A few weeks ago my computer began running as slow as sin for up to ten minutes after initial bootup and again at random points through the day.

The problem is wuauclt.exe (Windows Update client) keeps spiking to about 60M of mem usage, and if the process is sitting at a nice 2K, the svchost process containing wuauserv spikes instead (I checked this using Sysinternals' Process Explorer). Sometimes I can end the wuauclt process via Task Manager, and the process will reboot but immediately continue where it left off (ie at 30+ MB mem usage); other times I can't end the process at all. (wuauserv-containing svchost spiked to 76MB just now)

This makes my computer lag like hell (128MB RAM, PF set to 256+MB).

How do I fix this problem, without having to resort to switching auto updates off? AU was set to check for updates every day, so I changed that to every Sunday at 9am sometime last week, but nothing happened (wuauclt spiked to 33M at the time of writing of that sentence).

Any help? (wuauclt spiked to 38MB now)

edit:
XP Home, SP3
Usual PF usage with IE6 running is ~180MB, it was at 320 a minute or so ago because of AU. This problem also causes physical memory available to drop to well under 6MB... saw 2MB RAM available the other day :(
