how wondering if the 299 verison well old xboxs games

Ok.

I took that to mean...

"Hi. I was wondering if the $299.00 version of the Xbox 360 (the core version) will play old Xbox games."

Am I right? That was a wild guess.
Well, if that's what you said (or attempted to say), then this excerpt from PlayFeed. Especially read the second paragraph.

"One of the rumors floating around is that backwards compatibility will only work with a hard drive, which would have left Core systems out in the cold. As it turns out, that’s only partially true. In many cases, the hard drive will indeed be necessary because you’ll need an Xbox emulator file to sit on the hard drive (it’s still unconfirmed whether this emulator comes pre-shipped on 360 hard drives but it is highly likely the case) and make your Xbox games 360-friendly. However, our understanding is that this isn’t perfectly foolproof, and that it may not work in every single case.
What’s especially interesting, though, is that select premium Xbox titles in the present and future are getting special treatment. We’ve learned that Microsoft is inviting some developers to make their current Xbox titles backwards compatible for both 360 SKUs—that the games themselves will contain the Xbox 360 emulation code on them. In fact, certain Xbox titles already contain the code to boot up under emulation on the Xbox 360. Teams from Microsoft are helping developers with the project"

I doubt that the core system will be compatible with very many games if any. If MS was smart they would have built the emulator into the hardware, but this will work for them as a marketing ploy to sell more HDD's to people who buy the core system, as well as market XBL.

Think of it, you spend 299, then they say if you buy such and such you can play your old games too! Sure, it's stupid, but stupid people will give in.

Just imagine...if there is a shortage of 360's, and some people end up buying the core system because they can't wait...they'll be stuck spending tons of money.

Is this an important feature for many people? Because I never played my PSOne games again after I got the PS2. I actually did once when I ran out of new PS2 games to play, but the difference in graphics and frames per second was so huge I gave up.

Well, I took a look at my collection the other day, and realized with a bit of a shock that I own more PS1 games than I do PS2 games. And yes, I play them regularly. In fact, about a week ago, I needed a Need for Speed fix, so I went and bought NFS3 for PS1.

Just because you have a new system doesn't mean you simply stop playing your old games. There are quite a few "old" PS1/2 games I play on a regular basis.. that's not going to change just because I have a new box in the house.

Like it or not, that's a big advantage for PS3, especially in marketing. They'll be able to truthfully advertise that you'll be able to play all PS1 and PS2 games on PS3, with nothing else to buy.

Sorry, FatAss and code, but you're wrong! :D While most people own or have owned PS2 before, there are a lot of us who has never owned Xbox. If I was considering a purchase of X360, backward compatibility with Xbox games would be huge! Even more so than the PS3's backward compatibility with PS1 & 2, because you already own PS1 and/or PS2, or you can get your hands on them easily. It would be nice for customers who are new to Xbox games to buy X360 system, and play some of the good games they missed out on the original Xbox console. Those classics would be cheap also, new or used. :)

That's a good point, a6m5. I actually was eyeballing the 360 at one point. But, since I don't own an Xbox, backwards compatibility was a big deal. And the more I hear about how it either A) Won't work, or B) I'll have to pay out the ass to get it... sorry, but the 360 just isn't as tempting as it once was. And that's going to cost them, in the form of users like me who never owned an Xbox, but who were eyeballing a 360 in order to play ALL the games.

Jedi...Just remember, there's always another side to the coin.

Just remember this is a Gran Turismo site.

Call me crazy, but I think it's safe to say there's alot more Ps2's among us than there are x box...
Just a little hunch.

Now considering i'm fairly loyal to microsofts console(very loyal, i'll admit it).
and since every game for the PS3 that i'm semi-interested in is coming out for 360 aswell I'm not going to bother getting a Ps3.

Anyway...I wont get either at launch..
screw that....

i don't trust either company enough to buy another launch console....

Drifster i think its way too early to judge the games for PS3 since no real games have even been seen. Just realtime game engine demos(stunning by the way). The system is still more than half a year off.

I don't know why but I was under the impression that the 360 came with "Xbox Live", at least a "Silver" subscription. But according to "CVG" you still have to pay..

Furthermore, Microsoft's Xbox Live service is no longer limited to single one-year subscriptions. The company will be offering a variety of packs at various costs - alongside the 12-month Value Pack, users can also fork out for a 3-month Value Pack (the Value Pack seemingly comes with a headset and "additional features", presumably for the benefit of Core buyers). There's also the option to pick up phone-style top-up cards, available in one month, three month or one year varieties.

That's annoying. If it's not too much then okay, I guess, but I don't like paying to play a game online when it has cost me £40/£50 already, with the exception of games like FFXI.

And about backwards compatability I read this from "CVG" too...
Whether the emulator is a one-file-fits-all solution however, or if a new file is required for each original Xbox game, is still unclear - as is Microsoft's intended method of distributing the software. Although downloading the emulator via Xbox Live is the obvious solution, rumours are persisting that Microsoft may ship the Xbox emulation software pre-installed on hard drives.
Err.. Ao not only do you need the HDD you may also need to be subscribed to Xbox Live?

Contend downlaods are free if the content is free to begin with. Xbox 360's come with a silver membership and a 30 day gold trial. No problem being subscribed since silver is free.

Then Bill Gates lied....kinda. It would seem that to play online enabled games you must have the Gold membership. Link Link 2
Well, looks like I won't be playing online then!

If that is all true according to the 2 links above regarding the Live services then I find it totally pointless for the Silver membership to be offered. Wow, I can make a gamertag and not play anybody with my games I bought. What's next Microsoft.

I dissagree, if you want to use a messenger program you have to register, if you want to use gamepsy's free online game service you have to register. Silver gives you many options to do with your internet connection, you just hav to register, plus online play is free on weeks ends(sux for cheap adults) who will have to deal with the 13 year old sailors.

Multiplayer should be free, maybe make downloading the extra content and some special stuff with a price tag attached. Glad I own a PC ;) Hell thanks to my PC I'll probably be able to play 360 online all week if I wanted to anyway.

There's no info in those links that says Silver membership lets you play multiplayer online games at the weekend. Maybe someone can find a quote where it does say that?

The 2 packs are useless, you cant play your original xbox games without the hard drive, you would want the hard drive to save games and music too, you would want the wirelsss controller because thats a main feature, why would people (except women buying it for someone) buy the base pack, its ddumb.

Not all Xbox games will work on the Xbox 360 with a HDD, only the best knowen ones or the most wanted ones mate.
