This article is not written by me and i take no credit for it.

Original article can be found here: http://itvibe.com/default.aspx?NewsID=1155

Now this is not posted to start a flame war or anything like that. But i hear all these ppl who have never used or never used Live to the fullest to make negative remarks about Xbox Live, mainly at the fact that you have to pay for it. And we should all know that EA games are Live enabled also.

I have tried both, and i have both Live and PS2 Online, and even though I have to pay for Live, it's worth it. I can get online and play with my friends, as opposed to playing against a bunch of random players. That right there is probably the biggest reason why Live is greater then PS2. It takes the excitement to another level. Live>PS2

XBOX LIVE IS NOT FOR EVERYONE! IF YOU HAVE TRIED IT AND PLAYED IT FOR A BIT THEN PLEASE POST AS TO WHY YOU LIKE IT/DON'T LIKE. IF YOU HAVE NEVER TRIED LIVE, SHUT THE **** UP, YOU'VE NEVER TRIED IT THEREFORE WHATEVER YOU SAY MEANS DICK. I AM NOT A XBOX FANBOY NOR A PS2 FANBOY, I OWN BOTH THERFORE I LIKE BOTH AND AM NOT BIASED TOWARD EITHER SYSTEM.

The Sega Saturn could do it, the Dreamcast had a decent crack at it, but the vision of fast and easy console online gaming had not been fully realised until this current generation of high-powered gaming platforms.

While Nintendo seem very reluctant to move with the times, constantly promoting their 'simple is best' attitude to the games industry, both Microsoft and Sony have been driving their online services as one of the main selling points of their machines. Microsoft with XBOX Live and Sony with their PS2 Network, both companies have pumped millions of Dollars into their respective services, each hoping to outdo the other's user base.

At the time this article was written, Sony has reported a 0.5 million-subscriber lead over XBOX Live, but this isn't of any relevance. What does matter is that both services are massively successful, and both boast a wide range of different online enabled titles. But which is the better? Or rather, which is better for you? Let's take a look.

First of all, cost, a big deciding factor for some people when choosing a console to go online with. For both services you'll of course need a high-speed Broadband connection, with an ISP (internet service provider) that supports whichever service you choose. On top of this you'll need to pick up the gear to get your machine online. PS2 Network is a one off payment of buying a network adapter, (around £25) which you then simply fit onto the back of your PS2, pop in the network access disk and if everything goes smoothly in the connection setup process, you'll be online in a flash.

However, with XBOX Live, it's a bit more expensive. You'll need to purchase a starter kit for around £40, which contains a headset, headset connection, three online demos and a 12-month free subscription to the service. Yet it's far easier to get going, simply input your credit card details and it detects all your connection settings automatically, no fuss at all.

Which brings me to the matter of XBOX Live's monthly fee, which can be paid monthly or annually (with the latter being £39.99 and the cheapest option overall). Now you may think this is a rip-off considering PS2 Network is just a one-off payment of buying the network adapter, but the XBOX Live service offers so much more in terms of features, let me explain.

Once Live is enabled on your XBOX, whenever you start it up without loading a game you're taken to the XBOX Live Dashboard. It's on this dashboard that you can view and edit your buddylist, check out the latest Live news or use the voice chat. The buddylist feature is nothing short of amazing. From the dashboard or in any Live-enabled game, you can view your buddylist and see who's online and even what they're playing or doing. You can then send them invites to the game you're currently in, or choose to join the game they're playing (at this point the disk tray opens for you to insert your own copy of the required title, same goes for when you accept an invite).

When you're playing a PS2 game online, that's all you can do. You choose a server and join. It's up to the individual game to provide features such as buddylists, lobbies and voice chat. Even then it only counts for the one game. You can access a website called Central Station through your PS2 with the network access disk however, which contains a mountain of gaming media, yet it runs horribly slowly and is subject to crashing frequently for many users.

XBOX Live also holds a much larger online library of games than it's Network rival. With massively popular Live-enabled games such as Rainbow Six 3, Counter-Strike, Project Gotham Racing 2 and Top Spin, the XBOX more than delivers quality titles to go with a quality service. That's not to say the PS2 service doesn't have some gems of its own though. Socom 2 has a much larger user base than any XBOX Live game ever had to date, and PS2 Network can also boast Everquest Online Adventures, a brilliant conversion of the most popular MMORPG of all time.

Overall, it's pretty obvious that XBOX Live is the better service with the widest selection of online games to choose from, and so is the best choice for most gamers. But if you want to play EA Games online, or love the unique style of Socom, then PS2 Network is going to be for you. One last point to make is that PS2 Network is better for younger gamers, as it doesn't require a credit card, unlike XBOX Live.

IMO....Dreamcast still has/had the best online availible.....You didn't need broadband to use it...You could run every online enabled game via 56k...2k2, 2k1, PSO etc.....Great console....oh well....I personall think Xbox live is the better online because i've had very very few problems with it......When I first subscriped to PSOnline in Thatcher Arizona....I started my account....And killed my internet connection completely with the college from that particular outlet...I tried it in 2 of the 4 in the room, and they had to manually send a tech guy in to fix it.......I don't know what went wrong...But playing Auto Modellista Online isn't worth THAT much of a hastle......there's my 2 cents.

i have both systems online, and X-BOX LIVE is by far the best for online gameplay, the reason it is so much beter is the fact that MS runs & controlls the online network, with PS2 you have to log into different servers for each game, X-BOX LIVE runs so much smoother because its one big online server, thats why they charge for online with X-BOX.

by the way ive always been a die-hard PS2 fan, and just got X-BOX online about 6 months ago, and im tottally impressed by the X-BOX network.

also for those out there complaining about paying to play online (im not saying anybody is ) the way i look at it is this, we pay between $19.99 - $49.99 a game, and if you think about how much we spend a year on games, for the price of one "top of the line game" you can play for an entire year on X-BOX LIVE !!!

so lets say last month you bought 10 games that cost $49.99, you could have subscribed to X-BOX live for 10 YEARS !!!! 👍

Obviously, Xbox Live is the better system. But, with games like SOCOM (and GT4), PS2 is the most popular. Just like the "Console Wars", the best doesn't always win.

Just for Live's ease of use and the fact you can see friends online to play against makes it a better choice. I think that the way Live's interface (dashboard) works is a big plus as well.

My 2 pennies...

Dreamcast ROCKED.

still rocks actually. Let's all give up on this console war and play some sega. :)

Guess you've never played Rainbow Six 3 on Live.

Also PGR2 was quite popular.

And yes the DC rocked. I used to keep on signing up for 1 free month of sega net over and over and played NFL2K1 and WSB2K1 all the time.

no he's acutully right. Socom 2 apparently has more users than the entire xbox live gaming library. This is obviously due to the widespread userbase of the ps2.

i own a ps2 and i will get the onine adapter sooner or later. And i have not tried xbox live or online. But what about gamecube, I've always had a fondness for nintendo. Multiplayer(not online) has always felt funner on a N64 than a ps2. I wish nintendo would have an option of going online. I know it would be a major rick for the company, but i would love playing mario party online.

unfortunately, gamecube has the most weaksauce attempt at online ever. They don't seem to think it's of any importance, therefore do not make any online capable titles. Technically, you can play Mariokart DD (I thought the game was rubbish), or any other System link (umm... not many) capable game online through a non-official program called warp pipe (similar to xbconnect on xbox).

Nintendo has a broadband and narrowband adapter for the gamecube, but they are virtually useless. Unless you own Phantasy star online.

Nintendo is stubborn.

i have PS2 but never try to connect it online, since I am in Hong Kong, I can't find any place that sell PS2 network adapter in HK (by the way i am using 18000 PS2, so i need the old style adapter as well), why i bring this up, i want to prepare myself for GT4 online.

while, i have XBOX for a week or so and playing PGR2 Live now, it is so great, connection is fast and stable

^....So you have a version 1 ps2 as well!.....I have the SCPH 100000 which I bought in HK.....you can't buy the old PC Card adapter with external HDD in Hong Kong, although I show had one for a really high price! I don't want to buy one anyway becuse it will be in Japaniese which I wont understand....it probably won't work in the uk and also......it probably won't work with online UK games (its chipped)! So I won't be online for a while!

Also I have to say that Xbox live is probably the better online.....I hope Sony sorts it out properly for the PS3!

exactly. i found some PC Card with HDD from ebay, but they asked for a very high price, it's like i will be better off to buy a new PS2 with Broadband unit if i want to play PS2 online.
but in the mean time, i rather wait and see

The friends list is probably the best thing about xbox live. Being able to see whos online, what game their playing, how long they've been playing and at the push of a button you can connect to play with them. Even if you're not playing the same game at the time, it just asks you to switch cds and then puts you into their game. The voice enabled chatroom is great if you and your buddies wanna figure out what game to play without having to boot into a real game first just to use voice. Online scoreboards are amazing for me, adds another level of competition especially in PGR2 because you can race a ghost of the top 10 scores. Feedback is great although I haven't seen any proof that it actually works, but I dont doubt it at all. Feels good to report the real idiots you encounter every once in a while. Also, the friends list works in games that arent even multiplayer so no matter what your playing you can always pause to quickly check whos online or receive an invite. Only thing I dont like is having to use the live cards with a new account instead of being able to add to my current one. But thats not really a fault on the xbox, just that I'm cheap and I dont like it when I dont get to be cheap.

Well as far as PSO goes...The whole PSHD issue seems extremely gay..How the boot up time is doubled because the HD HAS to spin up...and how some PS2's don't read blue disks well but the HD boot disk is blue.....it just has ALOT of holes in the design sony could have ironed out

PSO = RIPOFF

pokemon with some more collectibles and slightly less gay monsters.

my ignorant opinion anyway.

well i would buy xbox live if i was rich but i aint rich ive got to pay for broadband xtra which costs 50 bucks im not paying anymore for a "friends list" or stuff like that i just want a simple online mode that makes games funer than playing against bots with ps2 online but with flaws oh well

Well I have both too, and although I like having just one account for all games and you can see what your friends are doing, other than that the Live service has little over the PS2 system. I played SSX3 online for instance on the PS2, and that has a whole MSN Messenger built in, which works great for finding, keeping and chatting with friends.

XBOX Live hasn't solved the problem that PD is trying to solve for GT Online yet either. I have never been able to play with anyone outside of Europe yet. The Online scoreboards of PGR2 are great, but have nothing to do with Live per se, it's just a good feature that many other games offer as well.

PS2 has many many more games that support online than the Xbox, because MS puts big restrictions on what companies can do with online, requires total control and will see everything. Look at EA's deal with MS and the reasons why it took so long before EA got online on Xbox to see what I mean precisely, and find out why for instance Tony Hawk Underground isn't online to see what I mean.

In the end, yes I like the way Xbox Live works on the user side, but all in all I have so far not concluded its really worth the extra cash you have to pay for it, and I don't really like the way Xbox Live works on the publisher side.

I play against fellow canadians, americans, europeans, and the occasional japanese people on live.

And MS doesn't restrict or lord over developers and their online components. They just plug it into a unified structure that works just fine. Many developers are actually glad that they don't have to worry about their own server infrastructure, and can concentrate development on other more important things.

EA, on the other hand, runs a crappy online service and is big enough company, in terms of software sales, to browbeat Microsoft to run it their way. NFSU sucks online, LOTR the return of the king is decent, but simple 2 player co-op, 007 everything or nothing (or whatever it's called) is a joke, and the only games that are worthy of praise are the madden and NHL games, which I don't play.

Most PS2 games with online capabilities are extremely limited (many are simply head-to-head throw-aways) except for the big dogs like SOCOM, ATV offroad fury and TOCA 2.

Bottom line is: Sony needs to get it's act together.

I have had PS2 since it came out and I have played PS2 forever online but just recenty got x-box live and it is such a better set up online. I am 100% happy with x-box live. The nicest thing about it is you keep the same name tag for every single X-box game online. Makes it so much easier for friends to locate you whenever they play other games online. It actually tells them what game you are playing and if you are on or not. Then you can invite them to join you in a different game. And when I say diff game I mean if your on a golf game and they are on a race game you can still invite them. 👍 👍

Glad you saw the light and recognize the real advantage of having a paid subscription based service versus free and poorly managed PS2 Online service.

No such thing as free lunch..

XBL> life

The friends list rocks. My friends would be playing all manner of games and I could still invite them to play some PGR2 with our little circle of XBL friends. Loads of fun, whether they are playing RB6 or whatever, I just have to invite them to get em on. Also if you use MSN Messenger it's great because when I'm up here on the computer I can see if a friend logs in then run downstairs and boot up the Xbox to join them in their game. Great fun!

Also when your userbase is something like twice as big, beating Xbox by half a million users ain't that amazing.

BTW: HAAAAAALLLLLLLOOOOOOOO 2222222222

I was surprised the other day when I was playing the single player and I was getting invites online. Now that was really cool. :)

yeah, that's live-aware, it's now featured in games that don't even have online play, so you can still see what your friends are doing.

Im surprised no one mentioned the X-box dashboard (I think thats what its called)
This is where even if you or your friend dont have a game in the x-box you can still communicate with each other. I think you might even be able to chat with the headset even if you dont have game but im not positive.
