Why don't you just save your money... Get a computer....And have a better Console right there, with multiplayer...The ability to emulate all the games...And you won't have to worry about kids calling you a "fan boy".......Dude, these consoles are going to be rediculously overpriced...I doubt they'll even be worth it for a good year or 2

You are aware, of course, that building a PC to the specifications of either of these consoles will cost at least three times what the console itself costs. And you call that "rediculously overpriced"? Whatever.

Well think of it this way.... if these consoles are supposed to have these processors that you know...cost 800 dollars alone..and they will have 3-4 of them.. aswell as top end graphics card...all within a safe neat case...that won't cost a pretty penny? And last time I checked... You don't need the same hardware to get the same results......

I mean...pong doesn't look any better on a 900000 dollar supercomputer than it does on a 200 dollar dell

No the processors don't cost that much, remeber were talking about mass production here, the PS3 will cost $600 maximum. And yes, you will have to sped far, far more than that to get a PC to match a PS3's performance.

Wait if the ps3 is going to be under $700 does that mean they would jack up the prices for the games and controllers and peripheral?????!!!!!

no. all companies take a hit with their hardware. it's more than made up for by the software, though.

peripheral technology is not costly. not nearly as expensive as the console internals, anyway. Expect them to be about the same price, if not slightly more expensive due to their wireless functionality.

I believe it, ATi makes some great products.
But I'm happy either way, these consoles seem to both be great. I can wait to get my hands on both of them. Obviously, they'll both have some "must-have" titles. 👍

Nice post cobragt! :)
Yet, I bet there will be a $100 difference between the two. :grumpy:

Liv....I'll FAR more making a PC that doesn't "meet" the performance, it will outclass it in every catagory.. No to mention it will always have room for improvement, not to mention that it's possibilities for applications are endless....

Now a Ps3...will cost 600+ dollars.

Will play DVD's music, and PS3 games..600 dollars for that sounds like twice tha bad investment as a PSP....

Wow, you guys think it will cost that much? Thats ridiculous..
... I already have a PC, a DVD player, a CD player and am part of several gaming communites online including this and applications like steam.. 600 isnt worth a "video game player." (Lets cut the ****-- dvd,cd,harddrive, etc if its going to cost me extra hundreds of dollars)I might consider if it it had tivo and a HDTV reciever/tuner with recording in HD capabilities, but thats not happening any time soon.

Thats not saving money. Also Console games get better with time on the same hardware, its the opposite for PC games. New games need new hardware, Doom3 + best GFX card=$560 alone. So buying the best card every six months($500+) is better than a console that gets better with time? If u have unlimited funds yeah, but these are your opinions and not everyone can have the best PC. You'd need the best every few months to keep up with the new consoles' 1920x1080 60fps games.

About the PSP, you are crazy :). I love this device and i love playing NES and Genisis on it on top of the cool games it has and has coming out. When a faster Emu for snes comes out how much of a bad investment will it be then? A PSP can do more than the PS2 and Xbox combined un modified.

It wont be $600 that would be suicide for Sony.

Sony have said it will be less than $600 but they didn't hint to how much less, expect it to cost more than th XB360, we are talking some pretty good and futureproof technology here.

I'm thinking between $300-350. I seriously doubt they'll price it more than $50 higher than XB360.

Remember the last few generations:

When PS1 was announced, they said it couldn't possibly be under $500. Launched at $299.

When PS2 was announced, they said it couldn't possibly be under $500. Launched at $299.

When PS3 was announced, they said it couldn't possibly be under $500. Launched at $???.

You see a pattern here? 'Cause I do.

I dont think this will be $300 If it were a pure gaming rig then I'd say yeah $300 is a safe bet. but it has so much stuff in $300 would be a steal.

Nvidia's 7800 GTX s going for $600 new and the RSX is going to be better? Will a 7800 GTX cost as much as a PS3 a year from now? I dout a 6800 Ultra will be under $300 next spring.

I'd expect it to come out at £400 and around $500 in the US.

Dude....I never even heard of the 500 dollar PS2 BS....

Let alone the Ps1 BS.

I think if SONY says it'll be under 600..It'll be 599.99

And when did the 7800 hit the market? The Nvidia site is still advertizing "Be the first to distribute"... There's no way it's out of the 6800's would be so DAMN exPEnsive\

---edit....n/m....Goddamn Nvidia and their constant improvements.....

Its listed as in stock on many online shopping sites. Whats even more retarded is the 6800 Ultra is still going for $500+ even though a 7800 GTX has about 1.8x the power it. 7800 out does an sli rig in many games. The kicker? a 6800 Ultra 512mb listed in Best Buy is $999. But the $600 GTX is still faster.

The cost of the 7800 is irrelivant because it will not be produced on a scale as large as the PS3, therefore it will cost more.

Don't expect it to be 500 bucks. Honestly it'll probably look more like this:

Xbox360: $349.99
PS3: $399.99

That's my take on it anyway, but it is possible that they both sell at $299.99.

When a normal retail outlet (ie, newegg) buys parts, they buy in the thousands. Sony and Microsoft however, are not normal retail outlets. They're more than likely going to have contracts towards the purchase of millions of components over a period of time. They're also most likely only going to be recieving the chips themselves so that they can assemble the entire unit in house. After all, they won't need the entire video card with pcboard, power connectors, fans, ram, etc for the console. Just the GPU. Much less fabrication involved that way on the supplier's part and it means lower costs to manufacture. Low mfg cost combined with continually improving assembly line techniques as well as guaranteed a minimum of 6 figure sales (in number of units, not dollars) over the first week of release are enough to justify a cheaper console.

its nearly impossible to make money on consoles sold. nintendo did it this gen, the other 2 werent close. everytime sony or m$ sells a console (weathe rits an xbox360 or a ps2) they are taking a hit. there is a reason why they have both been allocating so many resources and pushing their 1st party development teams so much, because thats the only place where they will make $$.(altho if blue-ray were to take off obviously sony would easily making back what they lost in their consoles with blu-ray players).

thats why nintendo turns th ebiggest profit of the big 3, they dont lose $ everytime they sell one of their consoles.

SCE makes more profit than Nintendo, if you have a source that says otherwise provide it by all means, but although I agree that the consoles are sold at a loss, the profit Sony makes in the number of games it sells far outweighs the difference.

Very true, thats why sony under shipsi guess.

Well after watching a dozen video's for games in the making for the next gen consoles...I've noticed a couple of things.

PS3 games for some reason is still just a solid piece.
EX. the cobble stone street in the FFVII demo....

Gears of War has textured cobbelstone though....

And it doesn't look like Killzone's engine has any sort of on demand "facial muscles" because the mouth movements were a completely different language to the dialog..And if they wern't that was just horrible design..

Kill zone 2 really looks they took the piece crap Killzone was and turtle waxed it...
Sony's been having that problem alot lately..

I think he only means in reference to hardware, because only recently did nintendo begin selling the GC at a loss, even when it launched they were actually making a profit on hardware.

This generation is actually going to be HEAVILY reliant on games for both Sony and MS. If their consoles end up being a large hit, and their games aren't successful, it could mean one of them could be out of the race, as it's projected each company take nearly $100 loss PER CONSOLE.

Keep in mind these numbers are larger than the $50 losses seen last generation.

Meaning if PS3 follows the success of the PS2 during launch, they could suffer nearly a 1.2billion dollar loss, and the figures are quite similar for microsoft.

Speculation currently is that PS3 will cost nearly 495 dollars per unit to manufacture, and will retail at 399.99, while the Xbox360 will cost nearly 400 to manufacture, but will retail at 299.99, so while one console will indeed be cheaper to manufacture, they will still take similar losses, and rely heavily on software.

This could verywell be the generation we see someone fail.

But rest assured, it won't be nintendo if they do indeed stay out of the technology race, which could put them right back into the running game very easily.
