Pah, the concept looks better than those mules, which, I guess, is to be expected. Still, those arent' flattering shots of the shape: and, no matter what, in my mind, it's still an Eagle knock-off.

Wouldn't you all at least agree that this looks like a big car than a traditional SUV? Would you at least give BMW some love for coming up with a crossover SUV that really IS a crossover, ot at least has some characteristics of a crossover? My like of this machine is from an artistic perspective. They can maybe make it longer in the rear to give more volume room as well as extra room for seating. People come up with all kinds of acronyms for all kinds of cars. SUV. SUT. SAV. LUV. This is more of an SAC- Sports Activity Coupe. Despite the coupe namesake, this is a four-door coupe (basically). The ony real giveaway of any sort of SUV traits is its jacked-up suspension. If anything, this is more of a standard car with a jacked-up suspension. It has running boards to climb into the machine. Usually, I'm the one at fault saying that something looks horrid while many other people say it has character and should be better respected. Style is my emphasis with cars. So speaking as an art person, it is an absolutely unique and even unusual design. It's an SUV, but it doesn't look, or probably performs like an SUV. I probably wouldn't be scared to test its handling limits since this looks more like a car than a top-heavy SUV. If I can suggest anything towards its design, I'd probably suggest to get rid of the small horizontal grill under the traditional BMW kidney grill. You don't want to make this look as horrid as the latest Honda CR-V now, do you? Since it looks more like a car than an SUV, I'd probably recommend a taller rear windshield so rear view isn't excessively compromised.

Could this catch on? Well according to leftlanenews.com, Mercedes-Benz and even Land Rover somewhat hinted something towards a design like this for future "sport activity coupes." Can you imagine either one of these companies (or let's say Dodge or Toyota) comes up with something like this? Maybe other car companies will make their own models in this style. Probably better, though. So in addition to the earlier question, do you think other car companies could adopt a concept like this X6? And out of 100%, what are the chances this X6 actually ends up being a successful car?

I agree, the front shots look good. But I'm undecided untill we get some finalised shots of the rear and side profile...

Wel, let's see...We can't use the Eagle as a litmus test, since AMC was going down the drain already upon introduction, (Thanks, Renault,) but I still think it's too wierd to have a suv/car. Those others you mentioned will definitely be watching the X6's Success, letting BMW blaze the trail into this brave new category. On that point, you've gotta give BMW credit. Risk takers get rewarded.

You know, if it does end up looking as good as that Concept (though the thinly disguised cars say no) It might actually do...acceptably. we'll see what happens.

and I hereby dub this class of automobile, the "Eagle."

Except if you add a "K"....

I mean, would you really want to drive a "Suck?"

No offense meant, It's just the first thing that came to mind when I saw that acronym...

Hey... I found this YouTube video about the new X6. Follow this link:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4t3mlzzfTKo

It is an interview with Chris Bangle on the design of this X6. The American designing cars for this classic German marque talks about what the X6 provides and who it is tailored for. Adds a little extra perspective on this weird crossover.

It's still going, but probably at a much slower pace, after seeing the relative flop of the MB R-Class. Also BMW's main competitor would be a Mazda over here.

Why does it look like there's barely any room for the driver's legs?

this car will have the new TT 4.4 V8

http://www.leftlanenews.com/bmw-x6.html

Just three months after the official debut of the X6 Concept, BMW has revealed the production version of the X6 coupe-crossover, which it calls a "Sport Activity Coupe." Along with the wild exterior comes an all-new twin-turbo V8 that will find its way into other new BMWs next year.

BMW is the first automaker to bring such an SUV to market, although other automakers are said to be planning similar coupe-like utility vehicles. Land Rover, for example, recently unveiled its LRX coupe-crossover concept.

Compared with the concept, very little has changed. In fact, you'll have a hard time noticing any differences at all. The only obvious design tweak was made to the crossover's side windows. On the concept, the B- and C-pillars are not visible, but on the production car they clearly divide up the glass.

Even the X6's complex front fender design made it to production. Each front quarter panel surrounds the entire headlamp, creating a very seamless appearance. The X6's aggressive front fascia is also carried over from the concept, with its large air intakes and stylish fog lamps.

Daring design

As the photos show, the X6 is anything but a conservative design.

The X6's roofline begins arching downward after the B-pillar and continues plunging right to the X6's rising waistline. As a result, second-row headroom and rear cargo volume are both compromised.

The new X6 will be longer and lower than the new X5, seating only four. But what the sporty X6 loses in seating and storage, it is expected gain in performance.

Compared to the X5, the X6 has almost an inch of additional wheelbase length, and two inches of added width. The overall height of the X6 is a whopping 3.3 inches lower than that of the X5.

All-new twin-turbocharged V8

The range-topping X6 xDrive50i is propelled by an all-new twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 unit producing 407 horsepower at 5500 rpm and 446 pound-feet of torque between 1750 rpm and 4500 rpm. The sprint to 62 mph takes just 5.4 seconds and fuel economy is estimated at around 19 mpg (U.S. gallons).

The engine is designed as a replacement to the company's current 4.8-liter naturally-aspirated V8. It is expected to filter into other models like the 5-Series, 6-Series and 7-Series in the near future.

The engine seems to represent the second stage in a shift at BMW from high-displacement naturally-aspirated motors to slightly smaller turbocharged powerplants. BMW's twin-turbo 3.0-liter engine that powers the 335i and 135i has been met with overwhelmingly positive reviews, and it appears BMW is hoping for similar results with its new V8.

The X6's other engine is also a twin-turbo setup. The xDrive35i will come with the aforementioned 3.0-liter inline-six from the 335i, producing 306 horsepower.

A diesel model will be offered in Europe, but it is unlike to come to America.

X6 to be BMW's first hybrid?

BMW has comitted to delivering an X6 hybrid, but official details have not yet been released. Visually the hybrid is identical to the regular X6 but BMW claims that the model is 20 percent more fuel-efficient.

Various reports indicate the X6 will be BMW's first production car offered with the option of a hybrid powertrain.

From the front, it doesn't look to bad. The side profile isn't hideous, but it isn't good-looking. The rear? Its like meeting a really hot chick only to find out shes got one of those concave "Dutch" butts... Not good at all.

And why, oh why, are they ditching the 4.8L V8? Its a wonderful piece of machinery, and I see absolutely no reason to change it... Progress is indeed progress, but when it is already so good, well, see my arguement for the small-block Chevy.

Sales flop?

Its going to be EPIC!

The new engine sounds like a good idea to me, the turbos didn't ruin the 3.0L any, I'd assume this is a similar approach. Infact, the idea of this engine in a 5-series (with a proper stick, if possible) makes for a pretty cool M5 alternative. It'd probably be a wash in real-world situations, with that torque advantage.

It still does look odd. If it had the regular X5 hatch style, but just shrunken to fit the more slammed proportions, I wouldn't mind. This just doesn't work.

Shield my eyes? I wear glasses. Do they count as shields? ^_^ Just pulling your leg, mate.

Actually, it doesn't look THAT bad. Think about the Porsche Cayenne. It was marketed as pure Porsche... in a different form. I look at this as pure BMW... in a different form. This is a crossover SUV in common speak, but more like a crossover "sports activity coupe." My storyline for this machine is going to be if other car companies will share this sort of idea if the BMW X6 ends up being a hit on the auto market. This is a big car that really is a big car. I love the Mazda CX-7 and CX-9, but as much as they are marketed to be car-like crossover vehicles, this is a real car-like crossover. I think it's different in design as well as a daring one. Sometimes you gamble on 4th Down and try to go for a touchdown. Whether or not BMW will be dancing in the end zone with a touchdown depends on how well this machine goes.

My overall respect for this machine lies in the fact that this is essentially a big car. I don't even see a trailer hitch of some sort. No running boards (if you want to call them that). Essentially, it's an SUV for people who don't like SUV's. I'm saying this because it is essentially an SUV with the jacked-up suspension coupled with the BMW's character lines as well as its nice design. I don't hate this machine to be honest. In fact, I'd love to see what this would be like on the inside if this machine makes it to next month's Houston Auto Show. It just seems like the marriage of SUV and car without too much compromise for either side. BMW's taken a risk like this. A lot of people don't like it, but I'm giving this machine some credit for what it is. I'll just need to learn about its handling characteristics and such to know what people will be paying for when people head into BMW showrooms for this.

But once again, it's something different for me. I think it's an interesting concept. We'll see how well this thing does in about 3-5 years. Unless... this thing will be sacked like when the Mercury Marauder was reintroduced a few years ago. Do some of you at least give this machine credit for its design and how different it is?

I have a feeling this is one of those vehicles that look ugly in photos but will have amazing road presences when seen in real life

I agree with you, Bubble Bunny. I see this more as a big car than a crossover SUV, or SAC, or whatever the hell category it belongs. Damn acronyms!

Since some of you are making references to the AMC Eagle... tell me more about this AMC Eagle. I did find this Wikipedia entry on the AMC Eagle: < http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMC_Eagle >. In what ways are the AMC Eagle and this BMW X6 similar in respects?

They're both tall cars with off-road ability. that's enough for me. In fact, the AMC was offered as a hatchback, just like the X6, though arguably, It looked better. Probably because Bangle never worked for AMC. Oh, and it had three doors, not five.

The only other thing I can think of is "Chic Utes" like the Nissan Murano, but even that doesn't look carlike.
