Earlier today XBL was down for some users.

Xbox Live users are unable to access the online-gaming service, Microsoft has confirmed.

The software company has taken to both its Twitter account and its Service Status page to inform users that Xbox Live is experiencing "difficulties." The Xbox Live Status page specifically says that users are currently unable to sign in to Xbox Live from their Xbox 360 or via Xbox.com.

"We are aware of the problem and are working to resolve the issue," Microsoft wrote on the Status page. "We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience."

Of course it has it's problems, what online network system of that size doesn't? They're few and far between though, and usually fixed very quickly. The only length downtime I ever recall was over one Holiday period and even that was 'only' a week.
 
Well it is a US company, so the government just spends money to microsoft for their work to get it going, Unlike sony who is not a US company.

Dunno whether I'm understanding this right. Are you saying that the US government is paying money to companies such as Microsoft so they can fix stuff like that?
 
Most likely, Since if xbox gets hacked its reported within seconds unlike sony, who spends like a week or so until they figured it out.

Duh. The reason the US pays Microsoft to get it back up and running is because XBOX is a secret military weapon... I mean obviously...
 
It wasn't even really "down" was it? Just a subset of users were having issues logging in. I was able to get online just fine throughout the whole ordeal, but I wasn't trying to get on much before 1030am PST so maybe it was actually down before that...

Either way, its all good now! No 3 week wait for service to be resumed (thank god) so its pretty much done and dusted. Nice work by Microsoft to resolve whatever the issue was so quickly.

Microsoft beefs up Xbox Live security

Garden's official Xbox Blog:

-We've increased notifications to members whose accounts may be compromised to add proofs, update their passwords, and, if necessary, contact Xbox support. This helps our team lock down an account quickly, investigate and restore the account to the rightful owner.

-We've taken legal action to pull down online posts of gamertags, usernames and passwords gathered from malware or phishing schemes to help protect our members.

-Our Xbox Live Spring update included many behind the scenes improvements that help us build on security enhancements for the near future.

-We're sending unique codes to the security phone numbers and secondary email addresses provided by members to verify authorization for Xbox.com purchases or account change attempts not stemming from a member's trusted device.

-We're working to reduce market incentives for criminal activity. Engaging in identity theft, trading in stolen accounts and committing credit card fraud are illegal and violate our Terms of Use. Those involved in these activities risk criminal prosecution, account and console bans. That goes for both sellers and buyers of known stolen accounts and content.

Special note from Garden:

"I encourage everyone to take five minutes today to check your security information and update it if necessary. If you have any lost or stolen security proofs, update them now to prevent any interruptions to your Xbox Live service in the future. We only use this information for your security, and never for marketing or advertising."
