onto it and it's constantly getting screwed up. The worst part is that she figured out that it's possible to use IE by either exploring her my documents folder or by clicking on links through MSN.

Maybe she infected your computer with that new MSN worm that everybody's been talking about.

That's why MS released a patch for MSN 6.2 yesterday.

Do what I do, I have my own Administrator account setup on this computer, and only I use it, everybody else uses the "Other People" account on the computer which has limited priveledges, you can't change anything in the C: Folder, can't remove or install programs, it's the best thing to do.

I've got a much tighter setup than that.

I'm admin, everyone else is in as regular user or as a guest account. Then I go in and limit access to any advanced features on the pc. No registry access, no access to any of my own apps, no access to my 160 gig drive, etc. Somehow she always gets around it :irked:

This isn't the first time she's effed it up this bad.

What do you have for a Virus scanner these days, bud? I knew you used to AVG it, but they've been having security issues recently... so I switched to Avast!. Also, I find that having Microsoft's Anti-Spyware running quite helpful.

*I doubt that you don't know about these, it's just good to go through a checklist with said errors*

Anywho. If you are completely scanned and have no relevant issues with viral/malware/spyware activity, than I'd say your drivers are blown... maybe even your BIOS. I say this in regards to your mouse inactivity problem. Other than that, you might just simply have a bad .dll in your system32 file which would cause this security problem.

The mouse error hasn't happened since that day so I'm guessing it just decided to go fubar on me.

The antivirus I have is Norton AV Corporate 8.1. It's got the best scanning engine I've seen to date - even the corporate thing my school has on their servers to scan my laptop without my knowledge sucks in comparison. It's always up to date and I've got it set to scan weekly

Anyways, it doesn't matter any more. I've pulled my 160 gigger so my music is safe :)... all I gotta do is bring my speakers up to my room and somehow make space for them

why dont you just show your parents what your sister has done, so that your parents can open a can of whoopass and only allow her to use library or school computers.

tell them that she doesn't have enough responsibility to respect and care for the family computer. that, or you can just lock all the log in accounts with some crazy passwords.

They have completely taken her side on the whole issue. In fact, she gets them to yell at me if I do anything that may interfere with her usage of my computer in any way.

I may just pull out the parts I had to buy after we bought the PC. The PSU is mine, the heat sink is mine, the gpu's heat sink is mine, the dvd burner, usb card and the firewire card - all bought with my own money because the originals either failed or were close to failing. The PC would have either melted or exploded long ago if it wasn't for the amount of time I had to put into taking care of it.

Take the sucker apart... hide the parts in a special box somwehere, maybe at a friend's house. They will tell you to put em back but just tell em you don't have them... you don't (if you put it at a friends house) so you aren't lying. :D

Just take it apart, screw the accounts over and let her be happy with it.

:scared: I hope she wasn't randomly going around pressing the delete key and not knowing what was going on... I've heard of that.

Ooh ooh!

💡

What if you screwed up the registry one night after she got on and when you try to do something and nothing worked you blamed it on her?

Or intentionally put the blaster worm on your computer and blamed it on her?

your a moron and anyone that would do that (I'm assuming you did  ) is sad

No I didn't do it, and I wouldn't ever put the blaster worm on my computer intentionally. It was just a humorous idea.

I don't like Norton at all. Too many resources, too many bandwidth hogs, and just plain useless when it comes to stopping hardcore virus' on the spot. First of all, you probably know, that Symantec installs more than just the virus scanner. It has 2 rather useless registry additions that just love to take system resources for their blatant pointless-ness. I'm telling ya', bud, get Avast! and have only 4 useful registry additions: Email coverage, Update Coverage, Web Coverage, and the Display Module.

I'm tellin ya bud, the NAV corporate scanner is bloody amazing. I personally think that their home products suck donkey butt. However, their corporate scanner is completely different from the home edition. Even the live scan engine with corporate takes next to no resources and it finds just about every virus that gets tossed it's way.

You guys have any progreams to monitor the usage of my computer? For example tells you everything someones doing from whitch folders where opend to sites they've gone to.

I know i can manually do this but still, i don't wanna spend all that time.

Hey emad at least you got to save your most important stuff. I lost all my web design projects and all my school work etc. and that kind of stuff.

Well, I'm glad you got the lesser of 2 evils, but I knew that you had NAVcorp from a different post. Even though NAVcorp is nice, I've actually seen it miss virus' when fully updated. Just my opinion, but that shouldn't happen.

eMad said one already, Access Manager.

You should just reinstall the windows registry files by hand and reboot all the windows and windows 32 files. That might save you from a format it will just take a piss long of a time and you will need to have to access codes to reboot some of that stuff.

Why dont you just run the recovery disks? Did you make recovery disks when you got the computer? It will restore everything to brand new just like no one was ever on it. You probably already know this but its a last resort that always works.

I never had a dvd burner when I got the rig. Hell, it didn't even have a cd burner for that matter. Reformatting just takes too bloody long since reconfiguring everything the way I like takes weeks of my time

My sister has an IT GCSE and the number 1 teaching (at least from what I can tell from her) is scream if there is an error message. Must have saved my computer half a dozen times.

have you tried system restore if using xp, i know it sucks ass but its worth a shot.

also NAV corp is a brill prog, im running v 9 and have been using 7 for ages and no virus's since. no system resorce hogs, only nvsvc32.exe running and it only uses 348k of memory.

I have enough headaches with my sisters using the PC also.... they mess everything, and I have to put it back to place. And no matter how hard you tell them not to do this or that, they are always screwing something up. And now my younger brother is starting to use the PC too. :ouch:

I'd go with taking the parts out. It's a solid solution cause then she can't use it unless she buys all the stuff that's missing (or your parents buy it for her). It just sounds like your parents and her have big rods up their @$$es. Pull your sis aside and tell her it's mostly your computer to begin with, what's happening, and that she needs to stop whatever she's doing and just do school stuff on it cause you had it set up the way you wanted it and now it's F'd up. That's all she's supposed to be doing anyway. Oh and get some encrypters and locking tools that can lock access to itself and programs you specify. Heck, if all she needs it for is basic stuff, just find a way to get a cheap computer put together. An 800 mhz should be plenty for what she needs and then she won't bother yours. You can put a pretty damn decent computer together for less than 400 bucks. BTW, how old is she cause if she's younger than high school then there's no hope of convincing her to do otherwise. Young teens and pre-teens are more stubborn than a mule. I should know. I live with one.

Also, how much do THEY personally know about computers? Are they alien to your parents or do they know a thing or two about them? That makes a difference, because if they don't know jack about them, they're more likely to hand over some cash for stuff. I found that out when I was working on building my computer.

Heck, if worse come to worse, just back up all your stuff on to that 160 gig of yours and stick it somewhere safe for when you get your comp back. Then give her a spare HD and she can have free reign on it and you won't have to worry about your stuff getting screwed up. Hope I helped even a little.

My mom touched my computer and it turned off. She just touched it. It was the most hilarious thing that's ever happened. Luckily I've never had anything as serious a problem that you're dealing with...but still. I'd recommend getting one of those computers with a panel over the "ON" button that you can open and close, they come with a lock...:sly:

I've tought my sister not to even use Hotmail without me watching over her.
