Right, I bought the domain name jondot.net a couple of years ago through Yahoo's domain name services. I paid something like $8.99 at the time, which was a fairly good price.

But the other day (on the 25th of June, to be precise) they sent me this:

Dear *********,
Thanks for using Yahoo! Domains. We're writing to remind you that it's time for the annual autorenewal of your service.
Your Domains plan, associated with the domain jondot.net, will renew on 06/28/2009. If your billing information is up-to-date, there's no need to do a thing (except keep enjoying your service).
Important note: Beginning on July 1, 2008, Yahoo!'s annual domain renewal price increases to $34.95 per year.
You can verify your billing information by visiting https://billing.yahoo.com/ and clicking the Update link next to your plan. Click the gray Edit button to the right of your payment method to review your payment details.
(Please note that the billing center will not reflect the new $34.95 domain-renewal price until July 1. Until that time, you will continue to see the old renewal price next to your plan.)
Have questions? Please visit our help center or contact us anytime.
Best regards,

The Yahoo! Small Business team

Right, so I saw that it'd be renewed on the 28th and decided that, shockingly, I didn't fancy paying $35 for a domain I wasn't using anymore. So I went on their website and cancelled it on the 25th - the same day they sent me the renewal notice.

About 10 minutes after I cancelled it, I got this lovely email:

CANCELLATION CONFIRMED

Take a look at the expiration date - 13th of July 2010.

What?! So basically, Yahoo have gone ahead and renewed my domain regardless of the fact that I've specifically asked them to cancel it. That sound about right?

What's annoying is that, ironically, I now actually want to renew the domain with someone else and Yahoo have got it all to themselves! At least they can't bill me (as the debit card they have associated with my account expired about 6 months ago), but I'm rather annoyed that I can't renew it elsewhere until they wake up and realise I've escaped.

Am I missing something here, or does this sound a bit odd to anyone else?

It says cancel date. Perhaps the expiration date is just for what it would've been. Try calling Yahoo! and see what they say, or just have your credit card company refuse payment.

Well thankfully it can't go through anyway as the card they're charging it to expired about 6 months ago, but I'm slightly worried about how long they'll hold my domain hostage for.
